Hmm, nice. I will look up that paper and maybe give it a try. Been very windy around my parts lately. Would be nice to make another kit. Thanks for checking out my video and if you make a kite with the paper - take some pics and I will post em on my site :)
You know your kites :) I kept this kite making project as simple as possible although a bridle would be a good idea. As far as the bow goes isn't that the horizontal bar?
Dude lemme tell ya, we had to make a kite for our class. I'm a sophomore so I have no idea why. Anyway, I had no idea how to make a kite. Then I watched your vid and so far so good. I'll get back to you with my grade ;)
Hi! Thanks for watching my video. I am not sure about the cotton fabric. How thick is it? I think it has to be real thin and light. almost sheer but I am not sure. Partly it depends on how much wind is available to you! I say give it a try and see how it goes. It would be a beautiful kite! And you could paint on it! Or dye it.
Hi! Cloths and felt are out of the question. Just too heavy. You can glue paper to the kiite and it will be fine. but glue is tough to stick to plastic bags, You might try cellophane taping the paper to the bag. The best thing would be to use a large sheet of thin paper and use that to make the kite! Even seen the large sheets of brown packing paper that comes inside shipped boxes? That stuff is perfect. Light and durable.
Take a stick and tie on 6 long strings equal distance from each other. buy 300 paper or plastic cone shaped cups or make 300 cones out of computer paper. Tape 50 cones end to end on each string. On the bottom of each cone, opposite the string, slip on a paper clip for weight. In the middle of the stick tie your kite string. It will be both unusual and it WILL fly. I won a competition at the Detroit Science Center with this kite. Fred Miles, Physics Major at M.I.T., and NASA during Apollo.
No, I don't think I ever actually took this kite out to fly. But, it is a standard kite making design thats been tested and proven many times. You should be good when making this kite.
can i ask you a question? i am doing a kite or geometry and i was wondering if i can use any plastic bag...and in the beginning you said to cut the end of the wood?
i was thinking of using very light weight, thin cotton fabric. and then fold over the edges and sew the fabric instead of taping it like with the bag. do you think very thin cotton fabric would be too heavy as well?
I am not exactly sure what you mean. Do you mean how the crosspiece shoud be bowed like a bow and arrow? I think mine bows a little bit but not a whole lot. It flies great though.
The you tie a string at the bottom to the top on the side opposite the sticks. Make that string loose enough that holding it about where the two sticks come together you have around six inches between the kite and your fingers, You will tie your kite string there. I used to always tie a string from one end of the short stick to the other end to make it more bowed. It will bow itself his way, but will be harder to launch. Do not run. Just keep jerk pulling the string. About 25' you will catch air
Thanks a lot for all the explanations , you are so enthusiastic, and patient while showing step by step the way to do it!! Keep on doing videos and on being creative!! it helped me! =)
Awesome instruction and hints! Thanks! I'm doing a kid's kite workshop next month and will be using white plastic trash bags that they will decorate with permanent markers. About how long should the kite string be? Not sure if I can just buy pre-made "kite string" on spools or if I have to make them. Any hints about this? Thanks!
@voodoobny i think you misunderstood what i said it's my fault as well i didn't make it clearer sorry anyway, what i meant to say was you can put a little bit of music then move to your narration then back to music so it takes some boredom away and gives you this live astonishing video.
did you fly this kite already and test it out? because im doing a project for school on how to build a kite, and this looks like a good kite, however, ive built a few all ready and none have been able to stay high in the sky, even when theres enough wind.
Actually Ben is quite right if you want a stable flying kite! you Need to bow that cross piece 3" deep in the center on the back side with a piece of string. Make a loop knot and hook it in the notch on one side and tie it off on the other side so string to center stick is 3" deep in the middle. and then attach a 3 foot long piece of string that hooks to the long stick 10" up from the bottom and 5" down from the top thru the paper in the front of the kite and tied off on the long stick at these points. and this string should have about 12" of slack from the center stick of the kite then tie your string to this string about where the cross in the middle of the kite is. Then your kite with some tail attached (old t-shirt strips) will fly nice and stable and fly as high as possible. Don't EVER fly near power lines either!!!!
i used to make kite when i was little. But the best method and cheapest is to use newspapers, bamboo sticks, a bit of tape, a bit of glue, and some fishing strings. and by the way, i think its better if the horizontal stick is a bit longer with a bit bending to it.
sir btw instead of plastic to wrap on kite, is it ok to use paper to wrap it on kite like the one you did on the video? i'm just wondering b'coz i've I've seen others make that thing,..
I am missing quite a few details here for example: Where do I attach the strings to? in what angle should the strings be placed so that the kite fly straight and does not swoble and swivle left and right? To what corners should I attach the strings? Thanks.
I have a light nylon ripstop fabric- do you believe I can apply your techniques diplayed on this video with my fabric (but sewing instead of taping)? Thanks!
The side that faces the wind should be the good side (the other side on your kite), not the skeleton side because then the wind blows, the skeleton protects the plastic, not letting the plastic flies away.
You forgot adding dihedral. Just tie a piece of string with a loop on each end and tlooping it to the cross spar to bow the spar a little. This will add stability to the kite and make it much more fun. The hole in the middle gag isn't much good. Add a bridle to the front, tied to the crossed wood and the bottom of the kite. Set a loop for the angle and you're done and it will be a stable flying kite. So many times, people forget the basic things that make a kite fly well.... Good vid, though.
I glued the cross pieces and held them in a vice before attempting tie them together. I actually left the whole thing in the vice while I tied and strung it.
where do u exactly tie the string to fly the kite? i put mine in the middle & the kite just fell...i added cloth and tied them in a kot but they fell off what do i do/
Hi, where do you suggest you tie the tails on for best results? How long do you suggest the string to be for the initial test? thanks for posting this video!! Those of us who are visual really appreciate it!!
Back in the motherland,i used to make kites of different shape, with china paper and light/strong fishing line. The shina paper is not exacly a paper but is more like film paper.Light and strong. And used to fly them in the beach,Used to go as high as the closest clouds.

You are very welcome, this is a really nice kite project. Lot of fun and prettyy easy to make.
This kite worked out great
👍
Thanks! Making the kite is almost as much fun as flying it :)
Hmm, nice. I will look up that paper and maybe give it a try. Been very windy around my parts lately. Would be nice to make another kit. Thanks for checking out my video and if you make a kite with the paper - take some pics and I will post em on my site :)
Are you perhaps still doing UA-cam?
@Brilliance728 You are very welcome. Have fun with your kite making. It is kite season now!
Crazy. I found ur Chanel as a 12 yr old kid full of wonder. I’m 19 now, life sucks dicc but watching these brings me back 😂thnx big dawg ✌️
Welcome back! Don't lose that sense of wonder!
@enriqueisthebest no, I don't think tissue paper will work. I think it will tear in the wind. You have to judge this by the exact paper.
This kite actually flies quite well :)
Thanks alot epicfantasy, this Kite is for my Science Project and it looks great!
You know your kites :) I kept this kite making project as simple as possible although a bridle would be a good idea. As far as the bow goes isn't that the horizontal bar?
HOBBY LOBBY FOR ALL YOU KITE MAKING NEEDS!!!.
The bridle is very important... and missing from the video. Oh, and we need to see it fly too!
Dude lemme tell ya, we had to make a kite for our class. I'm a sophomore so I have no idea why. Anyway, I had no idea how to make a kite. Then I watched your vid and so far so good. I'll get back to you with my grade ;)
Awesome kite 😎
Tie the tail at the very bottom. Lots of string. Use a whole spool.
Thanks! I do have a video on how to make a box kite. Check my playlists :) I am defintely doing more kite vids. Spring has arrived where I live.

@microkosrae I think you can use any plastic at all. As long as it is big enough. I am not sure what you mean by cut the end of the wood.
@JUSTINTRIPjl right hand is long nails. thats the hand that plucks the strings. I trimmed them, all short nails now :)
@mickey199397 Fabric is possibly too heavy. depends. Plastic or newspaper better becaues it is light. Unless you have really really light fabric.
Excellent suggestion. Thanks!
You did not show the most important part, where to attach the bridle?
Thank you so much epicfantasy, this really did help out a great deal!
is the kite string attached at the intersection of the cross pieces? it was off camera at the end when you said to attach it right here. 6:44

@jaikahpretty921 Yes, you can make a very nice kite like this that really flies!
@MultiLulul right in the middle is good. Retie the knot !
You tie it at the cross where the two sticks meet.
Wow my child is doing it very well now

@ICOD73 any hardware store or home improvement store. Or crafts stores like Michaels or AC Moore

@zuwyzzxkr21 Yes, it is quite ok to use paper. But, it will be heaviier and more prone to tearing. Plastic is better but paper will work. good luck!
@voodoobny i think you misunderstood what i said it's my fault as well i didn't make it clearer sorry anyway, what i meant to say was you can put a little bit of music then move to your narration then back to music so it takes some boredom away and gives you this live astonishing video.
Thanks for sending me this information

You can also use "tracing paper" or "china paper" . never flew a kite in the rain, never thought of using plastic.
Gift wrapping paper too.

The ones we made always had a piece of string to bend the cross piece like a bow.

Great video. Right learning speed. Still don't know where to tie the main string for flying it was off video. I put it two inches below the cross.
wheww thank you
saved me this is my project!
and i had no idea how to build it...
thanks alot!
plus i love kites!
@jammingm8plegirl This is a great idea. Sure, you could add designs to it. Just be careful of adding weight to it.
I made this kite at my house and it was soooo fun

Can-I use tissue instead of plastic?
Where do I attach the string that I will hold? In the middle?
Nice video, by the way.
Great teaching, thanks!
You've done it again, Will. Thanks!
Well done very good, thank you.
I'll use this type of kite in my camp for kids thank you for your time :) and keep it up !
Ahh 240p, we meet again!
@epicfantasy can i use fabric to? Or is it just plastic and newspaper?
I am missing quite a few details here for example:
Where do I attach the strings to?
in what angle should the strings be placed so that the kite fly straight and does not swoble and swivle left and right?
To what corners should I attach the strings?
Thanks.
ok esta muy bueno y bien fasil. gracias
Tie it where the dowels form the x. And use a tail to balance it.
Thank you. I could not remember all the steps. It has been a few decades! :-)
I have a light nylon ripstop fabric- do you believe I can apply your techniques diplayed on this video with my fabric (but sewing instead of taping)? Thanks!
Thanks. I am building a kite with my nephew and this has been a great explanation.
looks pretty simple. will try with my son.
dude i love this just got done making it 4 an art contest gonna fly in 2 days, cant wait, thank u sooo much
I know its nine years later- but did you win?
Nice video
Thx you helped me with my Geometry project :>
R u still on UA-cam after 9 years
The side that faces the wind should be the good side (the other side on your kite), not the skeleton side because then the wind blows, the skeleton protects the plastic, not letting the plastic flies away.
That's badass bro!
Awesome video,a lot of info. My dad grew up with this model kite an i like this model kite ;)
You forgot adding dihedral. Just tie a piece of string with a loop on each end and tlooping it to the cross spar to bow the spar a little. @epicfantasy oh, ok. thanks alot. i'll try my best to find wooden sticks as they are hard to find. do you know where to get them?
I'm off to make my kite now. Thanks for posting
I want to make a kite to celebrate Easter. Long Live The King.
Good idea for tutorial. Thanks.
is it necessary to have the tail? as in the cloths.
@12m3ly Sorry about the nails. I play classical guitar. Need them.
great tutorial, I found it really helpful. xoxo Lilly
Nice tutorial. I will make this.
I glued the cross pieces and held them in a vice before attempting tie them together. I actually left the whole thing in the vice while I tied and strung it.
@76sagi Yes, I think that would work very well. That material is pretty light right?
where do u exactly tie the string to fly the kite? i put mine in the middle & the kite just fell...i added cloth and tied them in a kot but they fell off what do i do/
nice video. i hope it is easy because i have to make one for a project. if it works or i have a good great i will tell you.
Hi, where do you suggest you tie the tails on for best results? How long do you suggest the string to be for the initial test? thanks for posting this video!! Those of us who are visual really appreciate it!!
Cool
Hi, I have question regarding the string you hold while flying the kite. Could Sisal Twine be a substitute?
how would you put or tie the strings?
Back in the motherland,i used to make kites of different shape, with china paper and light/strong fishing line. The shina paper is not exacly a paper but is more like film paper.Light and strong. And used to fly them in the beach,Used to go as high as the closest clouds.
@spencer3322 You are very welcome, have fun!
epicfantasy how do put it to get there
Thanks but can u add more about the making of tail thanks....materials length etc what best etc.
Duct Tape is a bit heavy but I say go for it. Only one way to find out!! It will probably be fine :)
Where do you connect your spool of string, at the cross? The video didn't show that part. Thanks.
Hey thanks for doing this video, it really helped...
thanks for your help!
i need to know wgere do i attatch the string to fly the kite to it i have a spool of string with the hook on the end but where do i attach it?
What happened to us remember flying kite and riding bike playing marbles now our heads are down in looking at a brick
