I am 90 years old and as I listen to these magnificent operatic arias, I thank my dear father for introducing me to operatic music. What a gift!! My father was Scilian and sang all these beautiful operatic arias, yes soprano as well as tenor.

Today I'm feeling nostalgic. I used to listen to these moving and amazing arias with my husband, who introduced me to opera. He passed away very young 18 years ago. I miss those moments of togetherness we had listening to opera and classical music. It was a loving bond I had with him. He was Italian and I am, too. Don't we have some of the most amazing music in the world? Thank you for uploading.

I'm a Black Jersey girl, born in Newark and raised in Elizabeth, and I love Italian opera. I have no idea what is being said but after a few minutes of listening I feel as if Every word is in English. Music has a way of intergrading us all one note at a time. I personally think that the versatility of music brings us all together no matter the race, religion, creed or sex.
Opera is art, and art speak to everyone...also if people do not understand the words

thank you for this astounding collection on what WAS a dreary rainy afternoon. For those who cannot "get into" opera ... well, it is an acquired taste ... I did not get hooked till I was almost 50.
When I was 12 my parents took me to Tosca and I was so determined to dislike it that I don't really remember much, but in the last couple of years (I'm 15), I've really started to like it. I saw La Traviata and Norma which were both really good. The only thing is that people at school think it's really pretentious, but I just think it's nice...

See my comment regarding how to learn to love opera. Classical opera will live forever but who will listen to the rappers of today in 100 years. You are fortunate to have parents to care enough to take you to the operas. Don't let the opinions of your school mates bother you. You are years ahead in your ideas. If you live in a city with an opera guild, join and volunteer in their projects. You will feel a part of the performances and meet a lot of interesting people.
I think it's a very rare taste nowadays.......I'm 14 and ever since I was 6 or 7 I truly love Opera and theatrical Classic Songs and they moved me....sometimes I wish I could go back to this era and just enjoy the sound of music...

Just tuning in. These best opera arias are so magnificent. Something about these just transcend the mundane like no other music.
My Mum played opera while she was pregnant with me; afterwards I had plenty of opera and Classical music exposure and 50 years on it can still reduce me to tears...then came the Beatles, Stones, Dylan etc. and I enjoyed the music of the 60's and on, but this stuff will always be my first preference.

Sicily, the 60s, me aged 5 to 7, sitting next to my grandmother, while she was working on her sawing machine... she tells me of when she used to go to the opera house in Catania... she tells me about curtains opening and revealed scenes, the orchestra in the pit, she tells me about a woman called Tosca, a love and a bad man... the scene on the castle! She tells me of Norma and the beautiful areas she sings, of Mimi, and a barber, the hunch-backed Rigoletto. My imagination runs wild as she hints the areas of the opera. At the age of 14 I got my first record: Norma, in glorious double vinyl disks, I think Anna Moffo was the singer. Thank you grandma Angela.

To be fair, A lot of times it's not the people with the most inherent talent that succeed. It's the ones relentlessly pursue their careers. Working hard, and being determined and smart about it is a much of an asset as having the natural gift. You can accomplish almost anything if you want it more than everything else.
Princess Purity Ok i agree with you of course you have to work hard but you also must have talent. Even if you work harder than anyone you can do nothing if do not have this gift
i suppose that is true. I sing opera, and have a gift for it- but my choices and how I approach my voice have at times been more of an asset to me than my natural gift. I've beaten competitors who had more sought after vocal qualities than I do because i put in more work, and had a healthier mindset. When people beat me it's usually because of their preparation.
that said, I think undervalue the natural gift that I have, and forget that im incredibly lucky and couldnt do this if I hadn't been given the voice that I have. So thank you for reminding me. You're right too. Just don't underestimate what you can do. I believe you can do it.
