    A video for top reads of the year (so far) four times a year would be awesome! March was a very productive month for you, Petrik (no surprise!). I am incredibly honored that The Way of Edan was part of it!

    Happy to hear that March was such a success (aside from WoT, but we'll just pretend that didn't happen, lol). Your review of The Will of the Many got me soooo excited, I literally can't wait to dive in! And I totally agree with everything you said about The Way of Edan, I am so super eager to see what Philip has in store for us in the sequels!!
    My favourite reads of the month were 3 non-fiction books by Caitlin Doughty, which are all about her experience working in the death industry. I never knew death could be so entertaining, those books are amazing hahah. And as for fiction, I found new favourites in A Quiet Vengeance by Tim Hardie, The Memory of Souls by Jenn Lyons (never been happier to have given a series a second chance, I am loving it this time around!) and a prequel novella called Pale Night, Red Field by Joseph John Lee!
    Great wrap-up Petrik! 🥰

      Thank you so much, Esmay! It was kinda expected of WoT to fail... I hope you'll love The Will of the Many as much as I did! And wow, quite surprised to hear you end up enjoying A Chorus of Dragons by Jenn Lyons more. That's really the beauty of a second chance and reading a book at the right time. We have to recognize that more! :)

    I have started a new job in a new city, so this month has been the worst reading month I've ever had. Yesterday before going to sleep, I accidently found my Kindle which I hadn't seen for a month. Seeing it really hit me hard because of how less I miss it due to work and I am scared that I will stop reading altogether. I will try to make time for reading this month.

    • @PetrikLeo
      @PetrikLeo  Рік тому

      Argh, that sucks. But don't be scared. I think a new job in a new city just means you will need to take some time to adjust to a new schedule. I strongly believe once you're a reader, nothing can take you away from it. Even if you take a break from it for months of years, you will get back to it. :)

    A Prelude to Ashes is a super fun fast paced read! I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

    If you make the videos, I'll watch them!
    My March Wrap-Up:
    - 4/5 - Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett (a bit tropey/predictable, but I really liked it)
    - 1/5 - Jonathon Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (DNF a few pages in; poor writing style, poor premise, poor beginning scene)
    - 4/5 - The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne (fantastic Action-Fantasy that I really liked, but with some repetition in plotlines)
    - 2.5/5 - Babel by R.F. Kuang (It was okay if you don't mind lessons in word history and footnotes)
    - 2/5 - Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan (It was okay, but very anti-climactic plotlines and some questionable treatment of female characters)
    - 5/5 - The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King (Awesome characters and themes in this second installment of the Gunslinger series - some minor gratuitous parts)
    - 4/5 - The Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson (I really liked it, but some plotlines/promises closed in an unsatisfying way - I expected more with the Malwish and the leader of the Set)
    - 5/5 - The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang (Probably the best book I'll read this year. Excellent characters and character work, well-developed themes, and a beautiful mountain setting. The climax is near the middle, so expect a conclusion longer than usual.)
    Overall, a lot of highs and lows for me this month. The Sword of Kaigen was a standout! If this book is in your TBR, then give it a try. Thanks for recommending this one, Petrik!

      Man. I can't disagree more about promise of blood. I'm about a third of the way through the autumn republic and this series keeps getting better. I urge you to continue on

      POSSIBLE VAGUE SPOILERS BELOW
      @@seanhalpin87 I'm glad you enjoyed it, and that it gets better, but it will be a long while before I read anything else by McClellan. There are so many other writers and books I haven't read yet.
      What I mean by anti-climactic: there were 6 different instances in Promise of Blood (that I noticed) where the 3 protagonists just let their (sometimes captive) baddies get away. All that hunting/fighting to capture them? Pointless. And these baddies aren't escaping with magic, cunning and guile, I mean they just get up and walk away, often with the protagonist watching them leave.
      I didn't notice how bad this was at first, but when I started writing my plot review on Goodreads, and really thinking about the plotlines, it became shockingly clear how unsatisfied I was with this overused escape routine.

    Lol I told you man book 7 was terrible! I couldn't finish book 8 that's where I quit. I hope you can power through it, but I couldn't lol. Also in regard to your question instead of doing multiple top ten books of the year so far videos I think it might be better to do top 10 or top 5 of the books released in(or I read in) the last three months. That way the top ten of the year list would still feel rly special and you wouldn't just be talking about the same books over and over. Let's say you read the top 7 of the year in the January then all the videos would just be you listing off the same books lol. Regardless whatever you decide to do I'm sure id love the videos. You have a great way of talking about books and getting people excited for them without spoiling anything. It really is impressive and why you're my favorite booktuber.

    Good luck with the remainder of the WoT slog, They all suffer from the same pacing issues and are overstuffed. However, they are a bit shorter in length. I will say that Winter's Heart is a small bright spot. I still consider book 11 (Knife of Dreams) middling, but at least it concludes plot threads that went on for several books. I'm finally up to the Sanderson written ones and I may get to The Gathering Storm in April. I'm not sure I'm in the mood for another WoT book this month and may push it out to May. My goal is still to finish the series this year.
    My favorite book/biggest surprise in March was A Shadow in Summer. I gave it 4.5/5, but it felt fresh and original, even though it was published in 2006. Definitely continuing the next book the series this month.

    Y'know, it might be best if you read a summary of the Wheel of Time 8-10 instead of the actual books. Or just Rand's, Perrin's, Aviendha's and Elayne's chapters of 8, Rand, Mat(skip the middle chapters of Mat's) and Min's chapters of 9 and a summary of 10 plus the epilogue. That'd make things a helluva lot easier. Don't send yourself into a reading slump by trying to slog through stuff you obviously dislike. You won't be missing much by not reading most of 8-10, that I can say with certainty. The series picks up with 11 and of course Sando's work is top notch as always.

    • @PetrikLeo
      @PetrikLeo  Рік тому +1

      If it reaches a point where I really can't do it anymore, I think I will actually read detailed summaries of book 8-10 instead of reading them. This was torturous already. I definitely will not send myself to a reading slump because of Wheel of Time!

      @@PetrikLeo BTW how are you liking the Frugal Wizard? I felt that it wasn't as good as Tress but is a solid book overall. The MC in particular is very compelling. Though the book would've benefited from being longer and slowing down the second half to have more focus on the side characters, IMO.

      @@historymax5479 I just finished Frugal Wizard yesterday, and I guess... I liked it? But definitely not a favorite of mine. One of Sanderson's weakest book, imo, for the reasons you mentioned. I liked the 2nd half much more but the supporting characters are so underdeveloped.

My favorite book this month and one of my favorites of the year so far is Godkiller. It honestly has taken me a while to read any of the books in the Wheel of Time and i've only read 2 of them, but had a easier time with the second one, since I moved to audio. I also hated the Egwene and Aes Sedai stuff in Crown of Swords, and I think there was much less of that in bk 8. My Wheel of Time slog was limited to books 7 and 10, so it’s definitely not unanimous that bks 8-9 are also part of the slog, since at least I had a good time with those. So there might be hope yet!

Not even rereading a favorite, "Black Sun" could get me out of that feeling. Because of my mood I don't think I appreciated enough "Down" by Octavia E. Butler, but I'll continue with "Lilith's Brood" for sure. My disappointment was with one of my most anticipated short story for the year (I even preordered a quite expensive physical copy) "The Lies of the Ajungo". We seem to have the same likes and dislikes when it comes to WoT, so I just wanted to give you a warning and some hope for the next book. I just finished Path of Daggers last week, and the first part of the book is definitely a slog. A lot of the female characters pov. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The last half of the book is mostly about Rand, and I flew through it. It actually made me want to start the next book right away, but I'm trying to pace myself so I don't get burned out on the series. Good luck when you get to it!

      The WoT suffers a similar issue as Dune by lowering bars for hyped-up groups. Aes Sedai who governed and directed entire kingdoms for over 2,000 years suddenly behave as if they are clueless high school girls. Instead of creating overwhelmingly deceitful and cunning villains, RJ resorted to lowering the bars by "let's make AS stupid". Aes Sedai concept was so interesting in beginning just fizzled...

    I just started book 3 of WoT, and even though this series has been great so far, I've also heard that it's pretty dated in some aspects. I liked book 2 a lot, but I noticed that Jordan started writing all the female characters to just fall in love with Rand, which was incredibly cringe to me. Hearing from you that it seems to get even worse by book 7 is honestly disheartening. The romance scenes in these books are honestly difficult for me to read because I think they're terrible lol. 😅
    Hopefully I like books 3-6! I've heard great things about those books.

      Do not expect great things in the romance department. They are some of the worst I've ever read. Characters fall in and out of love with no feelings attached whatsoever, it's crazy. Great Hunt was actually my favorite until I read book 5 and 6. Book 7 was really mixed baggage, though! xD

Almost nothing of importance to the rest of the story happens that I remember. The last Jordan and then the Sanderson books improve but the whole series just felt bloated to me.I agree with your take on the Aes Sendai. Crown of Swords isn't the start of "The Slog" book 1 is! Wheel of Time is the worst book series ever, I wish Bradon had rewritten the whole thing or at the very least edited it down and cut out the boring to a trilogy! I bailed half way through book 7 when the third character was raped, wasn't fun to read about and I was already bored so making me angry wasn't a great way to take it! Life is too short to waste on terrible literature, I've given up on the goal of reading Brandon's contribution, it's nearly 2 good books of content spread over 7, total waste of time and like you said "A good ending doesn't make a good book"! To anyone else I would say, just watch a synopsis video or read the wiki then read Brandon's books.

    I agree 100% on your comment regarding Aes Sedai. I actually extend that to some of the non-Aes Sedai as well (like Faile, Berelain, Morgase, etc.) All of the females in this series (with a few exceptions like Min and Birgitte) all feel like they have the same 5 personality traits and the only difference is where they put their skill points among those five personality traits lol. Judgmental, hypocritical, brow-beating, manipulative, and stubborn. The male characters aren't without faults either obviously, but many of the women really blend together cause they are all... the same lol. They are all caricatures of how overbearing wives in TV sitcoms used to be written. I think the reason it frustrates me is that the series is great in so many ways, that having just such a bad characterization of an entire gender just seems like a dumb, easily avoidable problem for Robert Jordan lol. The series would have been so much better if that had been fixed.

    • @PetrikLeo
      @PetrikLeo  Рік тому

      I completely agree with you, Justin! Caricatures are exactly the word I'm looking for to describe the Aes Sedai. They just did not feel genuine as a character or person to me. Don't even get me started on how awful the romance is. The Wheel of Time is a great series with a lot of glaring flaws! And I feel these flaws could've been easily fixed with a better editor, especially now. Oh well, the wheel weaves as the wheel wills. xD

      @@PetrikLeo Definitely! I will say though, as someone who pretty much agrees with you on virtually every issue you bring up, it's definitely worth it to finish the series. I think if you recognize the problem with the characters and just accept it, it becomes a little easier to ignore. I am a big "character reader" which made this series a little tough at the beginning when I could not care less about most of the characters (literally for probably the first 11 books, I would not have cared much if any of the main characters had died, which is crazy). But that gets partially corrected when Sanderson takes over, in my opinion. And there are awesome plot points throughout the series that help offset it some. Plus A Memory of Light is so good, it helps offset a ton of the more frustrating parts. Love the videos, keep it up!
