That;s the entrance of Sophia's children hospital and my heart almost broke again. In September 2011, my then 12 yo son was escorted the same way from our local hospital to this amazing hospital while having a deadly asthma attack. Unfortunately he slipped into a coma just 2 hrs after arriving there but, thank God and the amazing staff and doctors there and from the Erasmus MC (12 of them slept in the hospital to watch over my son) he woke up after 9 days.
In 2009 I was also rushed to the EMC due to a heart attack caused by my chemo - and I too made it.
Whoever this patient was, I can only pray that they made it and are healthy and strong now, and that they are blessed with a wonderful life. My heart goes out to everyone in this situation. And dear people, please keep having respec for those who watch over us and do their best to keep us healthy and safe. At the end of the day, they are humans too, like you and me, but they chose to do this amazing, underrated and underpaid jobs, for us all.

There are 3 motorcycles driving in front of the ambulance(s).
The first 2 do the work shown in the video, they are in contact with the 3rd, the commander. He continues to drive shortly in front of the ambulance and signals them with hand signals which lane to use and whether the speed is increasing or decreasing.

To answer your question at 5:58, why some many roundabouts. They are simply way more efficient then traffic lights in many situations. They keep traffic flowing but also break up the otherwise straight road forcing you to lower speeds. Essentially they double as an obstacle forcing you to pay attention and drive more safely.

I don't think you mentioned it (or I missed it coming up!) but these kinds of escorts are almost always hospital-to-hospital, and are intended for transfers of patients who are in really bad straights or immense pain. The intent is to keep the space of the ambulance as constant as possible by avoiding all the usual speeding up and down as well as avoidable bumps that could lead to complications as the EMT / doctors in the back of the ambulance try to keep that person alive.

This type of ambulance assistance is common. There are many videos to be found. This is part of the duties of the Dutch police. Almost daily work. It's beautiful to watch indeed. And incredible how they get everyone to do what they want with just a few hand gestures. People have no clue what's happening, yet everyone cooperates without even knowing what they're supposed to do. Amazing....
Indeed we have a LOT of roundabouts here. They work very well, but can be challenging in situations like these obviously. But they don't happen all that often. When an ambulance requires a police escort it's usually because speed is of the essence or they really can't hit the brake because of a certain medical procedure happening in the back, or both.

In the Netherlands we know this phenomenon as a VTB (traffic technical guidance) or as an emergency transport. Such trips are often organized if, for example, a patient has to be in a hospital as soon as possible or if a patient is so unstable (for example due to neck & back injury). In the latter case we speak of a ''sliding transport'' which actually means as smooth as possible. So without much braking or accelerating. The gentlemen who provide these accompaniments, and in particular Team The Hague, are highly specialized and receive training throughout the year in guiding ambulances and VIPs.
    Then answer your questions.
we have so many roundabouts because it has been proven that roundabouts are better for traffic flow as opposed to traffic lights. It is also a lot safer because cars have to slow down so that cyclists and pedestrians are seen earlier.
the police rides on The BMWs (BMW R 1200 RT) are used for traffic surveillance (these are the motorcycles you see in the video, you find them very quiet, but in reality there is a wonderful sound underneath).
the Yamahas (type MT-07 Tracer) are used for neighborhood surveillance. These are the light motorcycles
Unfortunately my english writing is not sufficient so I used google translate so some words will not be correct. But I assume the context is clear.

We work at 2 hospitals quite often including the area where the ambulances come in. 99% of the time it's not that serieus, the ambulance pulls in and the patient gets unloaded, all very calmly. But that one time when they come in blasting their sirens and a bunch of people are already waiting inside you know it's not good.

Netherlands is filled with roundabouts instead of traffic lights. They gave up on the "stop signs", wich seem to work fine in North America. Dutch like to save time, yet its also filled with speedbumps not so much fun for ambulances and truckdrivers and costing a lot of time. Also "smart"traffic lights, unlike the States, they respond to the traffic flow and some can also be switched to red in emergencies like these and hold all traffic at crossings. tx for the video 🍀💎

They do these escorts for things like getting people transported between hospitals, often there's only so much time they have to do it so then they call for police escort and... well, this happens :D If I'm not mistaken there's like 3 motorcycles involved, and 1 car .The motorcycles leapfrog eachother to block intersections, the car coordinates, and the ambulance follows the whole thing.

These escorts are mainly to provide a smooth ride for the patient. Certain patients are really unstable and therefor can't take a lot of excessive braking or acceleration. These officers make sure the ambulance never has to brake excessively or quickly accelerate to get to their destination (to the officers, unnecessary braking for the ambulance seems like a fail). But it also speeds up the ride for the ambulance, but these escorts are most commonly used for patient who are in a life threatning and therefor unstable condition.

    Little heads up.
    - Officers that perform a Ambulance escort are allowed to exceed the speedlimit to ensure they arrive as soon as possible at the next junction/roundabout exc. This is to clear any lanes that need to be free, stop traffic, and communicate with the widest possible timeframe.
    - The drivers course the officers get is mental, these officers know how to ride.
    - When a officer comes in with all sirenes and lights on, all orders, both verbal and signalled must be heeded. Hey may stop traffic, clear lanes to the point he may direct traffic in any direction if required. Not heeding these orders will usually after a warning result in concequences i.e a fine exc.
    - If required or the situation demands a escort may clear or requisiton drive lanes usually reserved for specific traffic I.e Buslanes, tramlines or the shoulder of the freeway.
    - Officers are allowed to cross full striped lanes, pass traffic on the right side, ignore stopsigns, and ignore red lights exc, when under sirenes and lights. The name of the game is speed. However, safety for the officers and other traffic users is paramount.
    - Usually officers are quite friendly and easygoing, when under situations like escort duty, they do not muck about, it shows, and they will only assert themselves that way if its needed.
    - Officers have a basic 3 year training program. It results in as shown a very capable police force.
    - Handsignals that the officers use are required theory in the Dutch drivers exam, atleast in my time atleast 5 questions would be about handsignals or verbal ones ifnot more.

The two or sometines 3 Guys in front are called spitsers (frontrunners) and take turns in blocking of junctions.
These are specialy trained teams of motorcycle cops. They do this all the time. They don’t stress out. Because this is a
    Daily job for them.

The Erasmus MC and attached Sofia childrens hospital are a university hospital, both top notch and suited for highly complex and life threatening medical situations.
There are plenty of hospitals that are closer to zoetermeer, suggesting this might have been a child in critical condition and would need to get the best medical care to make it.
Hats off to the officers and ambulance crew. I hope it saved whoever was in the back of that ambulance.

Many people ask why we don't use helicopters to transport people from hospital to hospital in situations like these. The first reason: the patient is way more stable in the back of an ambulance, than in a helicopter. Second: in The Netherlands, all distances are short. The route in this video is 31 km (~ 20 miles), from the edge of Zoetermeer to the city centre of Rotterdam. It is way more efficient to do it this way. The Dutch police has a special trainig programme for police officers, escorting an ambulance is extremely coordinated. Imagine doing this at rush hour, it will go the same way. These officers have a lot more rights than normal police officers, like stopping traffic ahead and going the wrong way for a few miles, just to avoid traffic jams. And they drive very fast BMW motorcycles, and they are allowed to drive up to 50 km/h (30 mph) more than allowed on a road. Imagine going 50-60 mph in a 20 mph zone. Yes, they can do that safely, because they have had lots and lots of training.

About roundabouts, they're safest: if you crash, it's always at a low speed (how fast can you take a roundabout?) than with usual intersections.
I've seen some USA/Canadian crash vids and cars just topple over. That never happens here.

Actually my dad was transported from his work in a shipyard, back in the days to the hospital with police escort when he fell down on his back 11 meters down thats roughly 33 feet. Also i've been in this entrance of the hospital in 2017 when my mom got transported from my city to the Erasmus hospital with a spinal cord injury. I was a ride along with the ambulance but the situation was so stressfull I didnt get to enjoy the ride from the front seat next to the driver.

as a teenager I once witnessed these police bikes escort a ambulance through heavy traffic in the Hague. they where going blindingly fast with same as here the bikes alternating for each intersection it felt like the ambulance was actually going somewhere near twice the speed limit. later that day I heard on the news some kid shot the janitor on his school in the face one school over from mine. unfortunately the janitor did not make it . but It was damn impressive how fast it all went past everyone.

This is not used for "normal" ambulance rides, but surely for life or death situations police escort is called... And this is how it workes.

When I was in college ('90s), we were tasked with calculating the difference between round abouts and normal traffic light crossings. The round about is much more efficient and safer, even in complex situations. As you know, us dutchies are very economical (or cheap :)) so every minute won in traffic is awesome and to combine that with less accidents and victims is an absolute home run!

    Oosterheem 😂
That's like the newest part of Zoetermeer City and still looks so clean.
And I think I also recognized the former Miss Etam building before they pass the Silverdome.
This probably is an older video because I thought I recognized the Shurgard storage facility (before they reached the highway on the border of Rokkeveen and Oude Dorp) which burned down to the ground a while ago.
The reason why they have so much roundabouts there is because of the huge amount of accidents in the past due to speeding.
The way people tend to drive there is crazy for such a small country, not anywhere near as relaxed as in the US.
Highway speeds Fast 'n' Furious style within city limits is what caused all the roundabouts and it worked.
Occasionally some fool will crash right through one and end up dead or something, but other than that it ain't half as bad as it once was.

The leapfrog trick is performed by two or three bikes. Another one is constantly right in front of the ambulance. These guys once guided me from the A4 near Leiderdorp all the way to the centre of The Hague. The Hague has a lot of one way streets and back then, we did not have any kind of navigation systems. If it wasn't for this bikers unit I probably woudn't have found the friggin' hospital at all. And this was on a saturday, during a major strike and demonstration...

So many roundabouts is one of the reasons why traffic in The Netherlands is quite smooth and easy. Not on every cornor a traffic light which means less traffic jams. There is a video about driving in our country, compared to other countries. I will try to find it.
