- Опубліковано 1 сер 2024
- One of the most exciting developments in resin 3D printing is the use of monochrome LCD panels for masking the UV curing process. Norm tests and reviews the Anycubic Photon Mono X, which uses a 9-inch 4K resolution mono LCD for a large build volume and high-fidelity prints at 3 to 4 times the speed of previous mSLA printers. Here's a rundown of how the Mono X works and our workflow for slicing models as well as the cleanup process using the wash and cure station.

#3dprinting - Наука та технологія
I have just ordered one of these printers and this is genuinely the most helpful review I've ever watched. Clear, concise and full of useful information and tips. Good job!
This was the most informative, clearly explain and best presented video out of all the ones I've seen on this printer. Very nice work!
One of the most helpful and comprehensive videos on resin printing and the process involved that I've seen thus far. I was pretty apprehensive about it at first, but it actually doesn't seem as daunting as I first thought if you use a little care and precautions. Thanks!

My son is a hobbyist and in the market for his first 3d printer. Thank you for this video, Adam. It was incredibly helpful!
I'm just learning 3d printing with a regular filament printer and the resin printer is a miracle of tech in my eyes. The things one can create with this absolutely brilliant.
great explanation, Norm! Love that you add this content on the tested stream. I will use this to help explain the process to others about the differences between resin/filament printing. Just got a phrozen mini 4k with the mono screen. First foray into resin after printing with a Prusa mk3 for about 3 years. Thanks again, Norm! Loving this content!
Prusa settings for Photon Mono X please?
great in depth reviews on most any product. Truly admirable work, you guys.
I’m looking to jump in to resin 3D printing. This is the best video I’ve seen explaining the process. Thank you Norm!!!
This was one of the most Informative videos I’ve watched about the Mono X…I have one coming in the mail soon and will be referencing your video as I start my 3D printing journey!
I now have a really good idea of what to look for when buying a MSLA printer. You obviously have a lot of knowledge about this topic - thank you for sharing!

I have a question. Can this Model of 3D Printer, print in color? I just see the grey colored resin's? That would really be worth the money if it could do that! I'm not saying it's bad in any way, and the scale and definition this resin printer achieves is astounding! But, color would put it over the top. Thanks for a great video, Norm and Crew! Stay safe!
Nvm, I see that all 3D Printer's, have only one color. The vat has only one resin in it. Which would make it only one color.
Oh, it's later in the video. lol! Nvm.
Are there any 3D scanner tools which you could review/test? While I understand the joy of creation of creations sake, the ability to scan a part to modify or repair/replace is really interesting.
What resin was used for the storm trooper helmet?
Thanks for posting this! I just got my first printer- a Photon Mono, and I can’t wait to put it to work👍
This video is what sold me on getting the Photon Mono X as my first printer!!
Thanks, Norm, for a thorough and complete review. I learned a lot.
I still remember the video where you went to see the formlabs printer and were talking about how someday people might have one on their desktop. How far we have come!
Thanks for the review! I really appreciate the little details like all the small consumables that are required. Not a lot of equipment reviews go through that sort of stuff. Affordable resin printing might get me into 3d printing. I've never liked the rough resolution on filament printers. The output from this looks incredible.
That's exactly why I went with the Elegoo Mars. I too wanted to get into 3d printing, and FDM is just so low quality I just had no interest.
The Mars is pretty great, but the Elegoo Saturn is nicely above that. ( Saturn is Elegoos equal to the Photon Mono X. They use the same screen. ) The Saturn far outsold Elegoos expectations, so they won't have it in stock on Amazon until sometime next month, and will probably sell out pretty fast.
Here's a bad image of an example of what the Saturn can do out of the box:
pbs.twimg.com/media/Ek_ZcvfWkAACS3d?format=jpg&name=4096x4096
That's another thing that doesn't get mentioned much: SLA basically just works out of the box, while FDM requires a lot of tweaking.
Now, that isn't to say there isn't plenty of tweaking that can be involved in SLA. There are a lot of settings that need to be tweaked for different things. However, if you stick with a simple grey resin ( always start there ), it's amazing how well it can go.
Yeah, it will cost a little more, especially since IPA and gloves are harder to find right now. But the quality really makes it worth it.
If you've printing mins and such, resin is definitely the way to go. But for functional prototypes and such, you'll still want a FDM printer.
@@zemerick Awesome info cheers, what about cost of the final product. To make the same product does it cost a lot more in consumables with a sla vs fdm printer ?
I thing for now - protorptyping I'll get an ender 3 pro for ~£150 and then later look at these products..
Money is not an issue, it's just that I prefer to properly invest in something when I know alot about it.. so having FDM to start seems like the way I may go
@@ivangutowski If you don't NEED the size, you could get an Elegoo Mars for about $190 us to try out how SLA works, then if it's good for you invest in something better.
SLA does tend to cost more than FDM, but it has also come down a lot. It's a bit hard to directly compare though, as there are lots of factors on both sides.
The simplest though is material price. I'm not too familiar with FDM, but last I heard was something around $15-20 / KG.
Most resins are $35-45 / kg, but some are just $25 or so. ( And can be perfectly good, such as Siraya Tech Simple. )
Outside of the basic resins though, price can indeed absolutely soar. There are resins that are in the hundreds of dollars per KG.
I prefer Elegoo and Siraya Tech for my resin.
Hey .....thank you for this....I just got a Mono X and the wash and cure station...
This is amazing content....I SO appreciate it.
just bought this printer, so stoked. Thanks for putting the video out
I would have loved to see Adam’s reaction to this. It would be interesting to see from his perspective to see how far making has come.
This was so simply explained, and you flawlessly walked us through every step! 👏
The tips at the end on workflow have been tremendous, we need more of that.
Thank you for this detailed review. It was comprehensive and also it covered things i had not know about.
Great video, Norm! I am thinking about getting into 3d printing and I am a complete novice. This video has been a huge help, thanks!
As ever, Norm, excellent work. Thanks for this.
Really well explained and comprehensive- nice job Norm!
Thanks!
was going to write the same, keep up the good work!
agreed, thanks
This is maybe not the place to ask it, but you happen to share my (pretty rare) last name. I was gonna DM you but apparently you can’t on UA-cam, do you have any public instagrams or something I could ask you some questions? I don’t encounter a lot of Ainslie’s I don’t know so I was pretty surprised to see that name pop up. If not no worries.
@@AnnLiesArtist bruh...
This a great review and workflow! Easy enough for any beginner who just got this same printer. it's me. Thank you
Great content. Clear , simple and light.
Ypu are so thorough in you explanations-REALLY appreciated!!!
I would love for one of you guys to do a full breakdown on proper clean up and disposal of all the waste generated from 3d printing. The resin gets into everything. Right now, I throw what ever gets resin on it into a box with a UV lamp to cure, but a giant tub of IPA is something else.
The advancement of 3D printers is so rapid that it keeps me from buying and starting the hobby.
I'm going to start here!
Don't let the advancement of tech hold you back ! Get a printer that suits you and only upgrade if you really feel like the newer feature will make your life that much better :)
It's the time sink for me. They are just too slow. I want a model in 30 mins max, not hours.
@@Morganistalking Making something very complex with intricate details being done in that kind of time isn't viable for at least another 10 years. It's like expecting a sculptor or artist to finish that fast. This stuff is too custom and complex to expect something not to take time to be done. Also it's not like you're physically sitting there doing it.
@@Shakiahjprod yeah I get you. Still needs to be quicker for me personally.
Mine arrived today! I’ll be posting some process videos soon
Love the detailed explanations
Great vid Norm!
Great review! I found this very useful :) Thank you
Incredible job! Great video!
Thanks, Norm for a really useful video. I have the wee photon but the Mono X looks better and I see they have decent guide rails so less wobble on the Z axis.
Norm,
Thank you so much for this video, my first 3D printer was the Elegoo Mars and it was easy to use and dial in the settings. I recently upgraded to the Anycubic Mono X and I was really struggling to get the settings right, I print mostly mini and props so when I saw your settings I took a screen shot and I’m going to try and them tonight and see what success I have. Great video keep up the good work.
@Markel216 working perfectly I may dial back my bottom exposure time from 60 to something in the neighborhood of 35 or so which should speed up the prints a bit but all other settings re perfect!
This was very good. Good details and clearly presented. Thanks.
Man, the print quality of SLA printers blows my mind every time.
Sold!!! Great review! First time 3d printer-rer here!
Norman, this is a great review and I'm glad to see you having fun with this great printer.
One thing that was missing for me, was to address the use of resins. What's the cost of resins, what different types of resin have you used, and most importantly: do you have options for this printer that are not proprietary? I think that's a big deal for resin printers as many of them may (or may not) have a low price of acquisition, but then the user will be stuck having to buy supplies from that company at a higher price point. Looking forward to more reviews, and thanks for making this video!
Thank you for this impressive review.
Thanks for uploading this video, I found it very informative. The first 3d printer I bought for myself is a Voxelab Aquilla and I do love it. I wanted to get another 3d printer that does resin and after watching this video I am pretty much sold on this one. I print a lot of Deadpool items for my friends and to sell just for fun, I also make my own designs and print them. I am looking forward to getting my resin 3d printer.
Thank you for this informative video. Excellent work.
3D Printing is growing so fast that I can't wait to see a resin printer that prints in color.
Thanks for everything you mentioned at the beginning of the video. This is the first time I buy a 3D printer and I wanted to make sure I could get something good to start for a couple of years. With that said, I had to choose between the Eleego Mars 3, Eleego Saturn or this one, the Anycubic Photon Mono X. The big variety of choices mislead me to almost buy an old version, but thanks to most reviews, including yours, I decided to give this printer a try.
Not gonna lie, I'm pretty excited. Now I'm looking for the correct Cure & Wash machine for this printer.
This video inspired me to get this printer. It's amazing.
Hi Tested. I think your content is awesome :D Thank you for making it :D
Thanks for your comment! We appreciate it!
Thank you for a very informative video. Awesome!
gettin my 1st 3d printer. an anycubic photon and the cure and wash station, awesome sale by them
been looking at different once and I like this one the best although because of budgets i have to go smaller. THANKS! This is very helpful
Would love to see the brilliant leaps in print quality MSLA gives us leading a shift back to physical studio models for film and tv sci fi ships over cgi. Looking forward to the day when I can download any iconic ship/vehicle in kit form to print and build with no more fretting over losing or botching up bits and being able to produce custom parts easily and quickly.
I literally just started to look at resin printers the day before this aired! This is such great video explaining it, and my gosh I can't wait to get one, though I'll probably go with a phrozen 4k mini over this unit ^-^
I am looking at one of these right now. This would be my first printer. I see a lot can do with, and I have been watching this type way before anyone know of resin 3D printers were outside the big industrial type.
The wash and cure plus station is awesome.
Thank you for this video!
loving the keyboard
Drink everytime he says "workflow". 😄 Nice video Norm!
I feel i have to comment just to say great job, I getting a resin printer (waiting on delivery) and this was really good coverage of teh whole set up and process. I have watched tested for years now (since we lost mythnbusters and i needed a savage) and Norm you really have grown in to the role over the years. Looking forward to when restrictions are lifted and we get to see you guys back togtahrer working on projects. I think you need to print out a baby yoda for Adam to paint and finish ;)
It's actually a reallly bad coverage.
My man WAS NOT WEARING A MASK and did not talk about the toxicity and fumes from uncured resin.
Like, holy shit, just the location alone (no open ventilation right next to resin printer) screams (novice).
I was an early adopter, and by the time i received the printer (about 3 weeks ago) lichee slicer already supported it, in fact it was the only slicer i could find that did...
nothing short of amazing
thanks
I've had a photon for years, and just upgraded to the Mono X (and a base Mono) and I love them both! The increased speed and size is absolutely a game changer
In addition, there's another change that is extremely welcome. My old original photon vented air from the build chamber out of the printer so it produced a lot of fumes. The new mono printers don't do that, so as long as the lid is on there's practically no fumes (it's not a perfect seal, but close). So I'm able to work near them without any trouble.
Is there any data on how it emits fewer fumes?
Great video, Thank you
Can we get an update on Oculus Medium as a sculpting software for 3D Printing? There was that awesome video with Frank a while back and I'm really curious to see how the process and software has improved since then!
Toward the end of the vid I was wondering about how long you could use the IPA before you had to change it and could you filter out the particulate resin and reuse the alcohol. 5 seconds later you told us how you do it!!!!! An informative review of the MONO X, and a nicely instructive vid for general mono printing. Now get your your hands on the Elegoo Saturn and review that. THANKS!!!!!
Just picked this printer up on a special 11.11 deal for less than $500. Can't wait to get into printing, super excited!
Did you start printing ? How do you like it so far
@@Ozzy2341 I've been printing so much that I went through 1kg bottle in a week. Getting familiar with supports and billowing the build with proper drain holes. It's a real learning curve.
Thank you for the video
6:15 Another benefit is that the LCD lasts a lot longer before it wears out and needs replacing.
Ahhhh!! The LCARS keyboard! So bummed I missed out on that run...
The printer is nice. That Batman poster is AWESOME.
Forget the printer - that Batman poster is brilliant!
Norm has excellent taste in interior design.
Ha!
Nice review. I have had a Monoprice SLA for a couple of years and want to upgrade to a better quality printer. This one looks really decent!
Great video..
Had one for a week on loan from my neighbor and the only reason why i'm not switching from my CR-10 mod is because i'm perfectly ok with prototyping around the little bits that the resin printers can make from scratch. To me, the precision i've achieved with the CR-10 is far faster and perfectly acceptable vs the whole resin process. That said, if i'd start fresh, i'd likely choose the resin over mine.
I'm sold.
It's mesmerising
Very good video
Very articulate and accurate description of the ENTIRE process. There is far too much post-production cleaning requiring a dedicated space for all of the necessary supplies. This obviously is a segment of the hobby for those with the computing power to manipulate the 3D models (not an older iMac) and a proficiency in 3d jargon, apps, programs, etc. I guess I’ll just buy printed parts from online vendors.
Just ordered mine with a wash station. The anticipation is killing me.
Mine is coming in 2 weeks reee.
Mine seems to be lost :(
@@jeeplvr2000 Well I ordered it from Amazon. so if it takes too long I'll just cancel my order :(
Bought one of these yesterday because it was on sale for 210 bucks on Amazon . If you want one check there from time to time!
Great Video....Just ordered mine....Do you have a video yet on proper ventilation?
If I build a 3D printer it is going to be one of these.
Can't wait to get one and start printing a 40k Titan
How do you deal with the fumes? How is the smell of the resin in other parts of the house?
Great vid! So I watched the vid you did on the Elegoo as well. I am trying to decide on which one now. Based on the printing they both are impressive. So maybe based on the software, which one wuld give you better options on the availability of models that can be used as in file formats etc... and which has a better software program or options to use third party software etc... hope this makes sense.
Something you didn't touch on that I'm curious about because it's just set up in that enclosed space: How is the smell/fumes? I've heard that UV cure resins have an unpleasant smell and can even be harmful if you breathe in the fumes. Is that room at all ventilated, or is it an exaggerated concern?
If you don't want to use the crappy ass Photon slicer this has been my workflow through Chitubox.
- Do all your printing prep (Supports, hollowing, adding holes, ect.) in Chitubox.
- Export the supported model as a STL file.
- Import your supported model into 3D builder (Free Microsoft software) and repair the file, if needed.
- Import repaired STL to Photon slicer and slice it up.
Hope this helps someone. This was my first 3D printer but I did a ton of research while I waited for the printer to get delivered. This work flow has worked flawlessly for me.
P.S. great review!
So you soak the parts in IPA then wash it in more IPA?
I've been looking into resin printers, recently, so this was a great help. Thanks Norm!
Just curious, are you using IPA in the Wash and Cure, as well? Or just water?
Ipa mate
i would love to see a mask made with this thing.
What would you recommend the UV power % should be for translucent resin?
going to buy one with my stimulus check ;)
Lol I just did not this model but same brand smaller size to start
Thank you for the intro to 3d prints im excited to get my photon mono, a question on safety i have is i noticed your printing in the same room that you game, is this safe to do inside my bedroom or shouldi stick to the garage to avoid filling my room with toxic gas
The LycheeSlicer supports the Mono X printer and the .pwmx file format.
Where did you get the Batman (1966 version) poster from Norm? I've got a Photon Mono X on the way. I can't wait.
Loved the video, but could you please tell the measurements in mm also? I don't know what 7 inches is, and it would be nice to know right away, instead of having to look it up
probably a question for anycubic themselves, but is it safe to work (while the printer is running, while handling prints) with uncured resin in living space like bedrooms, or lounge? Also, I heard depending on the liquid resin used, it can really smell, would that be a sign of inhaling fumes?
Off subject but I have a big decision to make, I have a elegoo mars pro 2 in the box unopened as a Christmas gift, but then saw an anycubic photon mono which went on sale for $249, so price is close to same as mars. So with price not a consideration , which should I go with? Mars or mono? Do you have a Definitive choice? My gut tells me the anycubic is a better made machine , but I really do not know. The ventilation fan of the mars is very appealing. But I hear it’s hard to access if ever needed replaced. The screen I hear on the mars pro 2 is easily scratched , but I’m not sure if that was on just early models or if new models are made of glass? I believed the anycubic screen are glass but am told there are same screen used on mars. So I’m torn, any advice is appreciated. Which is better printer, if you were to buy one or the other, which would you buy?
That was a very thorough review Norm. Thanks. From the video the prints looked very high res. I’d love to investigate the resolution of those prints a bit further as I’m looking at purchasing a SLA printer. Do you have photos of the prints on any of your socials that I could check out?
im using a LD-002H with siraya tech fast resin navy grey and my normal exposure is 1.5s perfect exposure and bottom layer @ 20s and i end up with bottom splits what am i doing wrong?
