    Yeah, my drawing is basically two angle views combined, which could be confusing. The wheels are viewed from directly above, where as the steering wheel was viewed from the front. It would be difficult to show the wheels rotating from the front, which is why I drew it they way I did.

    +Engineering Explained My sister has an 08 Maxima. She has issues steering the car on a cold start. I sat in it to get an understanding and tried turning the wheel, but it behaves as if the pump has gone. So I drove it because my sister says, "The problem goes away after driving it." After the drive, I stopped and tried steering it. The wheel turns with no problem after the drive but any input from you would be much appreciated. Separate note, your channel is great. I have very little friends who enjoy and understand cars, so its nice to see someone like yourself who shares the language. Thank you!

    I just heard someone say 'the car comes with rack and pinion power steering'. Honestly I thought that was a contradiction in terms and that they knew less about cars than me (which isn't much). I can see now that I was wrong, that concept can exist. Helpful video, thanks!

    It all comes down to the gearing of the rack and pinion, in which case it can vary greatly depending on what characteristics and feel you want from the steering.

    2:56 you blew my mind dude, I was going to say the direction of the turn on the steering wheel was wrong. That I started asking myself if I seen the direction right! Anyway great channel, going to subscribe, I'm an engineer too

  • @EngineeringExplained

    The valve alters the direction of the flow, the pump pumps in a single direction. The flow has to change directions in order for the piston to be moved both left or right.

    It's the mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the driven wheels - the entire system doesn't work solely by hydraulics, it does need some driver input.

    It's a great car. Had some trouble yesterday with some misfiring but I replaced the distributor cap and everything seems to be fine now. Great handling though, for the price it's an excellent vehicle. Leaks and burns oil though, so if you do get one just make sure you check the oil level regularly (which should probably be done anyways).

    Thanks for all the great engineering explanations.
    Once the steering valve opens the pressure on one side will increase the steering angle, what stops the angle increasing once the desired radius of turn is achieved, ie a fixed steering angle for a given steering wheel input.

    By which do you mean which type of power steering, or is power steering necessary? I think it's a great benefit to have regardless of car size, as far as type, I don't know enough to give you a confident answer, I think both major types are fine.

    I AGREE with what you say about the steering wheel!! I hate cars that have the "T" so you can't rest your hand on the bottom. Having your hand at the bottom is good for towing when trying to back up. Also good when you are cruising.

  • @1mohan
    @1mohan 12 років тому

    once again a very good explanation, may i suggest that you throw in the implications of suspension or more precisely when the wheel goes over a bump. as this implication will not be obvious to the average punter.

  • @EngineeringExplained
    @EngineeringExplained  11 років тому

    The fluid could be eliminated and simply replaced with an electric motor which places a torque to move the wheels (for example, an electric motor powering the pinion to move the rack, or one powering the rack, etc).

    Please explain or speculate what happens when the hydraulic hose hookups are reversed to the rotary valve unit. I have recently accidentally done just that, with steering fluid spewing all over. I have read that the bushings or seals (?both) will be displaced or “blown”. I plan to repair the rack but wondered if the rotary valve seal or the rack piston seals will be affected. Thanks. If you don’t know or won’t speculate I will follow up after the job is done so you might learn something useful and pass it on. Thanks.

    I was looking for a video explaining what's inside a power steering rack and came across this video. Very well explained but I think it's not 100% accurate. At 6:01 you explain those lines being the high pressure and return line to the pump/reservoir. I think these lines operate the hydraulic piston inside and can both be high or low pressure depending on the steering wheel being turned left or right. The magic happens in the valve/pinion housing and I'd love to know how that works!
