#BlackMagicCraft #Episode089
In this episode I sculpt a serious threat for the table. This is how you can take scrap XPS foam, utility knife, and some hot glue to create a massive earth elemental or stone golem miniature.

I always end up getting a bunch of stuff from the clearance section there so I will use that link the next time. So great they are supporting your channel!
Cool build. I would have left the eye holes open and placed some cheap stones/gems in them.
You should try war machine minis there cool looking and fun to paint (use super glue to assemble)
Add crystals on the back and it'll look even cooler
crystals + large gold glitter + various magic items = An enchanted Treasure golem, laid as a last bastion of defense for the treasure. comes in copper, silver, electrum, gold, platinum and gemstone variants.
@@ninetails6218 If able add a small LED light to the crystals so they glow and give off a magical aura, maybe a flicker light in its chest with some red to give off a heartbeat...
There should be a movement to call oversized monster minis “Biggies”
Biggiatures
Mini chungies (chungus)? 😂
2 years later and I cannot accept that this comment has not become a parole
@@Diortelon I was GOING to say this!
Maxis.
One can get so much mileage out of your "slice, twist" technique with the knife to get incredible looking stone. I can't imagine ever bothering with wet work like clay or casting when you can do this and get instant results.
Mostly I just hate waiting for things like clay to dry
So many alternates could be made like this Rock,Lava, Water, Fire,Ice and Earth spring to mind I'm sure there's even more you could think up. Came out looking like a high dollar large boss monster.
I could so see this thing hugging up against a cliff blending in. As soon as the characters get close by and revealing this thing will make their jaws drop in amazement and terror. Awesome build man!👍🔥
This is a great way to incorporate Miniatures into your terrain channel. I'm really digging this episode. He rocks.
Ha
badum tsss
We were at the keep, everybody had matching cowls; somebody climbed up to the clock, and there they saw a rock. But it wasn't a rock... it was a Rock Monster!
For some reason in my head I read that as "But it wasn't a rock... It was a Iraq Lobster!"
If you want it to have even more balance, make it have on huge arm that rests on the ground.
Just what I needed, my players will love seeing it but their characters will not. 😈
Ha! Good way to put it
A wild thought hit me: that think would look really awesome with some heavy rings embedded in its arms and broken chains hanging from them. I think anyway.
That would be cool as hell as a lava monster. base it in bright yellow and dry brush red orange and black over it all
You could get away with doing the build exactly the same, just need a different paintjob
Cthulhus Dream Funny I was thinking the exact opposite, the raw foam looked like some snow/ice monster and I kept thinking how it's been a wile since my players have been stuck in a blizzard :) hmmm...
Hell yes! You could make all sorts of versions of this. Imagine a earth elemental with crystals, or a ice elemental..
There are even glow-in-the-dark paints you could use for some kind of magical construct. So many possibilities!
Fizzlefuse ouuuu little glow in the dark mishrooms!! ♡.♡ why am I so excited by this? I imagine a show called pimp my golem and the host is his little bad ass gnome... okayyy time for dodo.
I would base it in black
I plan to make one of these that looks just like a rock feature and have the players battle around it. Then, near the end of the battle, when they think they're done, I'll stand it up and the fight will continue.
That sounds really cool
This is one of my favorite builds and one of my favorite videos! I've watched it numerous times and finally built a Golem of my own! (I wish I could give it more than just one like) Now I'm just waiting for the Mod Podge/black paint to dry so I can add sand and start painting! My son-in-law is the DM and I think he'll flip over this! Thanks, Jeremy!
The bit about covering gaps with moss and glue reminds me of Bob Ross - Same sort of wholesome helpfulness in these videos. Love it.
12:32 most epic fight scene I've ever seen
the touch of the final scene with the elemental in action is the best! :D
That looks absolutely fantastic. Truly inspired piece
This is an amazing build. Beats anything i can do on my 3d printer!
Please make more of these amazing large scale creatures!
Looks amazing as always! Just recently got into miniatures and everything D&D. Love your channel and everything you’ve done, thank you for all your hard work making and filming everything!
I am new to crafting minis. This was the first boss monster I have made. Me, my wife and my 6 year old girl had so much fun with this creature in our last game. Thank you man!
I would love to see more build like this too. Your houses and stuff are amazing, but I never would of thought of doing this.
Cool I was in a game and our GM did domething similar using expanding foam chunks. Made an earth titan than wrecked like two cities before we managed to wish it away lol.
That turned out really nice! Excellent project for a boss guardian. I will have to take a look at that minwax spray and try it out.
Yea I like it on most stuff, but I wouldn't recommend on on actual minis as it can slightly yellow over time. With terrain (or rock monster) that's not really a huge issue.
Good to know!
Awesome build! I love it!!!!
MY NEW FAVORITE CHANNEL
That is awesome! Next project selected 👍🏿
I love this build. I've got to do this one in multiples.
This is so awesome I found some XP’s foam and made my own version. Still got to add the sand and smaller rocks, but I am dead chuffed. You inspired me to build one. Cheers 👏👏👏👏👏
Nice
THANK YOU so much for such a fantastic, easy to follow and build-yourself tutorial video. I have wanted to make something like this for a long time, just for fun, but didn't think to use foam, thinking wire and milliput would have to do instead. This is something I can do all day now, making a "small" army of these creatures, from all the pieces of foam I have left after building terrain. I already have ideas for both "male" & "female" figures, which are making me laugh before I even get started.
I've subscribed to your channel now, as you are so inspiring, and I'm learning some great new tips after over 40 years of model making :-)
Again, thank you for such a fun and easy to build-yourself tutorial.
Paul
I agree lava or even an ice golem. Totally cool. Now how would you do a chain golem?
Having trained multiple people on how to use a kitchen knife, seeing you cut towards yourself with the utility knife brought back some old school stress.
Dude i play 40k so my models are already basically built but my god this is one of the coolest things ive ever seen and i wanna build one just for a diorama. Fantastic job man
Amazing build as always!
Great idea thank you for the inspiration! I just finished my earth elemental I think first time is a success
After watching your channel for almost two years I’m finally gonna make something lol. I’m going back to this video and it will be my order build ever. I’m excited
Really cool
THAT Is a good idea! Thanks!
I always need a Ton of Elementals in different sizes, so... HELPFUL!
He looks awesome, reminds me of the rock monster from 'Galaxy Quest'...👾😎😊
Very cool! Looks like it is bigger than a 2"x2" base for the large creature.
Well done buddy. Great build!
This is awesome! I love buying miniatures but there’s nothing better than making things myself especially when they look as cool as this!
I may have to try this out. I made a Roper the other week that I was quite pleased with
That was sweet! Great build!!!!
Love it! Also make a stand-alone boulder that looks, more or less, like the top of the elemental. When the PCs get close to it, replace the boulder with the elemental!
Realy cool build! Thanks for inspiring me.
You're stuff is helpful and good. Superlike
That is awesome!
OMG this is a freaking awesome build. Going to have to make one for my future God of War series.
Thanks man!
Awesome, simply awesome!
Beautifully badass!
Awesome build!
Cant wait to try building this one.
This is bad ass!... another inspired piece for me to do!
Great result!
I had an idea today to make something like this, but then cut it in half in such a way that you can put part of it in the terrain as a piece of scatter terrain. Then when it rises from the ground you pull out the other piece and reconnect them.
Great build!
Gret build! I'm getting 2 of those!
Awesome vid!
this is a great base idea for a lot of chunky bad guys. Lava monster, giant snow monster a la Frozen, and of course a Rock Monstaaaaaa
I always appreciate your videos, but this is extra marvellous! And, I'll probably copy the idea :P
Do it!
Lol love the little play video near the end. I busted laughing after narrating it.
Perfect
This is sick, I have so many ideas
That looks cool 😎
Hey, I just watched the video. Great build, you actually inspired me to build 2 golems, one made the way you made it, the other one made by picking the shape apart with my fingers, and re-glueing the little cuttings back on, making him look like a mound of tiny boulders. But one thing at the end of the video caught my eye: you have an amazing set of trees, which seems to be the only craft I can't figure out how to make. can you show us how you made your trees?
Sorry to say those big nice trees were purchased from woodland scenics.....BUT next episode I'm actually making some pine trees.
That rocks!!
Put a black mineral deposit off its back and See if anyone in your group get the reference to breath of the Wild.
Awesome!
Watching you play with your minis like action figures is so damn wholesome. ☺️💜
Really cool.
How did i mis this video? It dropped 2 day's after my birthday?! damn, wel i have a lot of scraps so i got to work today on building this one, and thank you cthuhlus dream for the inspiration of turning this into a lava beast. I'm painting mine to be a fire elemental :-). Thanks to you both!!
ah, the classic 360 dagger dive DDT at the end. Gotta love those Fighter Maneuvers. lmao!!
Whats your black wash consist of? Looks amazing with the spray application..
Love your channel
You should male some custom treefolk! That would be intense!
Thks for all the good tips
Looks so awesome! The green arena at the end, how did you do that and get it so nice and also tough looking?
XPS foam board. Painted, then flocked with various woodland scenics flocking (check my site for links). Several coats of really watered down glue to seal it.
gonna use the black primer and a bit of higlight for an obsidian golem.
Wouldn't it be kinda awesome to see something like this incorporate broken bits of statues, still kinda random, but an arm here, torso there, etc.
Imagine how cool this would be if you made a negative space inside of a cliff face for this thing. Have it completely surprise players while it's sitting there right in front of them. Blow their minds. There'd definitely be some issues making that work but nothing impossible I suspect.
awesome idea for scraps
For a stone golem, you could go with a more statue look, and then add moss to it in order to give the idea that it has been sitting there a while as a statue before attacking the players
You should try kiwi black and brown shoe polish. It’s makes a great wash and really gives stone good color.
cool! I made one and it was amazing :)
amazing
I have found grass tufts from Wish that were good but super cheap even with shipping They were ok I know they aren't as nice as army painter or some of the others because they need to be glued by you but if we are on a budget
This makes me wanna try some different materials for elementals/golem.
Even this same sculpt could be painted differently to work for things like ice.
Thank you for your advise on the tank. Your wart golem is amazing. Do you think this would work for doing an iron or glass golem?
Sure, why not? With a different paint job you could turn this into all sorts of things.
Black Magic Craft
Thank you. Keep the amazing tutorials coming.
Badass!
Makes me laugh that you are being sponsored by a company that sells minis... then you go ahead and just made your own! LOL No but really, great build and great instructions, as usual!
I feel like I'll probably try it out before I get an answer, but was curious about the difference between Elmer's glue and superglue for putting together the insulation for the model
Superglue can melt foam and would be a really expensive option on something this big.
Thanks for such a quick reply!
Well then looks like I'll be taking a shirt car ride to pick some up before I start up.
Thanks so much!
can you make a rock lava like this 2 will be cool to see you do it started on a map for a fraind and got lots of info from what you make
Have you thought about the idea of using the foam stone bricks to create a stone brick golem or something?
I dig your show.🙂
I live in Australia and was just wondering with the polyurethane I can't find the one you use in any of my stores and I don't have the time or money to experiment with other brands
do you have to finish with polyurethane or is it just a preference
awesome miniature it gets the imagination running
keep the vids coming
It offers added protection but is not crucial. Many people don’t bother.
Also can you spray the wash on the dungeon tiles or is that too messy
"They looks like such big, good, strong hands don't they?"
Sorry, I tried to resist but in the end I couldn't help it; I had to add one appropriate quote. In all seriousness though, I've seen a lot of homemade miniatures and this is hands down one of the coolest. You could really go crazy with the paint job and the kinds of things you could add on as extras; given the diversity of environments/terrain and greenery, you could make a whole bunch of these and none of them would have to look the same color-wise (I think we all know already that its unlikely they'd look the same in shape and form, and that's part of what makes them cool).
Why sorry? rock bitter is awesome! I take it as a compliment.
But yea, if someone were to recreate this build and really take their time with it it could be pretty impressive.
Wicked!
Cool build, but i used 1cm thin sheets of cork when i created mine, to better simulate the sedimented rocks, i thnk they give a better and more natural look to the earth golem, instead of boulders, and sice mine was an orc construct for the head i put a plastic bit of a orc standard bearer cow head wirh horns, to simulate a ritual mask for the golem
pics or it didn't happen
Black Magic Craft lmao
I suggest investing in slice proof gloves
Slice proof
not stab proof
So some care is still needed
For a stone golem
Could you use your baking soda super glue combo but with sand mixed in to hide the seams between the pieces?
I get ideas from videos like these.
