I feel a deep connection with this band. Was there at the beginning, when shot of love was in heavy rotation on Houston stations. I learned drop d tuning from these guys. There's a connection that is shared by the audience. Just as powerful as Rush. Trailblazers like Cream and Triumph. Vocals like the Beatles. Enormous talent.
Such a classic epic. I've always been disappointed that they do not choose to play it more often. Luckily, I have seen they perform it once or twice and rocked my ass off!
Is it going to take this band perishing in a plane crash to make the world wake up and realize they're the best thing since the Beatles? sheesh... Just incredible...
+fretworx Your comment made me laugh and cry at the same time. This band is truly a gift to the people that know Kings X. Just saw them at the Food Truck and Rock Festival in Clark, N.J. They are just the best. They command respect and they sure as hell get it from me.
you are unfortunately absolutely right.....that's why people should trash this so called music of today and start listening to real music made by real people playing real instruments.....then we wouldn't have to wait for a tragedy to occur in order to realize how great a band is...

Saw King’s X open for Cheep Trick at the Convocation Center on the ASU Campus in Jonesboro, AR in 1988. Cheep Trick was supporting their single “The Flame” and I only saw the CD of King’s X “Out of The Silent Planet” at my local ALCO in passing. King’s X absolutely blew me away and I’ve been a fan ever since. Needless to say I bought that CD from ALCO the next day. I knew music was changing and that KX would pave the way, and they did. They played their entire album and I never sat down. I’ll never forget that night. Thank you- Doug, Ty & Jerry.
Remember the first time I heard this track. I'd read about them in a guitar mag and thought I'd check it out. Gretchen had not long been out and this song blew me the hell away with all that massive drop D and 12 string bass goodness. Ty's tone is still one the greatest you'll hear. Oh and those wonderful harmonies. Instantly hooked I was and it all still sounds as good 20+ years later as it did back then. They are such a great band it's hard to put into words and to boot top fellas as well.
In 1983 when other kids were just beginning to shed their Billy Squire and their Duran Duran was the heaviest rotation me and not too many other people were at home with headphones on listening to Kings X thinking we were hearing the next Beatles ! They had it ALLL !
Found out about King's X from an interview with Vernon Reid from Living Colour in Rolling Stone magazine. I think it was after LC's first album. He was asked what he was listening to and he mentioned "Gretchen goes to Nebraska" by King's X and a few other albums. I went out got it and was blown away...
this is the best song ever written, by the best band ever, from the greatest album ever made! King's X-Grechen goes to Nebraska...The must have album of all freakin' time!
I met the band very recently listening to KXM, with Georg Lynch, Ray Luzier and Dug Pinnick, in the end it is a sensational work. Now King's X is undoubtedly one of the most incredible bands I've ever heard, the spontaneous fusion of Beatles and Trapeze, a sabbatical atmosphere. The band is powerful with only three members a perfect symphony, I stopped to listen to all the albums, they are masterpieces of Rock. I'm already an unconditional fan. King's X is awesome.
WOW!! never thought I'd find KX do this live. Thanks for the upload man. what a song.. wat a band...till today I'm still amazed at how they are able to play complicated songs and still be able to sing in harmony at the same time. Long live the KX
One of my bands opened for em a long time ago in Minneapolis. Even as a drummer, I felt privileged to sit right in front of Ty's rig in awe, thinking, "There it is, man.. this is what he uses to get those killer tones."
King's X , Gretchen goes to Nebraska one of the best albums of the 90's. You just get lost in the melodies and heavy metal guitar riffs. Spot on Live performance!
First thing I noticed. It's not easy to start a note on an ahh without sliding into it and then hold the note without faltering, especially on the highest note of that harmony.
I saw kings x twice ......they did not disappoint ......they were probably the best live band I've ever seen....great playing and those beatlesque harmonies were right on the money....is perfect good i daresay......yes it was....
They are on my top 5 list in my life how awesome of a band killer vocals tight arrangements i got hipped to them back in the day "Over my Head" i have mostly all there stuff I hope Doug will be at Namm 2017 I'll be hanging out with him.....Kings X... for ever!
Wow Thanks! I didn't know that. I always considered them a Christian band in the early years when I was into them.so that makes sense! Though I think they grew much more accepting and inclusive later, unlike most American Christians. I'll check out that book!
Kids, do you hear how the vocals do not sound "perfect"? That is called playing and singing LIVE. I know it might sound a little (very little) different than the album but this is what one of most talented (and shamefully underrated) bands sounds like. PERFECT (flaws and all)!
I'll never forget the night a room mate of mine came home with a smirk on his face and said dude I got something you need to hear, he threw the "Gretchen" cassette in my stereo, this being the first song as I sat speechless listening knowing "whoever this is just changed my life" it had a real "Beatles, Tomorrow Never Knows" kinda vibe and I was so into what I was hearing, he wouldn't tell me who it was cuz he knew I'd recognize the next song, "Over My Head" was getting played on MTV and we were first introduced to the trio of great musicians known as Kings X!
This is a great and rare video. They seldom played Out of the Silent Planet live. I’ve seen them dozens of times since the late 80’s and only heard them play this twice.
I know right? I never understood why this was played so infrequently. In fact, much of this album (arguably their watershed) seems to get passed over (and over) year after year on their setlists? Do they not like the songs? Are they sick to death of playing them? Is it a problem with the lyrical material? 13 shows since '98 and I've only heard them play it once.
I just love these freakin' guys. Can't say enough good things about them in my book. Best trio ever. (Yes, I love Rush talso, but these guys all sing great too!)
This Track still stands as the reigning King of My Favourite of all of Kings X Material. It's the first track I heard of theirs in '89 when I was introduced to the wonderful world of Gretchen. I wish I could see them play this track Live!!! ... B)X
I´m quite new into King's X. This is one my favorite tracks so far. Love the different melodies during the verses. GGTN is a magnificent album. Seems as if I´m always late with good stuff....
I have seen them several times. They are always great! If I have any complaints it would only be that in the smaller venues the vocals are sometimes drowned out by the instruments. I mention this only because each of them have a wonderful voice that is prominently on display whether as they are here or in their solo work. Just an incredible band with a wonderful catalog of work.
Absolutely the most underrated band in the business. They are all three extremely gifted in playing their instruments and singing incredibly. Their live performances are sometimes better than the recorded versions. I still am amazed when I see them live. if you've never had the chance to catch KingsX live I highly recommend you do so. You won't regret it!!

I cannot begin to describe what this band has meant to me over the last 25 or so years
- yep....never been the same since I first listen to the debut cd. Every Kings X cd is worth the owning.
Absolutely! All the way back to Out Of The Silent Planet!
Grateful Ape my favorite band. Living in Houston I’ve seen them every show they’ve played here since 1988
You don't have to explain anything. .. at least not to me. I feel the same way about 'em!
My sentiments exactly! They carried me through a lot of tough times! And a lot of great times too!
Holy cow. I have never heard this song and only know like one of their songs. This is fire!
Just saw them last weekend.. they still rock as hard as ever.
I usually cut off people who make fun of King's X. King's X is up there with the magic of the Beatles and Pantera. Criminally Underrated
please, no one makes fun of King's X

I would completely lose my mind if I heard them do this song live! Thanks for sharing. Unbelievable how great they sound
Three instruments, three voices - that is a six piece band! Freak'n thick, haunting sound. One of my favorite songs, and bands ever!
She spoke to me....
Is it going to take this band perishing in a plane crash to make the world wake up and realize they're the best thing since the Beatles? sheesh... Just incredible...
fretworx The second coming of the Beatles. King's X are jaw dropping amazing!

well, I found the dipshit that doesn't know anything.

Even to those of us who've known and loved this band forever, this performance of this song is just jaw-dropping amazing. Thanks much for posting!
...and HAMER! What an incredible-sounding instrument as expertly played by Dug.
moparedtn Right on dude! I've seen them at least 20 times and this is spot on! Long live Gretchen =0)
This is what I love - bands who just get up and do it! No fancy stage sets, no stupid costumes.
If it ain't about the music, then it ain't nothin'
In all fairness they did have costumes in the beginning. Remember the epaulettes? Lol

"Father speaks, Son becomes the story." What an awesome line.
Thanks so much for sharing this video. Man how I love this song!
Ty and Dug's tones are monstrous
Everything about their sound is monstrous. One of the best rock trios ever.
I Know! It's like a metal 'symphony'!
I saw in Memphis kingsx with Axdc loud and dam good.
Holy fck! Are you Kidding me!?! Do you think you will Ever find a more Beautiful recording of a Live hard rock band?!? ..I Fkn' Doubt it!

This song is the essence of King's X, IMO. Just so original, so powerful, dynamic, intense and slightly otherworldly. Incredible performance!

I would love for them to pull off another album like this.. Gretchen and Out of the Silent Planet are two of my favs, though I love them all!
They are finishing their newest album right now in Pasadena CA.
This is the heaviest live track on UA-cam or anywhere else. "Simply" Amazing.

We could never get this song down vocally. This sounds unbelievable!!
And just when you think it can't possibly get any better, 2:50 happens, and you just crumble inside. This is KX live.
Its so spiritual ...left me with tears

Freakin awesome!
Just saw them at HOB in Houston .....showed me once again that they are a great live band...thanks for uploading this dood :)
Such an incredible live band - 3 masters in one band! Hate they never got their just due but thrilled they’re still kicking!
This is a truly great song.
WOW! I think this is the only King's X song I have never seen live. Amazing vocals as always....
greatest band ever...so musical, such interesting and unique songwriting...and all great guys....
