How to remove a 3M Adhesive Pad Dash-Cam or Helmet-Cam Mount

  • I often get asked about this - so decided I should film the process when I removed my most recent Dash-Cam mount to swap it out for another one. Obviously this works with adhesive mounts from other manufacturers. Most of these claim to be made by 3M, but I have my doubts.
    When using dental floss - don’t use the nice soft expanding fluffy stuff, as it snaps. Use the nasty painful hard string like variant - the cheap stuff - far stronger for this job but not as much fun for your gums.

    Thanks for this - very helpful. Dental floss didn't work for me as it kept breaking so I substituted it with 40lb fishing line. Worked a treat.

    Wow, thank you so much! I had a faulty dash cam mount glued to my windshield and had no idea how to get it off. I'd never have thought of dental floss. It took a long time but finally that ugly thing is off and my windshield is clean again. Very helpful!

    This video just came extremely in handy; I'm selling my car and wanted to move the dashcam to my new car, and I couldn't figure out how to get the darn sticky pad off. It was a real blast from the past seeing your old 2013 intro again!

    I've found it very easy to remove it. All you need is alcohol spray !
    firstly, you have to peel the edge a little bit, then you just spray the alcohol right between the surfaces !
    Keep peeling while spraying. The job done 💪

    I can confirm this works. Put on some external vent screens so I could crack my car windows while it's raining. Had a bad parking job next to a tree pull one off. I was able to remove all the sticky stuff as shown in the video. Once dried (it evaporates almost immediately), I was able to apply some new 3M double sided adhesive strip (comes in different thicknesses) and it has been good as new ever since.
    Also wanted to point out that the 3M double sided stuff is also a good interim for sticking velcro to surfaces that are not flat/smooth. Adds a small thickness to the velcro, but you can do pretty much anything you need to with velcro and 3M double sided sticky pads/strips.

    I find that Turpentine (turps) and its variations as used for cleaning paint brushes work quite well for removing any remnants of 3m tape. It takes a minute or so to work, so in stubborn cases, dab it on and leave it a minute. The longer the 3m tape is in situ, the more difficult it becomes to remove.

    bless you, i spent $900 on a used drum machine that had wood panels stuck to the sides. the panels blocked me from putting on the protective lid I spent another $50 bucks on. two years later, the panels are finally off!! I used a thin shoelace wrapped around two drum sticks like the garotte technique someone mentioned below. genius, good sir.

    I've had great success just using a non-sharp kitchen knife. Slide in a bit and pry...gently, of course. Keep moving it in and it comes off without scratching or breaking anything. I suppose it depends on where you're doing this. For me, it's been glass and acrylic windshields on the car and motorcycle. My most recent dash cam has the clear VHB tape which sticks like crazy, yet peels off easily without leaving any residue. It's very gummy. I plan on buying a roll. 3M VHB 4910 or 4905 depending on the thickness you want. Thanks for the video post!

    I used this method using some strong cotton to remove an old Mini 0803 mount and it worked really well. One thing i would add though is that if you intend to re-use the mount on something else, be careful when sawing through the sticky pad as i damaged the plastic part of mine quite a bit. Luckily the camera was completely broken and getting thrown away anyway.

Dental floss and 2 minutes later the screen was perfectly clean of it and any adhesive residue. My 0801 was refunded and I now have a brand new 0803 which is absolutely fantastic. Dental floss by itself didn't hack it for me, even with gloves to prevent cutting through my fingers before cutting through the adhesive. I found a video from 3M showing how to remove several feet of bonded material easily. They used an oscillating tool and rubbing alcohol which they squirted along the edge at the beginning to act as a lubricant and to aid in the release. I squirted some rubbing alcohol across the edge and then went back with the dental floss, which then cut through the adhesive like "a hot wire through butter". Once the rubbing alcohol evaporated, the adhesive seemed to regain it properties, so I repositioned and remounted the dashcam where I really wanted it using the original used adhesive mount. Maybe in a few days or a few months I will come to regret this if the dashcam falls off the windshield and hangs by the cable a few inches in the air, but I still have the extra spare adhesive piece that came with the dashcam to do it right if necessary.

    Just tried removing the sticky mount from my old DR32 dashcam (been mounted for about 2 years) and it seems to be near impossible to budge -- impressive adhesive strength. Have tried two brands of dental floss and they both broke after several attempts :(
    [update]
    Switched to Colgate floss for the 3rd attempt. Finally making some slow progress -- painstakingly sawed through 5mm worth of sticky pad in about 5 minutes before the floss broke again. I actually had to tie some keyrings to either end of the floss in order to get enough grip to saw through the sticky pad (the floss tape was killing my fingers).
    The sun went down so I'll have to try again later. I WILL remove this sonovabitch eventually!

    • @Techmoan
      @Techmoan  9 років тому +11

      44sunsets you are best with the really cheap stuff that isn't waxed or flavoured, or a ribbon. You could also just use string, or fishing twine. Also try heating up the pad with a hairdryer.

      +Techmoan happy to report that I finally got the mount off fairly easily after a sunny afternoon's worth of baking the windscreen. Heat makes a HUGE difference (the weather was fairly cool before)! The floss sawed through the adhesive like butter.

    • @UCreations
      @UCreations 8 років тому +5

      +Techmoan Heating up can be tricky, because of the glass behind it. Heating the glass causes tension and if there's a weak spot (a small dent for example), it will break.
