It was the title Medium Format that made me come to your channel. I've got the Hasselblad X2D and have fell in love with medium format. Great video and by now you should have your baby. Oh and I've subscribed.
You are so right when you say that medium format has an impressive, unique look; the images you shared had an incredible rendering that can't be overlooked.
A good reliable 6X4.5 option. The main drawbacks are a lack of interchangeable backs and a focal plane shutter. On the plus side though, it means lenses are cheaper!
Appreciate your content Lotta! Love the imagery here. The medium format quality is addictive for sure! I still have my Bronica SQ-A (6x6 format) kit that I bought new in 1990 when I was shooting 6-10 weddings a year as a side gig for 9+ years. I took it out of safe storage a couple of years ago and have been enjoying shooting it again. So crisp and detail for days! Best to you and congratulations on your baby! Blessings… 😃
In the late 80s I used to have a full system of Bronica 645 ETRS. I sold them in a moment of madness in the early 90s for a song. I have quite a few MF cameras at present like Hasselblads, Pentax 67, and a few old folding cameras that use the 120 film. I missed the 645 so much that I have bought a Pentax 645, waiting for it to arrive from Japan. I just want to use it for urban photography with its 45mm lens. Lets see what I make with it. My brother and I actually had a good look at the Mamiya 645 1000s before we went for the Hasselblad in the early 80s. I remember hiring the 645 and then the RB 67, but although they were much cheaper than the Hassselblad, the Hasselblad won hands down.
Haha. Your video dropped 8 minutes ago and I am watching it. The Mamiya 645 is great. But the Pentax 645N may be better value. I love mine. If you don't need the interchangeable backs, the Pentax is probably the better choice. And congratulations on the pregnancy!! Good luck!
Congratulation and have happy birth! I gave my wife the same camera after our son was born. This is an amazing tool, we liked the camera even more than the Hasselblad, on par with the Rolleiflex. I think Mamiya made the best medium format cameras in Japan.
Its definitely not cheap however I find myself just wanting to shoot with mine. It’s such an. Interesting camera. I took it on a shoot for my niece and I had the pistol grip on it and a few people thought it was a super 8 camera lol. I love the images that come out of it. I’ve had to learn how to use it, focus with it and finding a PD prism finder. It’s the journey.
Thanks for the insights into the Mamiya 645. Not sure a camera that size would be an everyday carry for me but you're so right about the quality that medium format gives in print. Congratulations on your impending birth. I'm sure Milde Junior will be the most beautiful and most photographed baby ever.
Long live film. It's all I schoot. Yes I use a Kodak Brownie Bullseye, Holgas and Dianas and a Rolleicord TLR. I was told the Rolleicord also schot 220 film which I have several rolls but after I bought it I asked around and the response it only takes 120 film. I will get a camera that does schoot 220 film but when funds allow. Get a camera strap for it. Congrats on your baby.
First of all, Congrats on the baby! Huge life changer. Secondly, you said you dont use the internal metering. How do you meter your exposures? Thanks so much!
This is my first time ever seeing your content, and I must admit that I really enjoyed it. I really look forward to viewing more of your content in the future. 😊
3:19 the shutter is actually electromagnetic, so not fully mechanical but its so reliable and the battery lasts so long, you are forgiven for thinking its mechanical. 😂
Hi Lotta! Cheers, Thomas
I prefer the Bronica ETRs to the Mamiya 645. Although both are roughly the same size, the Bronica felt better in my hands while the Mamiya felt awkward. Not sure why since they are very similar.
Oh, that camera was my first medium format camera - the only I could afford by then. It's a great camera and I still remember the great feel of it. Unfortunately, I'm more into square. So I decided to sell it. It's not that I miss it. I have another great camera for replacement. I'd recommend the Mamiya 645 to anyone wanting to start medium format photography. It's just a joy to use and that's, what counts most, imho: Enjoying the camera, wanting to use it - just as you said.
Great work! Did you mention you developed the film and scanned it before printing or was it made straight from the negative? I had Mamiya 645 Super, loved that camera.
Awesome videos...I have 2 Mamiyas...1000s and an m645... these cameras have no internal light meters...battery is for the electroic shutter...now time to watch ur pentax videos...I got a SP1000...fantastic camera!
Hi Lotta, greetings from Queensland Australia. Really enjoyed your review of this camera. You mentioned that you do not use the camera's light meter. So, how do you go about getting light readings. Many thanks.
The camera isn't actually fully mechanical, it uses an electromagnetic shutter, run off a small battery on the bottom side of the camera. This is also probably the reason it locked up the first time. On mine a wire from the battery compartment to the shutter corroded and snapped. Camera completley locked up. I resoldered it and works like a charm.
9:33 Kodak Ektachrome E100 the most expensive film, but being a reversal film, one single frame properly exposed is in itself a piece of tangible art. I am not talking about the digital scan of the photograph, the 6 x 6, 6 x 7 or 4,5 x 6 cm frames themselves are pure pieces of art. The subject must be interesting and colorful, composition decent and exposure to be spot on. If exposure is not correct, the collors will not come out as vibrant as expected. Overexposing kills the colors.
I shot this with the Sony A7s3 and used the Hollywood star filter just to test it out and I ended up loving how the filter makes things look a little soft
I recently got a Bronica ETRSi. Huge upgrade from 35mm. I agree with your impressions about medium format. Glad you’re enjoying this camera! And congrats on your pregnancy!
O.K., you're right: for beginners. Another one could be a Bronica 645. I worked a little with the M645 in the mid-seventies: stunning well performing lenses, but the inconvenience when watching though a waist level or prism finder at high format (vertical, portrait) is awful. So you can get an even lower budget 'Praktisix' 6x6 slr if you're not afraid of its ugly design.
Medium Format in real film, is darn expensive! Will you or your clients afford the cost! It has a look, that's nice! But at what operating cost? Cameras are old, may need services ,where? whom? Risks of X-rays at security at airports! It's compact but digital so much better. I did pro work, major companies, major newspapers, major fashion houses, Portraits, but I could have done so much more with digital. If You scan an image, you have a digital file! DIGITAL. Film is not romantic. Period! Have you ever done real tests? Don't cause hardship. I used Medium format, miles of film..Studio, professional printer. I can take my SD card to a printer, download and enjoy a coffee as small job is completed.! Bigger jobs easily mailed or linked. I'm 80 and shoot every day! I still develop my own BW! But realty digital really is stunning..
I hav one and it is not fully mechanical as the shutter speeds work with the batteries, Without the battery it cannot operate different speeds. Thanks for the video nonetheless
Great video ! I've been itching to move into medium format. This seems like the perfect place to start. Thanks for sharing

Thank you so much - I‘d love to be able to replicate that digitally so I don‘t go totally broke, but somehow that just seems impossible.
Tolles Video. Ich wünsche dir alles Gute mit dem Baby ❤

Thank you so much for watching! 😊 Do you have a portfolio online somewhere? I always love seeing people‘s film photos

Thank you!!

You may want to consider buying a few rolls of 220 film. That will give you 30 exposures on a roll instead of 15.
Keep shooting, thanks for sharing

It ended up working again after a CLA - maybe it just needed a little bit of love and attention 😂

Curious what you shot the video with? Has a nice look!

I wondered where I've seen you before. You did some B&H videos, too right?
I recently got a Bronica ETRSi. Huge upgrade from 35mm. I agree with your impressions about medium format. Glad you’re enjoying this camera! And congrats on your pregnancy!
Where did you get it CLA'd and how much did you pay?
Дякую! Ви, напевно, вже народили дитинку, бажаю Вам щастя! Ласкаво просимо до України після війни.
10:24 Beautiful print
oh ive seen you on the b&h channel

Mamiya 7 and Rz def go wayyyyy harder lol
Hey underwater photos while pregnant and then with the baby!!!
This model is not the best one even for beginners - Film magazines can not be changed. This is huge disadvantage...
Nope Pentax 67 is the best MF camera
