I raced stock cars for over a quarter century. I started at the bottom and worked my way all the way up to ASA. They ONLY time I ever got hurt bad enough to go to the hospital, was in a figure 8 car. Those guys are nuts.
I saw my first Figure 8 race at Sunshine Speedway, St. Petersburg FL in 1970, and I was hooked. Have also seen Figure 8 races at Golden Gate Speedway, Tampa FL; Islip Speedway NY (all defunct); Citrus County Speedway, Inverness, FL; Riverhead Raceway NY; and others. This is absolutely the most exciting Figure 8 action I have ever seen! The criss-crossing at the "X" is UNBELIEVABLE! I have GOT to make it to a World Figure 8 Championship 3 Hour Enduro- "The Most Spectacular Race On Earth"! :^)
10 years after watching this video and posting my original comments, I am finally going to attend a World Figure 8 Championship 3-hour Enduro - September 8, 2018. I've got my tickets, hotel reservations, and will make the trip from Long Island, NY. I have this video to thank for helping me discover Outlaw Figure 8 racing and the 3-hour World Championship, the greatest spectacle on the planet. Thanks for posting :^)
I'm from ny, and out here we have a class of dirt modifieds that run the "sail panels". The reason for them is to direct more air over the spoiler to give them more downforce. Also, on a dirt modified, they tighten them up through the corners, but I'm not sure they would have much effect, if any, on a tiny asphalt track like this.
The big side panels are also for side-bite diving into the corner. Helps keep the car from getting loose. To get the car to "lean against" the air. Sprint cars stagger their side panels to get more surface area to "hit" the air since they are only allowed their side panels to be so big.
When we came down from Mich. to run the 3-hour race in the late 80's, I jumped into a friends car to run some laps during practice. I never ran F-8 before. Five laps and I had my fill. I may be a lot of things but an F-8 driver, I AM NOT!
I'm the crew chiefs son of Doug Greig 33 its pretty normal I remember when I was 3 seeing that race I thought this sprint cars in the back of the line up where cool I go most of the time but my dad gave up but he works on them sometimes so he kinda did not give up
Doug Definatley didn't cheat in Modifids but once he got in the lead it was the Doug Greig Show unless he wrecked/was wrecked. That is why there are no more Friday nigt Modifides.
New York dirt modified, aero beyond just a spoiler., Type of Big Block Modified I've yet to see? (we run "common" dirt modifieds where I live) I actually learned about this matter since posting my original comment - when I initially posted I was unaware of the NASCAR Modified-style lexan spoiler. It's not the most visible thing in a video like this - I was under the assumption the sail panels were all there was. But even on a little track like this that would do a lot to improve grip.
Well what I mean is look at them during the normal season. 12 inch wheels The motors are a foot back the list goes on and on. I'm not saying they didn't during this race (although I don't see how they couldn't)
I been trying to find a car like 1 of these to buy i wanna race out at speedrome but i have looked and looked for these kind of modified cars and no info just dirt cars any body know where they sale modified cars like this r best place to look ? thx for any info
I want to get into racing the figure 8 cars. But everywhere i look to buy a figure 8 car that looks like these cars you cant find them. Found lots of dirt cars but they just don't look good and found couple but it looks like if you get hit in the side your dead lol Anybody know where the best place to buy a Modified at in Indianapolis Indiana. Thanks for any info
goodness i thought fig8 races were demo derby cars not suped up performance cars! kinda a silly idea to wreck those things but man they went for ages without hitting eachother!
@dmurphyi28 You need to start on oval first, this is so damn much harder then it looks like. If you have the money to buy a modified now is the time to do it. All you got to do is look up one of the drivers up that way, Tunney or someone will be able to point you in the right direction , people are sellin off cars this time of year. It's way too expensive and time consuming though. A good engine will set you back at least 10K, a really good one is 20K or more. Do roundy first for sure.
I know more than a few things about downforce, and I don't see how those things are supposed to help. The sprint car style top wings some cars have, yes, but not the upright panels on the sides...
The side panels are not for downforce, they help cornering and prevent the car from spinning. They work like the tail on an airplane to keep the car straight.
He is not. I am his neice and I help him build his cars. I know everything that goes on in that race with that cars. The only reason you are saying that is because your guy didn't win the race. Wanna see some cheaters look at them Rayburn cars.

One thing I've never understood about these cars; What is the purpose of the clear plastic on the trunk area? Is it just for the number?
