Smt and persona comparisons are rough due to them having such different styles persona has strong characters and bonds between them and tends to have a lighter tone overall where as SMT is more about the world building and clashing ideology with a darker tone and persona gameplay is basically a less complex version of smt's for better and for worse better for accessibility but worse for depth basically smt expects the player to learn all the mechanics and adapt to different situations as they arise where as persona allows you to make what you want and roll with it both games are great in their own right but in such drastically different ways it's kinda unfair to compare them

They're all really different so you're not missing out much by not playing the older ones.
Looking at senju’s demon negotiations is actually so jokes😭
This is my first Shin Megami Tensei game ive ever played and about 3 hrs in this game slaps & the music is so good.. 🔥🔥🔥
I would recommend against auto heal. What it does is just use Dia or any healing spell from your Demons. Issue is that you don't really pick who gets healed yourself so you might end up wasting MP.
Watching the IGN review and learning the SMT fandom's hatred for Persona comparison was the biggest brain move I've seen on UA-cam
Smt and persona comparisons are rough due to them having such different styles persona has strong characters and bonds between them and tends to have a lighter tone overall where as SMT is more about the world building and clashing ideology with a darker tone and persona gameplay is basically a less complex version of smt's for better and for worse better for accessibility but worse for depth basically smt expects the player to learn all the mechanics and adapt to different situations as they arise where as persona allows you to make what you want and roll with it both games are great in their own right but in such drastically different ways it's kinda unfair to compare them
persona has simple "mechanics" or not as complex. Out side of final, secret and super bosses.
@@sarthakarora3212 literally what he said lol.
@@TheKingofHonoredOnes re-read my comment.
You should try SMT3 as well. They’re just as great and even more challenging. Plus I’m pretty sure AfroSenju vs Matador would be video of the year at least.
I'd actauly say this is harder than nocture
@@demi-fiendoftime3825 This is by far harder than Nocturne. Demi-Fiend got fog breath early as freak in the game and it HARD carried. Here you don’t even get all 8 slots to start with lmao
@@ssjeyfreeman0146 And tornado and physical was good the whole game especially after you got focus the fact that buffs aren't eternal anymore makes it harder along with the fact that the bosses are Damage Sponges
this is mad harder than 3 lmao
SMTV is way harder than Nocturne
I really hope Afro continues this, I'd love to see him play through it
Same
34:24 That is basically what happens, one second you're grinding exp., the other 1 lone demon wipes to floor with your party leaving you close to dead.
Yeah as someone who's played many an smt game. Yeah don't expect to know any character like that. Its more about the story and philosophy than character growth
“MY SLIIIIIIME” 😭😭😭💀 sounded like calebcity in parts of that whole last section 😭😭 the Anime shock after the pixie died 😭😭😭
What got me was how anime like but genuine the caracters looked. Like not even listening to dialogue yet, everyone feels like a real life person
26:43 SMT fans were hovering over the dislike button like 👀😂😂
You mean 0:49
That’s me
Most SMT players: Oof, Hard mode is actually... HARD!
Me playing on Safety: Haha, demons die with one hit go brrrrrrrrrrr
This was a great feeling seeing afro experience the surprise sweep I need more of this
SMT 4 may look a little dated but it is absolutely worth playing
until you try to get your first demon.....
@@iammyworstenemy3807 Naraku pains
Heavily agree. I played it and 4Apocalypse earlier this year for the first time, and dated looks be damned, I still love both games

"I don't think we can die in the tutorial"
**laughs in SMT3**
Man, seeing Metroid and SMT finally getting some love now adays feels sweet af
shame I have yet to hear/see vids without referencing P5 as expected but Afro content is Hella welcome regardless! Lets go!
You gotta understand SMT3 was PS2 and SMT 4 was a DS which some people didnt get or play. Also the monsters are recognizable from Persona games so there is a generational gap. Persona 5 is the best reference bc that really put Atlus up there you know. I just discovered these games bc of p4g on steam. I was in the military the past 15 years, not much time for games but I feel you with the persona comparison I just love jrpgs
@@Scantronacon smt 4 and 4 apocalypse were on the 3DS not the DS
I went all in on Vitality since everything in hard mode hits freakin hard. Thankfully I can act as the tank for my demons who will be doing the damage.
Oh man, you're a brave guy for playing a mainline SMT game on hard on your first try.
I like how he says that he doesn't like games that look dated, meanwhile n64 in the background of the intro.
One doesn’t experience self-transcendence, the illusion of self only dissipates🎈
I'd love a full series of this
Man got through the first 20 minutes of gameplay and tapped out 😥
Nah that KH quote threw me off. I'm just so mad I have to get a switch now just for this game and Mario Golf 😩
My boy is playing shin megami tensei let's go low key recommend you try out dragon quest 11
The dq series really needs more recognition
Yes super boost this!
DQ11 is a masterpiece
I enjoyed DQ 11. I also have 9, though I still need to play it.
@@carlyl2032 I’ve been meaning to play 5 cuz I hear that’s the best one. I downloaded it on my phone but I just haven’t had the time
This was great! Please play more of it, Afro 👍
Afro: Hold on my dude pretty like a girl
Me: and he got fight stories to tell
Thanks for not making any Persona comparisons, it makes this video so much more enjoyable not having to hear Persona references every 2 seconds.
Afro need to live stream this like persona 5 came out the first time!
I'm only thirty seconds into this video and holy fuck I love you. Literally the most open minded persona fan I've ever seen. Thank you.
Watching him switch targets repeatedly in the slime fight was definitely the most confusing thing I've witnessed.
The moment AfroSenju chose the Hard difficulty, the real SMT fans all smiled. Exceptional challenge is putting it lightly my friend~
My pants fell when I sow him play it in hard. There’s no way you’re going to keep it on that difficulty, I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT!
He probably gonna drop the game soon anyway lol
He got sponsored so this video was obligated, he might not keep playing it
@@neonblackbeast7243 like he does with every game lmao
The audio cuts out at 17:01 until 17:12
Ok I thought I was bugging out
Afro gonna need to brush up on his occult studies, glad you’re playing this one.
There's a tunnel like that close to the Ikebukuro station. Now I'm a short guy like 5'5 so I was fine (the top of that tunnel underpass was like maybe 1 head above me) but my friend is like 6'8 and he couldn't stand up straight in that underpass.
i freaking love the music in this game. Sooooooooo good!
It’s your first SMT game and you went in hard?! That’s brave of you! 😂
I'm sold. The interactions between you and the demons worth the price tag🤣
Nice to see there are plenty of Persona fans eager to enjoy SMT for what it is, rather than what it isn't. Both SMT and its spin-offs have their own appeals, so that was never an issue with me.
22:51 Afro unintentionally makes a great case for universal health care 😂😂
I enjoyed this episode but I figure he’s not gonna continue playing, but either way I’m glad he at least gave the game a chance which is good enough for me
SMT in general have a very 80s japanese horror vibe.
In most SMT you get multiple ending Chaos, Order, & Neutral just like siding with Angels, Demon, or Others
Haven't played since Nocturne as a teen, Was instant hype seeing you playing this series
2:14 He isnt gonna last 5 minutes in there.
So glad to finally see one of my favorite youtubers touch this series. Makes me feel whole.
Now, i kinda want to see a series of this lmao..
Same here
"im pretty sure you cant die in tutorial"
me having traumatic flashbacks of nocturne and smt iv: oh well
Imo smt 4 looks really good, and I had so much fun with it. That was my introduction into the franchise, then persona 5 came out 2 years later, I really love that game too. I've played about 2 hours of smt 5, I found the beginning of smt 4 more intriguing and it hooked me faster compared to 5 but I'm liking it so far. It will take a lot for me to enjoy it more than 4 though. I hope it surprises me!
As someone who found this through Persona 5 and playing it currently I actually enjoy it a bit more gameplay wise. I like walking around and confronting them and stuff it’s a really cool world
I would like Afro to keep playing this game until he beats it… aka a Walkthrough 👍🏼!
I"VE JUST BEEN HAVING THESE WEIRD THOUGHTS LATELY!
That's literally what I was thinking when I heard that line I was like goddamnit Atlus, loved you since DeSu 2 Record Breaker but come on now.
