    I thought it was reasonably realistic.
    Interminable outbound flight to the intercept, never knowing if you will even see the enemy today; frantic positioning for high--speed passes that take too long to set up; losing patience and alternating speed passes with stern chases; taking serious damage in a stern chase that you probably shouldn't have tried; interminable inbound flight in a damaged plane, never knowing if you will even see home today; nearly fatal sloppy landing due to insufficient practice and unfamiliarity with prototype warbird rushed into service; exhausted realization that tomorrow you have it to do all over again.
    Or as they say in the Luftwaffe, "Donnerstag".

    DISCLAIMER, please read before commenting:
    This is not supposed to be an accurate representation of reality. That's why the video title begins with: "IL-2 1946:". I'm showing off the game, not history.
    Please don't complain about the Jericho siren effect, I hate it, too. Please don't point out AI deficiencies, I am aware of them and completely unable to do anything about them. I know this was far from a perfect or even a good mission, but it's just how it goes sometimes. Read the description!

      Rule 1 in il2 1946: Don't complain about realism, it's alternative history.
      Rule 2: If you want to complain about realism, do the mission in il2 box. See how that works out.

    The do 335 was the fastest piston engine aircraft during ww2, luckily not many were operational by the Luftwaffe near end of the war

    • @hoodoo2001
      @hoodoo2001 8 місяців тому

      Nope. P-47M was just as fast and was already operational over German skies and in production. Do-335 was only in pre-production at the end of the war. Don't be a Wehraboo. Do-335 would have been very limited in what it could do especially as the Allies had the initiative. It's an interesting Airplane but was not a game-changer in any way. Just another interesting rabbit hole the Germans went down.

    I recall reading somewhere an interview with a German test pilot who successfully harassed a group of Mustangs and Thunderbolts and they couldn't catch or maneuver with him at high speed whilst flying one of the prototypes. He said it would of been easy to get many kills but he was unarmed at the time,with a smile on his face.

    • @zxmar05
      @zxmar05 6 років тому +3

      It's probably not a dog fighter, but for chasing bombers it could have been well suited.

    • @signs80
      @signs80 6 років тому +1

      It was a hugely heavy plane, in combat config it weighed the same as 2 Fw-190Ds!

    • @sd501st5
      @sd501st5 6 років тому +5

      @18tangles
      Service ceiling for the A-1 variant was around 11000 meters or ca. 36000 feet. If you call that "piss weak", I wonder what you'd consider "adequate" for a very late war twin piston engine heavy fighter/ *fighterbomber* ...
      That thing had a frickin internal bomb bay, good for a 500kg/1100 lb bomb, with provisions for two 250kg/550lb bombs under the wings... in addition to the 30mm MK 103 main gun that could penetrate over 90mm of hardened steel armor with HVAP rounds.
      It might have massed the same as two Fw 190D's, but it also had double the horsepower and didn't have double the drag, which is why it is so dang fast at low to medium-high altitudes. Like others said, it's too heavy to be a good dogfighter(then again, the Me 262 wasn't one either...), but it was never supposed to be one.
      Looking at the plane and it's control surfaces, one can extrapolate a few things about its handling. It has a large wing area and ailerons, as well as decently large and counterbalanced elevators. Wing loading might not be good, but instantaneous turn and elevator responsiveness should be good, and roll rate should be excellent at medium to high speeds. With such a large side area plus over/under vertical stabilizers, it looks like it was very stable in the yaw axis, a good thing if you want a stable gun and bombing platform... however, the rudder area is *WAY* too small for this. I can't imagine that the rudder was very effective, which means it wouldn't be suited for anything requiring sudden yaw corrections for aiming... like attacking small, maneuverable planes that know you are there and are actively evading. Yeah, this wouldn't be a good dogfighter at all. It would probably have no trouble going evasive and avoid getting hit, but actually hitting a small maneuvering target? Nope, I don't see that happening.

    • @cowboybob7093
      @cowboybob7093 6 років тому +2

      SD501st, It looks like it has two rudders. Just looking at the game, no research before I posted.

    • @sd501st5
      @sd501st5 6 років тому +4

      Well, it technically has two separate rudders, one on the upper and one on the lower fin. In practice, they act as one. Also, I was looking at both when judging the rudder area vs. the length/yaw stability of the plane... the rudder area is *tiny* compared to the plane.
      To illustrate this, here we have the Ta 152 which had an enlarged vertical stabilizer and rudder to compensate for the gained length over the Fw 190D(yes, this is never produced variant, but it doesn't matter because the length to rudder area ratio stayed the same for them all):
      forum.warthunder.com/uploads/monthly_2017_12/sideview.png.d6aa43ee702c192e0578d5626660dd20.png
      Now compare this ratio of vertical stabilizer+rudder to that of the Do 335 side view on the bottom of this picture:
      cdn-frm-us.wargaming.net/wowp/us/uploads/monthly_07_2014/post-7290515-0-50521100-1406194058.jpg
      ... and take into account just how much more mass this rudder area has to move on the Do 335 compared to the Ta 152(also take into account that the Do 335's wings are much much thicker than those of the Ta 152). Do you see what I am getting at? >_>

  • @MrAlwaysBlue

    It would have been vulnerable from the rear, due to lack of pilot visibility and exposure of the engine

    • @sd501st5
      @sd501st5 6 років тому +3

      And it had no armored glass to protect the pilot. That was only planned for the B versions. You can clearly see that the A variants weren't fully developed yet, and were more like a pre-series for the B variant.
      Although to shoot the engine out you first have to catch it, which is almost impossible if the pilot keeps this thing at high speeds... ;)
      And at least you have something to catch the bullets behind you, and a second engine in the front.
      Also, several US fighters with extremely successful service careers had the same problem with rear visibility... most famously, the F6F Hellcat, and that one is regularily listed as one of the best fighter aircraft of WW2. The F4U Corsair had the very same problem, until the F4U-4 versions... and out of the aircraft used in the european theater, the P-47 Thunderbolt was just as bad regarding rear visibility, until they introduced the bubble canopy versions in... I think it was early 44.
