  • Chris Lord Alge explains his approach to parallel drum compression. Full course: puremix.com/li...
    Puremix Mentor Chris Lord-Alge (CLA) demonstrates parallel drum compression. Whether you are processing a single drum track, or the whole kit. It is one of the most used technique in order to get a punchy, and in your face sound.
    See how the master of all compression Chris Lord Alge does it and experiment for yourself with your own compressors when mixing drums. Parallel compression drums can be a tricky thing. He shows you how to mix drums by showing you compressing drums.

    Send out from drums as in all drum channels out to the Aux channel or use a send out from each drum track?

    • @JohnnyAmato
      @JohnnyAmato 6 років тому +6

      From what I understand, you can do it either way. If you send to it from the individual tracks themselves, you have a little bit more control, like you might not want to send as much hi-hat or OHs, for example, so you can then turn those individual sends down a tad. Make sure you do it as a post send though, so it's getting an exact copy of your already mixed/balanced signal. Unless you specifically want to send a completely dry, un-mixed signal, then click "pre" in the send.

    • @pmSTUDIOse
      @pmSTUDIOse 6 років тому +1

      A very relevant question. Cause that will greatly affect what sound you will get. Mostly you crush the compressed signal and add it to taste to your uncompressed.

    • @deanroddey2881
      @deanroddey2881 6 років тому +2

      Given only a 2:1 ratio, I would assume pretty hard, right? Otherwise it wouldn't make much difference just mixed in under what's already there (which sounds already pretty heavily compressed.)

    • @kitmateyawa7829
      @kitmateyawa7829 3 роки тому

      On stereo channels, you have a choice of stereo or dual-mono plugins.

    • @thlgnd
      @thlgnd 3 роки тому +1

      @@kitmateyawa7829 That's not really a good explanation.
      Anyway, what unlinked stereo does is instead of compressing the left and right channel with the same amount of gain reduction it compresses both channels separately.
      Meaning if the left channel is louder it will be discretely compressed harder than the other channel. As a result there will be constant movement of the entire stereo field from left to right in the overall sound.

    That was the most confusing explanation of PC I've ever seen. Why use a 2 to 1 ratio on a crush bus? Crazy guy. The stereo link thing? What is he talking about lol. If a tom hits on the left, there's nothing else really playing on the right to worry about. This is the weirdest thing I've seen him explain. He should know better that nothing will happen to the drum sound.
    And why is Daughtry playing at the end? Did you mix that song or are you infringing on copyright? I see that he was mixing that... but then... he's not and it's still playing... we see what you're doing.

  • @PereRevert
    @PereRevert 2 роки тому +3

    Love CLA and it's and has been my absolute mixing reference... but man, in this video is such an arrogant person with his statements. Guessing he has a bad day or was bored to repeat and repeat over and over the same concepts. I always like the attitude but in this case the fine line between attitude and arrogance was clearly trespassed. That demonstrates brilliant minds could also have a bad day too, like everybody.
