For those that are worried about no blue flames, I feel like as she gets more and more off the hook her flames will get hotter thus making them blue. In literally the first training scene where she looses her cool and attacks her trainer her flames turn blue for a millisecond if you catch it
Yeah I agree. I think they’re trying to make the blue flames apart of her story and they’ll come as her rage/madness increases. It’s a decent change considering in the animation they just gave her blue flames and never elaborated as to why they were blue at all.

Yeah, but we don’t see that until after Zuko leaves the fire nation in book 3, and all we’ve seen in this Netflix season is before we ever met Azula, from a much younger actress than the voice actress, who was about 30 when recording the show, and did a very cartoonish, over the top, unrealistic voice for Azula, which no ordinary people have in real life. And I loved all the Azula scenes we got here, her being jealous at Zuko, despite her being better than him, but being stuck at the palace, her helping Zhao the whole time, and her lightning bending for the first time, which is what Ozai wanted, to push her into training day and night, until she could do that, and then she was ready to be given a mission.

In that scene I would’ve thought she’d say something in the lines of “Ty Lee, you are so right, I am perfect. Thank you”, while flicking her hair and looking away as if she’d expect Ty Lee to say that.

Exactly and the thing is, Azula was introduced as she was and I loved her from the get go, now seeing her motivations just gives her even more depth in a way, don't get me wrong original Azula had plenty of depth but seeing that even her, the perfect prodigy, had to work her but off to be taken seriously gives a whole new perspective to the character that is possibly my favourite character in the original series since I was a child

Yes,only saw her brefily in season 1 of the cartoon so we have no idea what she was up to during that time,now in the live action we get to see that,it is hopefully building up to Azula growing to be more like her animated counterpart in season 2.

Of all the changes the reboot made, Azula was the best. There’s no way someone like Azula would spend a whole season doing nothing, so having her work behind the scenes actually was perfect for her character.

"You wanna test me? Set me loose." Such a fantastic way to bridge the arc we already know with the one we finally had a chance to see in Season 1 ar home. It's fascinating seeing Ozai playing the same mind games with her that she uses to manipulate others. That apple certainly didn't fall far from the tree. Honestly in that household it's a wonder anyone was able to break the cycle of violence.
I was hoping to see an unhinged, sarcastic and arrogant Azula, the one you thought was evil from the start until you gradually start knowing her backstory and start feeling sorry for her. Only real fans of the show would feel that this is not the Azula we've grown watching.

@@JohnDoe-il4dz Because they tend to be more interesting than heroes, it's just fiction man, they don't harm anyone, so it's normal that we like more interesting characters that aren't typical protagonists, since I'm the good guy and I do good things all the time, I like them. sacrifice for humanity and stuff, villains have more personality and authors can give them more realistic personalities, although this is not always the case, I mean, look at Thanos from the MCU or Arthas from Warcraft 3 (WoW doesn't count).

@@JohnDoe-il4dz A spider or any bug or animal is not the same, most dislike its appearance, a villain is generally humanoid, so unless it is very ugly that usually does not affect it. Afterwards it depends on their personality and thoughts, or sympathy, although some only like them for being sexy or cool, whether they are men or women. An example would be Dr. Frieza from Batman, he is only a villain because he only wants to revive his wife, no matter the cost and that is the quickest way. Azula, for example, is sexy, cool, and you sympathize with her since she was raised by a guy who wanted the best heir, so he made them grow up in a hyper-competitive environment with her brother, plus their mother only paid attention to Zuko. Or you can just be Mrs. Dimitrescu and be an elegant and mega sexy 3 meter tall MILF.

Of all the changes the live action show made, giving Azula a role in book 1 was definitely the best. Think about it, Azula is not a person who can just Be. She can take on several people, master fire bending, lead armies, manipulate her loved ones… But she can never just _be a girl_ . There’s NO WAY Azula would spend an entire season not scheming or plotting, so this arc actually makes perfect sense for Azula.
Yeah, but the worst was excluding Aang trying to learn firebending from Jon Jon, hurting Katara, and fighting Zhao, without firing a single blow. The impatience when trying to learn firebending and hurting Katara is such an important moment for Aang, that they shouldn’t have left it out. And of course, the agni kai theme never played once.

Its gonna happen, I am willingly optimistic that the writer of this show would not miss such a juicy development, it will happen. Ive been looking for this comment, azula mai and ty lee mustve been hanging around at the buffet season 1.
So the good thing about Azula in Netflix show is that she is being shown as a master tactician which she is. She’s better than Zuko at that.
Also she generated the lightning and that’s a huge win for show. She and Iroh are the only ones along with Ozai who can do this.
But what the show has messed up is
1- Azula’s blue flames are missing. Her blue flames are not because she has hotter fire or because she gets madder etc.
What 99% fans are forgetting is Ozai’s wife (Zuko and Azula’s mom) was Avatar Roku’s granddaughter. So Azula is the perfect union between Royal bloodline and the Avatar bloodline- this is why her fire is blue and stronger than Zuko, Ozai and even Iroh’s.
2-Azula never becomes psychotic until Zuko comes into same frame with her either directly or is mentioned. She is otherwise a very controlled but highly volatile person.
The blue flames do show up - her flames flicker blue suddenly during one of the exercises. I believe they're setting up some new lore about how she acquired the blue flames
And also she doesn’t even remotely look like Azula
In the Anime, Azula is dripping with unhinged psychopathic traits. She looked too 'stable' in the Netflix version. I was expecting her to be more menacing and pure evil. She looks...kinda cute here :)
She only went physco at the end of book 3, and all the scenes here happened during book 1, where we never saw her before, and the actress is much younger than the OG voice actress, and it’s cartoon vs live action.
The actress has a baby face, but I think she conveys Azula's manipulativeness quite well. I thought at first that she was miscast, but her innocent look makes her more dangerous because it catches people off guard. The seeds of insanity are planted and I hope to see her be more unhinged in future seasons.

no hate for the actress, but seriously, thats Mei!? they could just find a better person with pale makeup, and i know that in this season they try to show azula's journey and back stories, and i hope season 2 azula is close to the original, because the real azula is not hot headed and childish like that, thats why azula got her blue flame and master lightning bend in the original series, because she was supposed to be more composed, calm but evil at the same time. (thats why Lightning bend cannot be master by a person with a Zuko S1's personality)
All of the actors seem really fat faced I’ve noticed. Like they all heavy very very chubby cheeks and very wide faces. Not sure if it’s done intentionally but they look nothing like how they should

I haven't seen the OG show, so I don't know anything about it, but I loved this new one...Azula has quickly become my favourite character, I love her "crazyness" and she's so gorgeous...Can't wait to see more of her

I hope they recast this actress and bring someone who can embody the character more both in personality & facial expressions. This Netflix Azula is innocent looking even when she tries to look evil. And everyone keep saying oh it’s bc she’s 14, her character is still young. Well in Game of Thrones Joffrey was a 12 yrs old king. The kid that played him had the best evil grind and expressions, he was just so evil & looked that I hated his character. I don’t get that from Netflix Azula, I hated the cartoon Azula almost immediately.

My opinion, Azula and Mai here are the live action Fluffier version of the anime. .Azula doesn't look intimidating tbh . .in my perspective Azula should be incredibly lean and beautiful but would get people's nerves by just looking at her despite her slim body and besuty. . same goes to Mai ..Mai is depicted as cold or almost emotionless that's her character while Tay Lin character here is ok I think ..
Also, Azula's and Mai's costumes and hairstyles just don't suit the actresses.
They change her from a cunning, psychotic, ruthless super talented princess to a poor princess who's seeking approval from her father.
People must not have watched the Nickolodeon Avatar for them to root for azula.

Azula wasn't crazy in the beginning.Once she got the mission an started losing all the time. She started to lose her shit. I feel like compared to everything else that has come out this show is great.
Yes she only became crazy around the end, but all through out the series, in every scene she's in, she has that commanding presence that will make you either feel fearful or submissive. This actress didnt show any of that.
On contrary, she started slipping because everything went her way. That is when her superiority complex started kicking in. She became more bossy and harsh towards her friends. Thus drove them away to the point they betrayed her. That is when she truly went crazy and started making mistakes.

Azula is both insanely talented and very relatable all at once. I don’t not care what people thinks. But seeing the empathetic side of her is what I like about this adaptation.
The original did have an empathetic side just later on in the show now she’s just acting like zuko and it gets rid of the fun character interaction they had together and it’s also what made the finale fight between them so good
@@turtleboi1547 That’s what I come to realization that everything Azula and Zonai have done was to win their father’s love and approval. But Ozai is not the fatherly kind of person since he sees his children as nothing but prodigies that shouldn’t be treated with love. Hope she gets redemption arc in this adaptation.
@@turtleboi1547 She's not acting like Zuko here, though. Neither of them are. They're more defiant to Ozai, who in the animated series didn't have any serious backlash, and was able to manipulate them flawlessly. Here, both of them fight back against him.
It's possible they either give her a redemption arc or make her take over as the main villain halfway through the series, but at the same time it does give Ozai moments to showcase his own personality. I did notice that Ozai was proud more than angry at Azula when she suggested he unleash her to let her hunt down Zuko, and even when she used lightning.

@@korsekil azula not acting like ozai ruins her character in my opinion, we get to see how his abuse effected both of his children and they were both different, she almost wanted to be like him ( in the way he ruled)she just knew to behave and do what he ask so she could get ahead, it just doesn’t make sense she saw what happened to zuko why would she act a fool? also I enjoyed how they made it seem like she was just a generic villain but failed later on and had cracks in her personality and breakdowns it helped make her more than a generic villain. It’s probably too early to get upset so I’ll stay optimistic but why try to fix what isn’t broken?

The adaptation was simply more humanized, like Ozai for instance actually shows a twisted way of caring for both his children by making them stronger.
Ozai on the show didn’t care whatsoever and was a simply evil conqueror without any source of redeemable qualities nor any sense as to way he was like that.
Anime portrays hyperboles and exaggerations, an adaptation needs to follow the blueprint but bring more dimension, connectivity and a bit of realism.

I mean, defying Ozai's orders AND launching lightning just inches from him? Azula from the animated series wouldn't have dared, at least not this early in the series. But live action Ozai shows admiration for that, so it seems she still is trying to make her father proud.

Azula has been crazy since she was a kid yes but they are right is saying animated Azula would not have dared to shoot lightning at Ozai. We hardly saw much interaction between them one on one, even in the flashbacks. In the end, when we actually see Azula upset with Ozai for not taking her with him during the arrival of the comet, she throws a temper tantrum like a child. When Ozai raises his voice at her, she quiets herself. Netflix Azula looked like she would fight Ozai If she had to. You can see the desperation within her. She'd do anything to prove herself worthy, even standing up against her own father with action, not just words.

Hollywood is all about outer appearance, this girl doesn’t fit it: They should have used someone with a more long face. Her acting is good. Some of you guys have to realise this is Azula BEFORE book 2 which is where she was originally supposed to make her first appearance and not book 1, so obviously she wouldn't be unhinged from the get go. This season just tries to portray how she became the way she was in book 2.
That's ridiculous. The span of Book 1 is at best a few months, enough to change a person sure but far from enough to completely change her personality without enduring some super extreme experience. In the animated series we see that she's the same way even as a child. In fact, it's the reason why she eventually became unhinged in book 3; her mother thinking of her as a monster which haunted her after her only two "friends" betrayed her.
Besides, Azula was confident, arrogant, intelligent, sharp, calculating etc. A born ruler without a hint of hesitation or uncertainty. She is not unhinged until part 2 of Book 3. Zuko was branded with fire and banished from the fire nation, sent on an impossible mission. Azula was the golden child, a prodigy and Ozai's favourite. She needed to prove nothing and already had his full approval, has been since they were children. I believe Zuko said that Ozai had told him that he was lucky to be born, whereas Azula was born lucky; a clear display of favoritism.
Anyways, you don't banish someone, send them on an impossible mission and brand them with a permanent scar in their face if you had any intentions or hopes of having him return as a worthy heir. Only when Azula lied so that he had the 'glory' of not only slaying the Avatar, but also helping Azula conquer Ba Sing Sei, did he force Ozai to acknowledge him. There's absolutely no reason why Azula should feel jealous or inferior to Zuko. The real Azula would not become so emotional, it goes completely against her animated character, not even close. She has been looking down on Zuko since they were children, even emotionally manipulating him with ease. A psychopathic or sociopathic Azula would probably look at him as a toy to play with when she's bored.
Azula is way too narcissistic to care in the slightest about Zuko, and we see this in Book 3 when she helped bring him back to the fire nation as the crown prince. Everything is more or less under her control, that's the impression that she gives until she becomes unstable in B3P2, anything less is a complete disgrace to her character.

@@Sheeya97I'm sorry, but I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to say. Could you please explain in a shorter paragraph? Also, I was just trying to respond to those comments that say they expected to see a crazy and arrogant Azula from the start, which doesn't make sense because Netflix, being Netflix, wanted to change some things and in doing so showed Azula earlier than expected. So they showed her in the past before her original appearance, probably to build character development.
@@ata2697 You're pointing out that this vastly different Azula is only different because this is Book 1 which is before Book 2 where she originally appeared, giving her time to change and develop into the Book 2 Azula.
What I am saying is that it is ridiculous to think that Azula's entire personality could change between Book 1 and Book 2, which is supposed to only be a few months at best. Especially when in the animation we have seen that her narcissistic and arrogant personality has been like this from when they were still children, and this is relevant because it is directly related to her becoming unhinged in Part 2 of Book 3.
What I'm saying is that this Azula is a complete disaster, and if they somehow managed to turn her into Book 2 Azula from this that it would be completely illogical and is just garbage writing.
@@Sheeya97 What you are saying does make sense, but you can still notice that this azula has some aspects of the original but not as strongly shown. I agree with the bad writing part but I thought their approach to her character made some sense. I mean they are rushing some scenes and so I thought for their adaptation they would probably show different aspects of her while growing up and isn't portrayed as strongly as the og Azula was in the beginning since they are changing quite a number of things.
