What is so impressive about these videos is how much Jay knows about the cars and the fact that he seems to be able to drive anything that comes into the garage. In 1910 they were a long way yet from standardizing the controls, so every car maker designed the controls for their vehicles differently. Plus, the steering geometry had yet to be perfected so these types of vehicles were a beast to handle. Yet Jay handles it just fine. I LOVE how he doesn't disguise his ignorance, such as not knowing that the car didn't even have a reverse gear when he got in and drove it. That greatly raises my opinion of him (which is already pretty high).
You need a reverse gear on a race car in case you forget something at a pit stop. Motorcycles don't have reverse. Sharks are forwards swimming fish. Aside from hummingbirds, you don't see birds flying backwards either, much. Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-reverse gear. I use it everyday to park in my driveway, for the quick Batman take off.
Great point. Jay has never been egocentric or concerned about appearances, and 3 years later, I'm just now seeing this vid for the first time. I love that he included the "oopsie, no reverse!" bit in. Really keeps the video grounded.
I was just about writing the same regarding Jay. Speaking ignorance, I haven't seen Jay Leno since The Tonight Show in mid 90ies, then TV channels here in Denmark switched to other shows, so not really watched him the last 20 years or so except for his guest apperance in a Top Gear episode. Watching Jay again the last couple of years in Leno's Garage has made me an impression of a very much down to earth guy speaking as he was your nearest friend, without any need of boasting his knowledge. Admire him even more now. And yes the imperceptible comment about no rear gear just confines the picture of a really likable man.
Amazing car.. I bet the vid doesn't do much justice to the sound it actually makes. Unbelievable to think this car is over a century old! Would love to see a race of these monsters!
My family had a Leather Goods shop at Farnsworth & McDougal in eats side of Detroit and my Great Grandfather made "Bonnet Straps", along with horse harness goods along with shoes and bags from 1910-1949.
originality matters more for a museum car and there should be examples in museums. but for a individual who wants to drive it time to time... totally agree with you
According to Wikipedia, Buick was credited for developing the ohv engine. It also states that the ohc engine wasn't developed for another two years. So if all that's correct I think we're looking at the most technologically advanced race car in the world in 1910 (at least under the hood). Learned so much from this episode. Finally some automotive engineering history the French didn't beat us to..
***** VERY VERY Close! In Fact Burman did "Copy" the Peugeot engine but did improve it greatly. But that still goes on today. I'm stay its right but its the name of the game to improve on the last guys design. www.billzilla.org/2cam.jpg
Thank You for caturing the running engine without the hood - valves going up and doing - sooooooo beautiful!!!!!!!!!!! Fantasdtic car, fantastic museum, fantastic show
@@twistedyogert Because most of these cars up until then had total loss lubrication by drippers, and hand oiling of the valve gear. Some of them even had open crankcases. The Ford Model T was rather advanced in that it had a fully enclosed sump, valve covers, and crankshaft seals.
What a busy setup! OHV in 1910! Essentially no brakes, no reverse and a fire breathing dragon! Just go as fast as possible and pray! And Jay simply deals with it and it's no wonder. This is cake compared to some of his "steamers"! Thanks for the ride!
I remember seeing this very car at the Back to the Bricks car show in Flint a few years ago. I stopped and took a good look at it. Old race cars like these fascinate me.
Thank you for showing us your automobile collection and preserving such magnificent machines. In this video you laughingly mentioned concerns of your neighbors complaining about noise, as you are next to an airport I’m sure that was Joke. I would suspect that your neighbors appreciate you as a neighbor and come to their windows to view your latest antics.
switchbuckle5th I like that Jay Leno provides this show free on the internet. I think it really shows how much of a true auto enthusiast he actually is. All of the legal limitations that t.v. shows place would probably dilute the content and purity of this show.
Why would you take this wonderful concise content and pad it out with needless narration and cliffhangers? I can already picture a shot of Jay turning the key of some rare old car just before a fade into a commercial break, because all of us have such shitty attention spans we'll change channel as soon as we hear the engine.
What a work of art! I find it incredible that it had overhead valves, was capable of over 100 mph over 100 years ago. The car itself was barely 20 yrs old and it had advanced so much. Incredible video!
That thing may be kind of hard to maintain but the educational value makes it well worth it. That was vary interesting, it really takes you back in time.
I just love these old cars... there's almost no distinguishing where the man ends and the machine begins... You're so part of the vehicle it's beautiful!
Loved when you mentioned your dad's buick wildcat. My dad has a 61 lesabre wildcat nail head v8 we are slowly rebuilding. I love the old mirrormatic instrument cluster. This one came fully loaded power everything and under dash a/c. 18.5 feet long, seats 6 with room to spare and even with a full size spare tire you can fit in an extra engine and trans in the trunk along with your luggage. Hahaha smooth as a boat on even the worst roads and built like a tank.
i feel like jay had his hands full with this one. hilarious! he usually cruises along and comments about the car but with this one he didn't have much time to say anything. it was like he was fighting for his life all the way "no reverse? no wonder i couldn't find it." hilarious!!
I so look forward to your weekly episodes. Thank you for keeping me in touch with the motors of my youth and earlier. I used to have a few older British motors and an ex London bus. Not all at the same time I hasten to add! Ill health cut all that short and now I rely on the old car shows Your own, Wayne Carini, Boyd Coddington and our own Wheeler Dealers are my favourites.
wow what a nice ride I have to say jay you must be the most lucky man on earth but you also earned it through hard work unlike most people so you deserve It :)
Jay, boy that looked like an absolute handful! Hilarious, your full senses being used, hands everywhere and that thing just wanting to go.....beautiful automobile.✨
That was awesome Jay. Love that 1910 Buick. I would love to build a replica car like that or find something for sale that could be restored to its former glory. The sputtering and popping, the unique character of the pre-war cars. It was such a wondrous time in history as many people still hadn't even seen many cars in a lot of the united states at that time. A lot of people assume all these cars were riding around town in 1910. Not so, as only REALLY wealthy people could even afford a car which cost more than houses. I can imagine a kid standing on the side of a dirt road in the early part of the century looking in awe and wonder as a car drove by. The movie War Horse has a scene where the boy is riding his horse next to a road with a punk driving his fancy car by with a pretty girl. Thats probably exactly what it was like. Thanks for showcasing the vehicles and products you do at your garage! Its one of the best shows on the internet.
OK Pur Sang, new model for your portfolio of exact replica builds........1910 Buick Bug Recreation! I'll take mine in red please! Absolutely incredible car. Louis Chevrolet looked like a hell of a guy. Big burly guy who loved engineering and then racing automobiles. What a great legacy he left behind. And what a great time in the infancy of automobiles around the world. I think Louis Chevrolet, David Buick, Henry Ford, and the rest of the MANY, MANY (there were HUNDREDS of vehicle manufacturers in America in the early days which many people aren't aware of or have forgotten, most of which went out of business), would all be amazed at what the automobile (and automobile racing) have evolved into now. Hybrid vehicles, Electric Vehicles that can go 300+ miles on one charge, GPS Navigation, Android Auto, Apple Car Play, 27+ computers on an automobile to operate it, remote start, digital dash boards, automatic driving vehicles, automatic parking features, camera's all over the vehicle so you can see 360 degrees around the car inside the car, and the list goes on infinitely compared to what the automobile started out as. They surely would have been both amazed and more importantly PROUD of what their accomplishments and innovations have turned into now. A shout out and THANKS to all the guys like Louis Chevrolet, David Buick, Henry Ford, August and Fred Duesenberg, Harry Miller, and all the rest of the innovators who made their mark in American automobiles and racing heritage in our great Country.
I love your car shows, great education on old and new vehicles. When I was a kid I had a Chevy Biscayne with push button three speed. And a Studebaker Lark that allowed my to shift to reverse while going downhill that didn't go well.
hes said this before but the story went a lil bit different. went to bugatti guy and was told $500 and then he went to The Bridal Shop right down the street and they told him $15. so which of these are we supposed to believe?
Hello jay just wanted to say thank you for showing us all this wonderful machines that you get the pleasure to experience first hands once again thanks and hope all is well in your life sir
Well that was just fabulous! I live in Flint and go to the Sloan Museum every year for their car show! The Buick Bug is often out and running during the show. They have had it down to the antique car races at Meadowbrook. When it's going at speed it does indeed smooth out! There is actually a Buick Gallery at the Sloan that is an entire separate building. Many many special GM vehicles and other automotive and Flint history on display at the main museum including Flint's part in the Lumbering era and the Carriage industry era. The automobile era was Flint's fourth incarnation.
I am a member of Los Angeles Live Steamers club in Griffith Park. Jay will drive one of his steam cars to our spring meet every year. Almost like being his neighbor..
The more modern race cars like this were Sprinters, and they had just switched from a four cylinder to the eights when I came along. Ascot was a dream come true, methanol fuel, ground pounding audio and crazy fast action on dirt. What a beautiful car. It looks like it will get out and move too! I thought they were coming to bludgeon you Jay for grinding those gears! LOL Many thanks to the Flint's Sloan Museum!

great that that did not get edited out

And guys back then drove these at 100 mph? That's brave!
The land speed record for 1911 was 141.73mph. record stood till 1919 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blitzen_Benz
Ben Wright
And no seatbelts.
Brave, and often fatal.
We die like men , BULLY!
Good God, Jay has balls of steel! I love how he just jumps in and has a drive of anything.
love how the one back wheel locked up everytime he pulled that brass hand brake lever!
Amazing car.. I bet the vid doesn't do much justice to the sound it actually makes. Unbelievable to think this car is over a century old! Would love to see a race of these monsters!
yeah such a great channel but the audio while riding and driving is really bad.shame they don't pay more attention to detail
My family had a Leather Goods shop at Farnsworth & McDougal in eats side of Detroit and my Great Grandfather made "Bonnet Straps", along with horse harness goods along with shoes and bags from 1910-1949.
A pre World War 1 race car...104 years old. And on the road. Outstanding!
originality matters more for a museum car and there should be examples in museums. but for a individual who wants to drive it time to time... totally agree with you
JLG. The best car show in the world. Thank you for sharing with us.
Hell yeah, thanks Jay! I've read about this car but didnt know it still existed and def didnt think I'd see it run on the street.
People in the area must hear all these different engine noises and they must be thinking: "What the fuck is he driving now?"
haha probably, but im the kind of guy who would love to wake up to every one of them. even the steam cars.
chuga chuga chuga chuga
+Gary Seefeld ...
good 1
myles balkom they're basically silent
So cool to see these cars and learn the history, truly a service.
Maybe Jay will loan these guys his mechanic.
now that is awesome !

Overhead Valves in 1910 -- unheard of! Very cool car!
Bob Burman that race one of the Bugs, had:
Dual Over Head Cams. 4 valves per cylinder (Hemi) 4 cylinder in 1913!
***** VERY VERY Close! In Fact Burman did "Copy" the Peugeot engine but did improve it greatly. But that still goes on today. I'm stay its right but its the name of the game to improve on the last guys design.

That engine sounded so good. Ya gotta love it. Chevrolet driving a Buick with a Dodge Ram painted on the hood.?????
This show really should be on television...it would make for great tv if it were on something like The History Channel.

switchbuckle5th
you watch television?
ok....
cool.
switchbuckle5th
Only problem is that there are no programs pertaining to history on the "History " channel anymore .

Wow! So far ahead of its time for 1910.
It really had some impressive acceleration! Looked fun to drive.
the sound! the engine! I'm in love.
Sounds like a ww1 engine lol
+marco “t500” jonker Well it is a 1910 so it is pre-WW1.

one of the best sounding engines
Jay Thank you for sharing your passion with these automobiles
Thanks
Joe
"Death Trap"
OMGosh
Those guys had balls the size of those cylinders back-in-the-day!!!
Jay is all over the place with this thing.built to race only..not meant to drive around, but vintage to the MAX! (thanks-4-upload)
That thing looks rough to drive, but sure is awesome!
that car look scary even at 20 MPH. lol
imagine it at 65.
Or 100.
For real.
Especially in a small neighborhood.
I love how even though Jay is a millionaire, he is modest and bought the strap for $12 vs $500.
I don't blame him. You don't get to stay a millionaire long if you don't pay attention to the money.
That's why he's a millionare

No ads!
TARDO
$12 or $15 I think is easy to mistake.
So both
7:08 seeing those valves cycle in the open is a delight
They sold manually lubricated ohv cars in the early 1900s.
I was working as an intern at the sloan museum when this took place I got to help prep the car for the show it's such a neat piece of history
Hello jay just wanted to say thank you for showing us all this wonderful machines that you get the pleasure to experience first hands once again thanks and hope all is well in your life sir

I really would!
Yes
I am a member of Los Angeles Live Steamers club in Griffith Park. Jay will drive one of his steam cars to our spring meet every year. Almost like being his neighbor..
jay leno, the guy that makes your car appreciate in value just by sitting in it n camera, great video.
Amazing car
Super awesomeness ! Jay Leno Lovin every minute of it!
Got to love that flaming beast :)
WOW....!!!!! it is so awesome.....i would really like to see more vintage racing cars and Bonneville racers here....
I second Bonneville stuff
Third
Jay Leno is crazy. I ❤️ him.
Sloan museum is amazing if your ever in Flint Michigan for the back to the bricks cruise in August you have to stop by and see it.
I just love this stuff! Thanks Jay!
Gotta be a blast to be jays neighbors and get to see all the wild cars!
I love Jay. Always an honest and modest guy. Settle for the $12 straps. Thumbs up!
I can’t stop smiling watching Jay enjoy the hell out of driving a completely reckless Buick race car from 1910
That is bad ass!
American Muscle baby!
This car is coooolll love the large rims and wrap around radiator.
love your show! watching it all the way from New Zealand. Its so good learning about cars ive never heard of or seen before
Jay your one lucky man, must be a world Record getting to drive so many antique Cars
Jay is a crazy person.
He cracks me up.
He’s the type of crazy I like.
Wow i love the way it sounds
What a stunning Woman. Great piece of history. Looks like a pain to run.
Awesome! And this thing is freaking fast and agile for a 1910 car! And it really looks good!
Looks fun to drive!!!
Steering must suck I bet.
Rick Boyle Jr. But not worse than an old tractor I guess...
Rick Boyle Jr. Yes, but that is so not what it was made for! ;)
+Badtaste21
How cool would it be to make a tractor out of one of these and use it today? That'd be one sexy tractor.
xelena Both were made to drive. A tractor should pull things better, but that's nitpicking xD.
Looks like my soapbox derby car I raced for cub scouts a long time ago. Another cool presentation Jay.
Looks a lot more aerodynamic than those race cars from the 20s
Jay! that is plain Gorgeous my friend,,, How lucky you are having the chance to Experience such great Cars in this Life time, Chimo!
If anybody could drive that beast its Jay Leno. He knows his cars
The more modern race cars like this were Sprinters, and they had just switched from a four cylinder to the eights when I came along.
Ascot was a dream come true, methanol fuel, ground pounding audio and crazy fast action on dirt.
When these older cars ran, it was common to get killed in a crash, I am happy to see that those days are gone.
What a beautiful car. It looks like it will get out and move too! I thought they were coming to bludgeon you Jay for grinding those gears! LOL Many thanks to the Flint's Sloan Museum!
It's just cool to see historical cars like this out driving. What a cool car.
I love the sound of it. It seemed to be running a little rich. But that's a good thing if you don't want to do another rebuild in the near future.
I would love to see you do a television show about cars, Jay!
Thank you for the video!!
I actually saw this very car at Flint's 'Back To The Bricks' car show either in 2015 or 2014, I can't quite remember though. What I do remember is being excited to see a rare car that took a lot of thinking about what you are doing to drive it.

Don't know which was funnier Jay watching you struggle with this beast or rolling the Baracuda. You epitomize the phrase do what you love you won't work a day in your life.
Awesome to see Jay driving that beast, sputtering and smoking. You gotta hand it to him, he will drive anything.
What a great car. Thanks for sharing it with us.
cool as all hell
What a fabulous looking car!
Jay looks like he's having so much fun! He's going round probably doing 40mph but he looks like he's doing 140! Super cool!
Jay has the greatest collection I've ever seen. I wish I could afford just one of those great cars.
Awesome and fascinating!
Thanks for showing the car Jay very cool!
Starting at 7:15 or so, that is such a beautiful, rhythmic sound.
such modern design for 1910. beautiful
