Love this pack ! my son has one . i will too, prior to this season. this pack carry's itself. has camp set up for you, when you arrive. this pack can even start a fire in the pouring rain with no fuel . you can not go wrong with this pack.
Thing I love most about this bag is the detachable hood. I use the hood in colder months when lugging Warm clothing, down bag etc. In summer I compress it as don’t carry as much wild camping gear. Best rucksack I ever owned
Yeah pretty much. Osprey bags have a system made for trekking poles called "stow-on-the-go" There is a bungee cord in the bottom left side of the bag and on on the left shoulder strap. Then you just take both poles, collaps them, insert them in bottom bungee cord and then the bungee on the shoulder straps and pull the cord tight. And they are out of the way. Pretty clever :) Btw i have 3 Osprey bags, including the one in the video :)

I will be doing some day hikes this year ( was supposed to be a 5 day hike in Ontario Pukaskwa but I damaged my groin so no long hikes for now - sad times ) - For the life of me I could not understand how the torso length moved up and down until you showed me in this video ! Thanks! I am 6'4" and 290lbs. My old osprey does not fit. Its just a 48 and if I lost 40lbs it would fit again. But I need a bigger pack for winter and my kelty 6650 red cloud is just worn out. No cushion in it at all anymore. Looks like you had extra strap so it should fit me just fine.
Never mind my last comment. I found the velcro underneath the cloth protectors. I guess they do that for shipping, or maybe the belt can be used without the velcro.
I'm just waiting to see if some users report any squeaking from the frame. I've had three Ospreys and two developed squeaks. The tensioned backpanel makes a lot of sense as long as it doesn't talk back on the trail. Good review man.
For the most part, the details was great and enjoyed it very much. However, I think he skipped to quickly over the water reservoir element. On mine, there is a zipper that looks reversed (on the opposite side I believe) so I was looking forward to seeing how it is installed into the pack, but never really saw that.

Nice review but you made a mistake. The loop you showed is not primarily for trekking poles but for ice axes. The feature for the poles is the stow on the go attachment points, a rubber cord on the shoulder strap for the pole handles and a covered rubber cord at the bottom of the side mesh pocket (the pocket you use for the water bottle). These two points are located on your left when the pack is on your back. Look it up.

I just buy the OSPREY ATMOS 65 w RC in the same color like the video have. From this backpack missιng the letters "AREI" in the rain cover and missing the small rain cover inside the other pocket on the top. This is normal or i must to ask for this?
Did they change the model since you did this vid? On the same pack I received today, the hip belt extensions (the padded part) doesn't have velcro inside like yours does. They just slide in and out freely if the straps are loose, but because of the way in which the belt straps are attached, you adjust everything - the straps and the padded extensions - using the straps. Seems much easier to do than you showed in your vid. I'll have to check it out once the pack is full.
Not easily. I have the Atmos 50 and was disappointed at the lack of webbing/attachment points on the bottom of the pack for tents, sleeping pads, etc. I had to sew some webbing to the bottom to give me additional tie points for my old 2-3 man tent. The design of the removable lid also makes loading gear on top of it difficult. The tent issue is one of the reasons I just bought a much newer, smaller, lighter and more pack friendly Kelty TN 2 tent, and am waiting the arrival of my new Aether AG 85.
How does the dark grey color hold up in direct sunlight (in regards to heat)? I know that the darker the color, the more heat will be absorbed. Any thoughts?
Not sure if youve ever handled the Volt 60 by opsrey but I bought one yesterday. The only difference I can see between the two is the back ventilation and maybe the build quality. I bought the volt for 150$ while the atmos was selling for around 260$. I would say the volt is a perfect budget version of this bag. Would anyone agree?

Can I ask your rough size? I got fitted and land between a medium and a large,I tried medium on in store but ended up buying a large a week later. It fits great but I'm still weary if I'm not seeing a place the large is too large. I'm 6' 185lbs and a 32" waist.
I got my Atmos the moment they hit the stores in 2015. I go on about a half-dozen hikes per year, some shorter, some longer, but the mesh looks like it just came out of the REI showroom. No worries on that at all.
Great review. I had bought this pack also and it feels so nice. I just wanted to see what others are saying about it. Just have not had the time to hit the trails. There is a little spot on the shoulder strap that has a loop and says trekking sticks. not sure if it for a quick grab for them or what. Any ideas?

Thanks! It carries very nicely. The bottom of the mesh where it meets the lower back actually makes my back feel better in general and the pack basically puts the weight there but the mesh is so darn nice, it's like a mesh trampoline. I love everything about this bag. My only real nit pick is that I wish the color was darker and that the straps were maybe black. But I can't complain. I went with the 65 because I'll be carrying addition camera gear. I was looking into the lowpros but I wanted something that would be more comfortable and adaptive to my specific body. I believe it was in the top compartment. I think I pulled it out in vid. Maybe they forgot to include one?? I'd bet they send you one if yours isn't there. The customer service is superior.
The zippers are a weak point of the Atmos 65 AG and probably some other bags of that family too. After I bought this bag I saw this weakness confirmed on some reviews on shop sites. On first full load usage one of the zippers on the side broke and ripped the fabric open. At that time I was hiking in the woods and not very happy with an unusable side pocket and stuf I could not store anymore. It wears absolutely fantastic though, but I prefer a sturdy bag. So I returned it.
their website says "Osprey will repair any damage or defect for any reason free of charge - whether it was purchased in 1974 or yesterday. If we are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, we will happily replace it." NICE.
A couple of things I noticed while I was playing with (and ultimately buying) this pack last night at REI (thank you 20% coupon and dividend burning a hole in my wallet). The large model fit a BearVault BV500(the taller one) fairly well in the lower compartment. I was able to wedge the bear can in the medium but I'm not sure how well it would fit when the pack was loaded. The hydration sleeve is freaking deep, like fingertips to elbow long, If you're water bladder doesn't have a way to hang from the loop at the top (like the Osprey bladder's hook) it's going to fall all the way down to the bottom. Also fishing the drinking hose through the hole out may get a bit old quickly. As a 6'3" 240lbs guy, I could feel the medium rubbing on my trapezius (neck to shoulder muscle) after just a lap or two around the store, and I'm not particularly broad shouldered. With the large I didn't notice this. I had the shoulder straps slid all the way down on the large and with the medium I was a around the middle of the range. The adjustment range on this pack is crazy. I'd definitely suggest trying the different sizes if say the hip belt on one size doesn't quiet feel right since the shoulders have such a great height range.
***** REI is awesome. When I really want to look and think about a bit of gear I find going during the week and a couple of hours till close is a great time. Last night I ended up having two associates working with me and packs. It was great to get a couple of points of view and have plenty of time to try packs etc. Plus it was nice they didn't mind me taking a bear can off the shelf and out of it's box to play with :)
If you remove the lid it does cut down the pack quite a bit and still looks good. I would have gone with a 50 but I got a camera and tripod head I needed the extra room for. If you have a store located close to you see them in person might give you a better idea of how much room you'll need.
why would they make the lid removable without making it into a "day pack?" Doesn't make sense to me. If you're gonna make something removable might as well make it into something useable.
That's a good question. I just got my pack tonight, and still checking out the many features. I had a much larger Gregory Wind River some years ago that did have the removable lid which became a lumbar pack. I never used it that way though - too big for most trips. If I wanted something that big I wore a day pack. With the Atmos on the other hand, the lid isn't so large that it wouldn't make a decent lumbar pack. Still, I don't expect to be using this pack without the lid. Too many little things to put in there.
I just used s hook carabiners turn mine into a fanny pack of sorts I hook it to the arm straps and it sits on my belly It gives a nice big pouch to put all your stuff you need throughout the day as far as food in gear so you don’t have to go through your pack because that’s one thing this bag truly Lacks is getting into storage in the front without taking a whole pack of even getting a water bottle out of the back is tough for me, I also added an external water bottle holder and cell phone case. This is the every mans bag, good all around for multiple uses, could be lighter but the very best bag for carrying weight I’ve ever used. I also bring a strap to turn the lid into a satchel I wear with a cheap ultralight day pack for slack packing
I can't decide if I want this or the 50... I'm going to backpack Europe and I don't want too large of a bag but at the same time a want a backpack that I can use for camping trips. Which one should I get?
HookedOnChronics I'd go with the 65L version and have a small lightweight-bag packed with me for 1-day trips or sightseeing. Personally for me, I rather want to have too much space than too little - especially because I'm an i*d*ot when compressing my stuff to fit 'smaller' bags (: . Plus you can have souvenirs with you when going home! And you can always take off the top, if you feel it's too much.
What is the proper size for me as I'm 5'7"...my guess is medium. Or should I go large? Any thoughts? I'll be hiking the Appalachian Trail and will be carrying a max load of 35 lbs.
Go to one of your local outfitters and have them measure your spine properly. It's never worth assuming your size, trust me I've been down that road before...
I am also 5'7" and onw an Atmos 50. Mine is a medium, but like Joe M said, it is best to have your spine properly measured. I used the info on Osprey's sizing web page and my Atmos fits like a glove!
+cyrus hung No, the points at which this pack attaches to are all soft, backpack like, being the shoulder straps, waist wrap and back mesh. The only part that makes noise, and it is only when trying to intentionally make noise, is the stuff part of the pack, which does not touch your body and does not create noise.
Ive heard these aren't great with heavy loads. Have you loaded it up to 50+pounds yet? I'm considering the Aether 70 or this. I like the fact that the aether has a front panel. This doesn't.
Good review. How does this pack handle on the hips with a heavy load? I have an Osprey Manta for day hikes and I have a Black Diamond Mercury that I use for extended/section hiking. I like the active suspension system on my BD that pivots with my movement. I actually chose the BD over an Osprey due to the active suspension but the trade-off was the ventilation and the water pocket does not fit my 3L Osprey hydration reservoir. I am liking how the continuous mesh panel looks and I know Osprey makes a quality backpack...AND the REI exclusive rain cover and dry sack are bonuses! I have some REI dividend cash I may be spending on a new pack ;)
Cool. I can't really speak on heavy loads quite yet, and I seen someone say they just had a sale or it might still be going on for like 20 percent off. I feel bad bc I'm sitting here just looking at it and haven't had time to really get out and get some actual use on long hikes! Theres always that re warranty too, you can just send it back but I'm pretty sure you're going to be happy with it if you get it :)
Flying90 I just picked this up last night. The lid isn't designed to be a fanny pack. You could loop two of the straps through your belt or belt loops and jury-rig it to be a fanny pack though.
Mark Turnbull It does come with buckled straps though, right Mark? The specs say removable top lid but I was told by a certain large U.S. outdoor gear retailer that it converts to a fanny pack. My assumption was that it was like the Aether or Gregory Baltoro. No? Thanks for pointing that out.
***** Not like the Aether can't speak to the Baltoro since haven't looked at that one. It doesn't have the built in waist strap like the Aether though. You'd have to loop the two hiker facing adjuster straps through your belt to get it to act like a fanny pack. Then it's going to hang down and flop back and forth as you walk. I think fishing a hiking strap through the two adjusters and carry it over a shoulder like a satchel/messenger bag might work better. Good review dude. Have to ask you even though it might be hard to tell given that the pack just hit the market. I had an Osprey Aether 70 for a while. Really liked the pack but it developed a mind-numbing squeak after a year or so. Osprey was really shitty about dealing with it, which surprised me because they'd been cool with other packs I've had that have needed repair, so I dumped it. Do you see anything in the pack that might lend itself to squeaking? Do you know if it's the same frame set up as their ventilated "trampoline" styles. I had the same problem with both a Stratos 36 and the Aether 70. My Kestral 38 is rock solid. Thanks man and, again, appreciate the review.

Appreciate that. I'm actually dealing with another 'squeak' issue with a Gregory Baltoro. Hell, maybe I have some kind of chemical imbalance that causes things to squeak around me. :) Thinking about swapping it out for the Atmos. It's still so new that REI hasn't heard any complaints yet so I thought I'd check with an owner. And yeah man...it's a ticket to insanity when you're in a quiet forest. I've had more than a few arguments with packs in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for the input and happy trails
hi..can i suggest the osprey Porter packs for traveling? your able to store away the straps inside the pack when your not using & just use the 2 different (grab handles) attached to the bag..Google osprey porter packs.

I was going to go 50 but I thought I'd need the extra 15 for my camera (I use a case logic holster bag and put that inside of the pack) it takes up some extra room and I have another tripod motorized head i wanted to carry. Otherwise 50 would be ideal size. As for the dolica, I absolutely love it. I actually got the GX650B204 Proline GX Series 65 inch Aluminum Tripod and Ball Head Combo" it's about 65. I'm so tired of cheapos breaking but didn't want to spend an arm and a leg. I'd def. reccomend the proline, the 50 dollar one is probably good too. I like how you can flip the legs and get super low shots. As for the weight, it's about 3.5 lbs but worth the carry for me. I carry between the top lid and the case now instead of the bottom straps. I don't know what I was thinking lol
What does the EX stand for? The newer packs don't have that so I'm wondering what the difference is between this pack and the new ones

Can you strap on a tent on the bag. If you are hiking somewhere where you have to have a tent with you.

I believe it was in the top compartment. I think I pulled it out in vid. Maybe they forgot to include one?? I'd bet they send you one if yours isn't there. The customer service is superior.
yeah they forgot to include it in mine but they sent one when I told them, in good REI fashion.

I use a case logic holster, same thing basically but had a shoulder strap and a few pockets

The zippers are a weak point of the Atmos 65 AG and probably some other bags of that family too. After I bought this bag I saw this weakness confirmed on some reviews on shop sites. On first full load usage one of the zippers on the side broke and ripped the fabric open. At that time I was hiking in the woods and not very happy with an unusable side pocket and stuf I could not store anymore. It wears absolutely fantastic though, but I prefer a sturdy bag. So I returned it.

their website says "Osprey will repair any damage or defect for any reason free of charge - whether it was purchased in 1974 or yesterday. If we are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, we will happily replace it." NICE.

A couple of things I noticed while I was playing with (and ultimately buying) this pack last night at REI (thank you 20% coupon and dividend burning a hole in my wallet).
The large model fit a BearVault BV500(the taller one) fairly well in the lower compartment. I was able to wedge the bear can in the medium but I'm not sure how well it would fit when the pack was loaded.
The hydration sleeve is freaking deep, like fingertips to elbow long, If you're water bladder doesn't have a way to hang from the loop at the top (like the Osprey bladder's hook) it's going to fall all the way down to the bottom. Also fishing the drinking hose through the hole out may get a bit old quickly.
As a 6'3" 240lbs guy, I could feel the medium rubbing on my trapezius (neck to shoulder muscle) after just a lap or two around the store, and I'm not particularly broad shouldered. With the large I didn't notice this. I had the shoulder straps slid all the way down on the large and with the medium I was a around the middle of the range. The adjustment range on this pack is crazy. I'd definitely suggest trying the different sizes if say the hip belt on one size doesn't quiet feel right since the shoulders have such a great height range.

***** REI is awesome. When I really want to look and think about a bit of gear I find going during the week and a couple of hours till close is a great time. Last night I ended up having two associates working with me and packs. It was great to get a couple of points of view and have plenty of time to try packs etc. Plus it was nice they didn't mind me taking a bear can off the shelf and out of it's box to play with :)

If you remove the lid it does cut down the pack quite a bit and still looks good. I would have gone with a 50 but I got a camera and tripod head I needed the extra room for. If you have a store located close to you see them in person might give you a better idea of how much room you'll need.

why would they make the lid removable without making it into a "day pack?" Doesn't make sense to me. If you're gonna make something removable might as well make it into something useable.
That's a good question. I just got my pack tonight, and still checking out the many features. I had a much larger Gregory Wind River some years ago that did have the removable lid which became a lumbar pack. I never used it that way though - too big for most trips. If I wanted something that big I wore a day pack. With the Atmos on the other hand, the lid isn't so large that it wouldn't make a decent lumbar pack. Still, I don't expect to be using this pack without the lid. Too many little things to put in there.
I heard you can use it as a fanny pack, if that helps you
I just used s hook carabiners turn mine into a fanny pack of sorts I hook it to the arm straps and it sits on my belly It gives a nice big pouch to put all your stuff you need throughout the day as far as food in gear so you don’t have to go through your pack because that’s one thing this bag truly Lacks is getting into storage in the front without taking a whole pack of even getting a water bottle out of the back is tough for me, I also added an external water bottle holder and cell phone case. This is the every mans bag, good all around for multiple uses, could be lighter but the very best bag for carrying weight I’ve ever used. I also bring a strap to turn the lid into a satchel I wear with a cheap ultralight day pack for slack packing

I can't decide if I want this or the 50... I'm going to backpack Europe and I don't want too large of a bag but at the same time a want a backpack that I can use for camping trips. Which one should I get?
HookedOnChronics I'd go with the 65L version and have a small lightweight-bag packed with me for 1-day trips or sightseeing. Personally for me, I rather want to have too much space than too little - especially because I'm an i*d*ot when compressing my stuff to fit 'smaller' bags (: . Plus you can have souvenirs with you when going home! And you can always take off the top, if you feel it's too much.
What is the proper size for me as I'm 5'7"...my guess is medium. Or should I go large? Any thoughts? I'll be hiking the Appalachian Trail and will be carrying a max load of 35 lbs.
Go to one of your local outfitters and have them measure your spine properly. It's never worth assuming your size, trust me I've been down that road before...
I am also 5'7" and onw an Atmos 50. Mine is a medium, but like Joe M said, it is best to have your spine properly measured. I used the info on Osprey's sizing web page and my Atmos fits like a glove!
does this pack make noises during hiking?
+cyrus hung No, the points at which this pack attaches to are all soft, backpack like, being the shoulder straps, waist wrap and back mesh. The only part that makes noise, and it is only when trying to intentionally make noise, is the stuff part of the pack, which does not touch your body and does not create noise.
Ive heard these aren't great with heavy loads. Have you loaded it up to 50+pounds yet? I'm considering the Aether 70 or this. I like the fact that the aether has a front panel. This doesn't.

I tried one, with 26 lbs and it was more comfortable than my hyperlight one with 20 lbs...

How does this pack handle on the hips with a heavy load? I have an Osprey Manta for day hikes and I have a Black Diamond Mercury that I use for extended/section hiking. I like the active suspension system on my BD that pivots with my movement. I actually chose the BD over an Osprey due to the active suspension but the trade-off was the ventilation and the water pocket does not fit my 3L Osprey hydration reservoir. I am liking how the continuous mesh panel looks and I know Osprey makes a quality backpack...AND the REI exclusive rain cover and dry sack are bonuses! I have some REI dividend cash I may be spending on a new pack ;)
Cool. I can't really speak on heavy loads quite yet, and I seen someone say they just had a sale or it might still be going on for like 20 percent off. I feel bad bc I'm sitting here just looking at it and haven't had time to really get out and get some actual use on long hikes! Theres always that re warranty too, you can just send it back but I'm pretty sure you're going to be happy with it if you get it :)
Does AG stand for "Adventure Girl"? I got the Atmos 65 AG and the manual says it's designed to fit a woman's body. =/

I don't have this pack but have been considering it. Yes...it has a removable floating top lid.
Flying90 I just picked this up last night. The lid isn't designed to be a fanny pack. You could loop two of the straps through your belt or belt loops and jury-rig it to be a fanny pack though.

It does come with buckled straps though, right Mark? The specs say removable top lid but I was told by a certain large U.S. outdoor gear retailer that it converts to a fanny pack. My assumption was that it was like the Aether or Gregory Baltoro. No?

***** Not like the Aether can't speak to the Baltoro since haven't looked at that one. It doesn't have the built in waist strap like the Aether though. You'd have to loop the two hiker facing adjuster straps through your belt to get it to act like a fanny pack. Then it's going to hang down and flop back and forth as you walk. I think fishing a hiking strap through the two adjusters and carry it over a shoulder like a satchel/messenger bag might work better.

I had an Osprey Aether 70 for a while. Really liked the pack but it developed a mind-numbing squeak after a year or so. Osprey was really shitty about dealing with it, which surprised me because they'd been cool with other packs I've had that have needed repair, so I dumped it.
Do you see anything in the pack that might lend itself to squeaking? Do you know if it's the same frame set up as their ventilated "trampoline" styles. I had the same problem with both a Stratos 36 and the Aether 70. My Kestral 38 is rock solid.

Appreciate that. I'm actually dealing with another 'squeak' issue with a Gregory Baltoro. Hell, maybe I have some kind of chemical imbalance that causes things to squeak around me. :) Thinking about swapping it out for the Atmos. It's still so new that REI hasn't heard any complaints yet so I thought I'd check with an owner.
And yeah man...it's a ticket to insanity when you're in a quiet forest. I've had more than a few arguments with packs in the middle of nowhere.

hi..can i suggest the osprey Porter packs for traveling? your able to store away the straps inside the pack when your not using & just use the 2 different (grab handles) attached to the bag..Google osprey porter packs.

Broadly speaking, Yes, yes, yes :) i wasn't able to go to the store either and ordered it without trying it on (I wanted it sooner than local stores would have it) So I went for it and love it. If you order from REI you get 1 year no questions asked warranty, so you can send it back if it's not for you! Hope this helps

I was going to go 50 but I thought I'd need the extra 15 for my camera (I use a case logic holster bag and put that inside of the pack) it takes up some extra room and I have another tripod motorized head i wanted to carry. Otherwise 50 would be ideal size. As for the dolica, I absolutely love it. I actually got the GX650B204 Proline GX Series 65 inch Aluminum Tripod and Ball Head Combo" it's about 65. I'm so tired of cheapos breaking but didn't want to spend an arm and a leg. I'd def. reccomend the proline, the 50 dollar one is probably good too. I like how you can flip the legs and get super low shots. As for the weight, it's about 3.5 lbs but worth the carry for me. I carry between the top lid and the case now instead of the bottom straps. I don't know what I was thinking lol
So If I buy this bag from REI， I would get a free rain cover？
