John Goldsby Trio - Devil May Care | WDR BIG BAND

John Goldsby (bass), Billy Test (piano) and Hans Dekker (drums) play "Devil May Care", a composition by Bob Dorough & Terrell Kirk in an arrangement by Billy Test. Recorded as part of the concert series "WDR Big Band Small Groups" on Feb. 20, 2021 at the WDR Funkhaus.
The WDR BIG BAND is often referred to as the "band of soloists", because each member can also convince as a soloist and also in a small group. This is one of the reasons why the new series "WDR Big Band Small Groups" was recently launched, where the musicians can present themselves in different constellations. In the summer of 2020, bassist John Goldsby assembled a trio with Hans Dekker (drums) and Billy Test (piano) that is well-rehearsed - after all, they work together (almost) every day in an orchestral context. The result is the CD "Segment" (release: February 16, 2021), where the busy rhythm section captures the wonderful, wild pulse of the jazz tradition while adding innovative accents of color, light and groove to it.

Wow! A great sense of driving force, so well balanced, Billy like McCoy Tyner ++, Hans spot-on fine, and John so fluid with that great arco solo (by the way do you ever sing while using the bow? Many years ago I was one of the backing vocalists with Michael Garrick, Norma Winstone and the Hot Club de Paris bassist Coleridge Goode, who used to do just that, eg on The Heart is a Lotus).
