- Chris Lord Alge explains his approach to parallel drum compression. Full course: puremix.com/li...
Puremix Mentor Chris Lord-Alge (CLA) demonstrates parallel drum compression. Whether you are processing a single drum track, or the whole kit. It is one of the most used technique in order to get a punchy, and in your face sound.
See how the master of all compression Chris Lord Alge does it and experiment for yourself with your own compressors when mixing drums. Parallel compression drums can be a tricky thing. He shows you how to mix drums by showing you compressing drums.

Great video
thank you very much
"You want stereo linked, enjoy yourself"😂😂😂😂😂😂....i love this men
Cant really doubt the guy. God of The Mix. People say there are no hard rules in mixing but CLA's words is like gospel.
That's it, I'm calling my band Lord Algae. Well Bloody Duh is bound to tear up the charts!
And I'll do the whole thing on a Tascam Porta 4.
First! great I don´t like to stereo link neither! Dual mono and individual processing makes everything wider.
You are a monster mixer Chris, my deep respect as a drummer for your craft!!!
The most confident mixer, I look up to him
Hold my beer..
Kit sounds amazing as usual.
Absolute beast! Hats off!
I've been doing this since 1986. 👍🏻😉
No you have not
Can I buy that studio gear from Best Buy?
Chris Lord LA-DI-DA Alge!!!
Love this
1:07 On repeat. The way he says "I want it to be stereo not mono" reminds me of a little kid demanding chocolate ice scream instead of vanilla.
Shit humor on UA-cam is even better than actual jokes

Send out from drums as in all drum channels out to the Aux channel or use a send out from each drum track?
I think he compressed the bus with the drums
From what I understand, you can do it either way. If you send to it from the individual tracks themselves, you have a little bit more control, like you might not want to send as much hi-hat or OHs, for example, so you can then turn those individual sends down a tad. Make sure you do it as a post send though, so it's getting an exact copy of your already mixed/balanced signal. Unless you specifically want to send a completely dry, un-mixed signal, then click "pre" in the send.
well laardy dar
Great Pure Mix!
Great!
No stereo link! AMEN!!!
CRUSH!
I thought is sounded better (more natural) bypassed. Damn the loudness war!
Whats the attack time?
It's fixed to 1ms on 33609
@@klaven_dn thx!
Did I understand correctly that he uses parallel compression in mono?
Pathtolaw dual mono
How much gain reduction?!
He should've explained, but use your ears and get it smackin
GENIAL
How hard is he hitting the compressor?
A very relevant question. Cause that will greatly affect what sound you will get. Mostly you crush the compressed signal and add it to taste to your uncompressed.
Given only a 2:1 ratio, I would assume pretty hard, right? Otherwise it wouldn't make much difference just mixed in under what's already there (which sounds already pretty heavily compressed.)
Gotta assume since it’s CLA, that every meter is in the red
Why such a low ratio?
Either I didn't get it or he didn't actually tell he sends individual tracks or whole bus? Or the title means something else?
This was the worst explanation of PC I've ever seen. CLA knows what he's talking about, but this is weird.
CLA vs Brauer fist fight...... who u putting money on?
Essio Fuzulu i would say Brauer to be less machine war than CLA. Maybe deeper and more feelings. But CLA rocks it and makes everything fucking solid and wide

@@pablocamats8596 yeah me too haaahaahahahaha
Can anyone help me explaining what did he meant by mono and stereo link
On stereo channels, you have a choice of stereo or dual-mono plugins.
@@kitmateyawa7829 That's not really a good explanation.
Anyway, what unlinked stereo does is instead of compressing the left and right channel with the same amount of gain reduction it compresses both channels separately.
Meaning if the left channel is louder it will be discretely compressed harder than the other channel. As a result there will be constant movement of the entire stereo field from left to right in the overall sound.
hahahaha i like that he is so vicious
I thought it was'nt a good idea to eq parallel compression processings !!!
There is no hard and fast rule in audio engineering. If it sounds good, thats all that matters.
Thank you !
Yep, there are no rules, but keep in mind that it may cause some phase issues.
it's also probably safer in analogue
I think so, because he said it with confidence !
"Well Bloody Da" - Who says that? .... Oh Lord - Alge
He said la dee da, which is pretty common, at least in the US.
I know the phrase. He just cracks me up the way he talks.
Me too, he's definitely entertaining!
Wait mom legend is explaining here
Well bladi-da
Understood shit
HE DOESN’T DO IT FOR ANYTHING. PERIOD.
That was the most confusing explanation of PC I've ever seen. Why use a 2 to 1 ratio on a crush bus? Crazy guy. The stereo link thing? What is he talking about lol. If a tom hits on the left, there's nothing else really playing on the right to worry about. This is the weirdest thing I've seen him explain. He should know better that nothing will happen to the drum sound.
And why is Daughtry playing at the end? Did you mix that song or are you infringing on copyright? I see that he was mixing that... but then... he's not and it's still playing... we see what you're doing.
Love CLA and it's and has been my absolute mixing reference... but man, in this video is such an arrogant person with his statements. Guessing he has a bad day or was bored to repeat and repeat over and over the same concepts. I always like the attitude but in this case the fine line between attitude and arrogance was clearly trespassed. That demonstrates brilliant minds could also have a bad day too, like everybody.
He's a genius but not so good at explaining what he's doing
I'm not English but I still understand
@@vdbsamsung4773no you don't. You're clueless.
2:14 That's not subtle. That's not subtle at all WTF?
It was absolutely subtle, you nut. Listen to that section of this video again, without watching the screen. You don't even notice. You mix with your eyes, don't you?
Actually, you don't even mix music at all... do you? Why comment on stuff you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about?
He's like a 12 year old brat but he's my fav teacher ))))
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
