At that time we had a draft for military and you could serve in the army or- if you chose so or could go to the borderpolice. The borderpolice secured the borders in germany and the airports and the planes. Than the europian union developed further and with the Schengen Treaty the bordercontrol ceased. They reduced the staff of the borderpatrol massiv und put it tgether with the railway police and renamed it "Bundespolizei". And customs are subordinate to this ministry. And customs check things like illegal work. However, it is common for local police authorities to support customs in this work.
Bundespolizei = Federal Police And what was shown was comparable with specialized units from the FBI or SWAT. But the Bundespolizei has also regular Polizei units, detectives and whatnot. What you would rather compare with the Navy Seals is KSK (special forces of the Bundeswehr), but it is not the same. The KSK is better compared to a mix of other US special forces like Rangers and so on, while the Seals are better compared to "Kampfschwimmer" of the German Navy.
