    Over here, winter can get terribly cold, (-40C) so the only way to have a reliable water source is to have heated water bowls. It's an investment ($50 a bowl) but has been amazing for us this far! We just have to keep an eye on the water when it gets colder than -20C just because there are limitations to those bowls compared to arctic cold temps, but they make life easier 97% of the winter for sure!

    If u cut a hole in the wire your feed container can sit on the outside so you can feed without opening the cage

    We too build our own nesting boxes amd the best designs we could find had 1/4" mesh bottoms and a lip on the front as a kit squeegee lip on the top of the front to help keep them inside the nesting box. Awesome job!

    You should put the box for the mamas at 27 -28 day because they would probably eat it or use it as a litter

    • @thestonehearthfarmhouse
      @thestonehearthfarmhouse  Рік тому +3

      They don't use it as litter. And I make sure they have plenty of hay everyday. Day 25 works for me.

    How did you get your rabbits to be so gentle and calm. If I stuck my hand in the cage when they are mating I would probably get bit. I struggle with them scratching me when I try and move them or handle them. I interacted with them a lot when they were small but still they are difficult. Maybe it is the breed. Mine are mixed breeds except for 1 and she is very shy. I'm impressed with the way you take care of your rabbits.

      Thank you! The silver Fox breed is very docile and some shy. I think it’s just the breed. I have had Rex rabbits in the past that have not been very nice.

    • @thestonehearthfarmhouse
      @thestonehearthfarmhouse  Рік тому +2

      Sure, when it gets nicer out I will mention it. It's not much, just barrels that collect water from the roof when it rains. :)

    • @julieb2605
      @julieb2605 Рік тому +1

      @rabbitathomestead I was wondering if the barrels just have a filter and collect directly into barrel or connected to down spouts from the roof. Thank you!

    • @thestonehearthfarmhouse
      @thestonehearthfarmhouse  Рік тому +2

      @@julieb2605 no filter. We have the barrels positioned to collect water from two creases in our roof. A lot of water drains off the roof in those spots. I use the water for gardening and I give it to my rabbits. When I give it to the rabbits, I put apple cider vinegar in their water with it.

      That wires is made specifically for rabbits. It's the best and safest thing for them. It certainly does not hurt their feet.

    • @thestonehearthfarmhouse
      @thestonehearthfarmhouse  Рік тому +4

      When you breed rabbits you are looking for what they call a "fall off". It's when the buck successfully breeds with the doe and falls off dramatically. I have videos that show what I'm talking about. 🐇

    What did people feed rabbits before pellets and corporations existed? Surely it’s simple.

    • @rondenniel2894
      @rondenniel2894 4 місяці тому

      It is simple. Just feed from pellets let's you butcher a month sooner and gives animals more fat witch is what the femal needs for raising young. They eat like a horse in nature. Anything you feed to your horse you can feed to a rabbit. The main difference is most not have land to grow hay grains and such.

    • @ShinkaVitam
      @ShinkaVitam 2 місяці тому

      You can most certainly supplement most of a rabbit's diet with foraging. However, it'll likely result in lower weights, slower growth, and higher mortality due to unbalanced nutrition and risk of disease from wild rabbits. With meat rabbits, the goal is to get to slaughter weight quickly, and the rabbit food companies have streamlined that process quite nicely.
      Rabbits are absolutely a great meat animal to have in a tough spot, though!

    Parents and children share more common DNA than siblings. Breeding siblings is totally ok to enhance certain desirable traits.

    • @bugs825
      @bugs825 7 місяців тому

      Yes but it highlights the negative just as much. This is where culling and selective breeding are key. Most fail because they emotionally can cull and are overrun.
