These scenes in the halfway house really illustrate how childish and institutionalized Doreen became. Sad to think there are so many real life cases out there.

I loved Beas rhyme about Vera in the Laundry scene 'When they made Vera they didn't add sugar and spice and all things nice'. 'They added vinegar and malice and all things callous'. Brilliant rhythm especially the way Val delivers it. They made me laugh out loud.

Ahh, Doreen, she does have a good heart but dumb as a rock, and totally institutionalized, it doesn't get much more annoying. I am sooo glad to have these early episodes. I didn't start start watching until later on and these have filled in so much of the back stories that I didn't know.
I'm just plain fascinated by the concept and success of the show! A "soap opera" about the inmates of a Women's prison... which has fans WORLDWIDE!? It's a testament to the high quality storytelling and the performances by the actors! And yes, something producers of shows in the U.S. often neglect: continuity! We'll never forget about Frankie but how about George? I nearly forgot about the scoundrel, but obviously Vera hasn't. Brilliant work.

I worked in a halfway house many years ago. It was fun. Weirdest thing was a black guy almost 50. He got a job working on a tree cutting crew. He told me it was first job he ever had. He lived off women and peddled drugs his whole life up til then. I guess at 50 it's a good time to start real honest work.
Not to mention the bar manager Chrissie Latham beds around episode 286, then Maxine Daniels' brother-in-law, and then the security firm boss who The Freak's girlfriend Terri beds in Joan's bed, and finally the Blackmoor screw! Apparently this actor is a marriage and funeral celebrant these days! Busy guy! LOL

i don't mind doreen,the people i remember from watching this in the 90s was doreen,bea,judy,Chrissie,mrs ferguison and lizzie so i always liked them.I can't believe that it was on before 9pm in oz.Here in ireland it used to be on late at night,it seemed a very adult show to be on b4 9.My next door neighbour who emigrated to melbourne in the early 70s used to live next door to the actress who played lizzie there.She died years ago but my neighbour said she was involved wiv cat rescue schemes.

Doreen is so institutionalised that she genuinely can't apply any standards to life situations other than the ones Bea and Lizzie and Franky taught her inside. Sometimes I want to wring her neck but it's really not her fault. It's probably a more common phenomena than we realise.
People forget that Doreen has quite serious learning difficulties as well as a terrible upbringing and never having to be an adult on the outside . I only did 3 weeks in jail and it felt so alien fir the first week that i was free . Its been 11 years now and haven't been back . Not for me ,but some girls have nothing else quite literally

And poor Karen is trying so hard, but Doreen is a weight around you neck that is just not needed. And her friend is no better.... risking the half way house because she doesn't know where to go. That halfway house could help a lot of other people. Not to mention the fact that Karen could end up back in Wentworth.
