An LSD is a differential that limits the amount of slip between the wheels it powers. The best way to think of it, is if one wheel is on ice and the other on pavement, an open differential (non limited slip) will spin the wheel on ice and no power goes to the one on pavement. With a limited slip differential, you'll get power to both wheels allowing the vehicle to move forward.
