    It's a combination of problems, such as oversaturation, no artist development, tiktok and social media making it difficult for real artists to cut thru the noise of content creation. And one of the biggest problems is the labels signing tiktok stars rather than real artists. There's alot of rappers out there who can compete, they just don't get the recognition they deserve because of lack of marketing. And labels were the ones assisting artists with marketing and artist development nowadays an artist has to be popping before a label can give them a chance

    It is not just rap, it is everything that is being watered down and over saturated. In the age of social media, we are constantly being over stimulated and over fed information and entertainment. Also due to everyone wanting to be social media famous, being a celebrity in it of itself has died out. Before, we used to be able to anticipate an artists album, an artist releasing a video because we did not have easy access to it. Now we have over access to everything in the palm of our hands quite literally. So this does not allow people to appreciate anything. Also rap has not been rap for a long time. I say it has been died for a long while now. What "rap" today is actually just pop now. Actual rap is back to being underground. Mainstream rap is absolutely dead and gone today. It is all about quantity not quality and that is with every thing, not just rap and not just music. Entertainment as we know it is all about tik tok and memeworthy buzzwords to repeat like some npc bots. It's sad what the world has turned into. The moment we gave every single human on this planet access to become "famous", that is the exact moment being a celebrity died and if that is the case, there will be no such thing as a "superstar". That word itself has lost all meaning. I also think people like Peep, Juice and XXX were supposed to carry the new wave for the new generation but they all died, leaving the previous era of Cole, Drake and Kendrick to pick up the torch once again.

    Great Video Brother, I've been watching a few of your pieces now and I like what you do. The Blondie point while poignant seems to omit the real pioneers that made hip hop legendary. Sugar Hill Gang, Kool Herc, and others were grinding and creating this sounds and it was already picking up its own steam. The Blondie Crossover was an inflection point but not the turning point in my opinion, the genre was already on its way, but yes more eyes and ears were opened after that hit!

    • @MattMiranda
      @MattMiranda  4 місяці тому +1

      Well said and thank you, for the Blondie point I absolutely could be a little off but this is how one of my professors for "History of Hip-Hop in Black American
      Culture" taught it. I saw some things that backed it up but likely could've also found things that saw it a different way.

    " im so mean i make medicine sick" is his hardest quote 🔥🔥 love how you went through the history of hip hop in this one.. i think some strong contenders for next hip hop super stars are JID, Baby Keem, 21 Savage, and Yachty.. funny enough they are all "students" sort to speak of the big three. I would also throw Tyler, The Creator in there but he seems to care more about making a name in music in general more than rap itself. Great video! Definitely made me think

    I wouldn’t say raps dead but the mainstream trap stuff definitely it is, and we’re in a transitionary phase like 2007-2008, and I think something weird but extremely cool is gonna happen where lyrical rap combines with that yeat/ken Carson opium sound with other styles potentially mixed in.

    I would agree that industry rap / hip hop is dying for the reasons you say, plus more.
    But rap/hip hop itself isn’t dying. It’s going back to its underground roots. Tech N9ne is doing better. You got people like NF, Gawne, jelly roll, yella wolf, etc growing. So underground is coming back and country rap is on the rise

    I ll tell you another thing. No one feels pression as they all do tik tok rap jn order to stay on trends. This thing, even if it trends , people know it sucks and its wrong. No talk for real problems, just flex, sily sounds etc. Last rappers that talked about something different from that are x, juice,trippie redd and mgk. But they re either dead or not having the clout anymore.

  • @Drummer_LJ

    I see ur point, but you cant really compare any of it. The big 3 definitely dont have everyone talking. As much as i am a fan of the 3, theres not nearly as much buzz about them internationally as peeps like pac and big. Everyone and their moms know about big and pac, wherever you are, same with eminem and I'd say drake is the only guy who has that kind of relevance together with kanye west. Even tho cole and kendrick are the superior emcees imo, drake is indeed a gigantic superstar.
    But the problem comes when you say no one competes for a slice of that pie. First off, lot of new rappers are proving themselves to be incredibly relevant in the rap game on a similar emcee type rap the big 3 are on, like denzel curry, jid. You named juice and x, and while they have huge fanbases, its not about claiming any type of throne. Neither of those guys or other giants like lil uzi vert, yeat in recent years, travis scott or lil peep have that competition for claiming any type of throne. Theyre there to make music and letting their heart out without wanting to be in everyones top 5. So a whole different landscape that cant be compared to the competitive emcees like kendrick, cole or drake (drake a little less).
    Also we definitely have huge superstars in this era of rap. Names like post malone or even a doja cat make numbers that are absolutely insane, post malone more than doja. Then theres rappers like lil nas x that also commercially reach far beyond the usual market.
    All in all in a long untethered comment, i think you should consider the context of the rapper. Is it a hungry competitive rapper, a commercial more poppy rapper or the emotional type of rapper. Some can be all 3, but the subgenres theyre in have to be examined and categorized in their own superstar definition
    Edit: i also completely forgot to mention, tyler the creator is definitely THE guy to come for a spot in the top 3, and if he continues like he is now, it wont be long before he is. He hasnt only impacted the rap game, he impacted culture

    • @MattMiranda
      @MattMiranda  5 місяців тому +1

      I would argue that Post Malone, Doja, maybe Tyler depending on the album are all not really rap and more viewed as pop, even if that should not be the case. I also don't think Uzi, Travis, Yeat get near the impact of a Cole or Kendrick.
      In closing I think rap was moving in a direction with X and Juice that it was never able to really transition into because they died, leaving it in an in-between state that should be sorted out in the future. Just my opinion though, doesn't mean I am right about any of it and you do have some great points.
      Thanks for watching and the conversation!

    I think there are several people who made huge impact on music within the past few years. No one can deny it, Jack Harlows got serious talent as a white rapper. Another still very relevent rapper is JID (even though hes old), Ski Mask the Slump God, 21 Savage, Lil Baby, and so many more. I will say, I dont think anyone is going to just top Emenim or Kendrick's talent honestly. Also, sorry but u kinda forgot about MF DOOM the whole video and that made me sad xP
