The Truth About Florida's Endangered Fishery (Catch Clean & Cook Red Snapper)

  • The truth about this fish that NOAA believe's to be at risk of endangerment. In this video I explore why Florida's gulf has an 103 day red snapper season but the Atlantic side only has 1 day of recreational harvest. While exploring this curious disparity, we go in search of a few huge red snapper of our own. We then hit the inlet for a few giant snook and close out the video with an epic snapper catch, clean and cook! Shoutout to ‪@SunsOutFishing‬ for joining me on this adventure!

    Talk to your local divers and spearfishermen. If you see what we see underwater it’s pretty clear what the dominant species is down there. I’m sure if you ask around you can get some footage to put forward to the correct people. It’s overwhelming how many snapper there are down there when you see it first hand. Especially up in the northern area of Florida, Ponce/Flagler area.

    Your description of fisheries management between the south Atlantic and Gulf is misleading. The Gulf Council allocates quotas in the Gulf to the states simply because there are more stakeholders - there are 5 states with gulf shoreline. While NOAA solely manages the South Atlantic, that makes sense given the geography. NOAA also sits on the Gulf Council. The Gulf Council and NOAA both adhere to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Act to guide management. Comparing the Gulf habitat for red snapper to the Atlantic is apples and oranges. The east coast gets deep quick limiting red snapper habitat. The Gulf runs shallow for a long distance providing much more red snapper habitat.

    I’m pretty sure NOAA only takes there snapper populations from natural bottom and reefs, therefore not including the tons of fish living in artificial reefs. The state population survey includes the numbers that live in artificial reefs is why they are much more accurate. I fish out of Alabama so I’m not familiar with south Atlantic but in the gulf there a tons of artificial reefs and wrecks that most of our fish are caught out of.

    As a commercial fisherman of southwest florida, respectfully, leave them closed. There’s a lot of good ole boys around the state that depend on the red snapper to get them through a bad trip, to get food on their families tables. We go out after red groups vermillions and red snappers. When all else fails the red snappers get us the Mooney we need. If we open up red snapper they will be depleted in a year

    The important question probably is if the red snapper spawn collectively as one population or in many small areas, in the later case I wouldn't stress too much, as long as the local population is good you're good, if they are just one "north" Atlantic population then I do think people need to be really careful, but I don't think that's the case here

  • @matthewcostin703
    @matthewcostin703 3 місяці тому

    The gulf red snapper season is managed by the Gulf of Mexico fishery management council and not solely FWC. The council is a federal organization and basically an extension of the NOAA. The Atlantic actually has a year round state season while as the gulf only has 103 days. And while you aren't gonna catch red snapper in state waters in the Atlantic, making it pointless, you also aren't really going to catch any in the gulf state waters either. Most of the time we have to run 20-30 miles offshore in the gulf to catch decent snapper. I do believe that the 24 hour federal season is ridiculous for the Atlantic but at the same time there is significantly more snapper in the gulf. I've seen snapper hit top water in 150 ft of water in the gulf. Its not uncommon to mark snapper from top to bottom of the water column in 300 ft with hundreds on a single wreck.

  • @Fishing4Mortgages
    @Fishing4Mortgages 3 місяці тому +1

    I thought the Lottery idea was great, we dive in NC, and all the wrecks are lit up with ARS. So figured I'd apply for one.
    BUT.......
    Looks like NOAA's Lottery team PICKS the Spots they are allowing to be fished lol. "What: Each angler selected will be randomly assigned to a group, experimental or control, with different requirements for each group (see Project Summary below). Participants that are assigned to the experimental group will be allowed to harvest 3 red snapper/day on designated FWC Hot Spot Fleet fishing trips.
    Where: Cape Canaveral NASA Vehicle Assembly Building north to the Florida/Georgia line."
    Not sure what the snapper situation is like in that area, but It would be great if anglers could pick their own spots, where they know factually they can barely catch any other fish due to the ferocity of the overpopulated ARS in many places.

    They can start by maybe giving the commercial industry a reasonable limit for the season and not give them double quotas when they start crying because they can’t make a living. They let the loby win in the 2002 legislative session and it was a buyin system that only a small number of owners hold the rights to the entire ars grouoer an shrimp limits. They lease and trade them now like the real-estate an energy futures. Sad that the commercial guys who actually bought in are basically at the will of the loby who can just change it again to benefit them under the guise of protection for the fisheries.
