Visit your.heathrow.... to try your hand at identifying dangerous items in luggage going through an X-ray screening machine. It's not as easy as it looks!
I was taught working the 10 dreaded months as a pre-board screener that it was either a no threat, possible threat or definite threat. Few of these look like and were considered possible threats, like the hammer and dark objects. Now a definite threat if you see and detect like a gun, explosive devices, or even a knife. Continental airlines, they ran tests on us with fake grenades, guns ,knives and of course explosive devices. If you failed a continental test you would get suspended without pay if you failed an FAA test, your job and plus no more guard card to work other security jobs. This was back in 1993 and 94 when they actually paid us minimum wage of ONLY 4.25 an hour! I’m glad I got out of this to earn a good reference to get on with another security guard company that paid even better and worked at a much quieter environment!

Not a dumb question at all. A single book doesn't pose much of a problem, but a large stack of books or magazine can be pretty dense and cast shadows that might obscure other items in your bag, which could trigger a search. If a book was partially hollowed out to store something dense and metal, like a gun, it will absolutely show up. The TSA actually made passengers remove books from their carry-on luggage at a few airports as a sort of "test run," but it proved to be ineffective and the idea was, thankfully, scrapped.
Hey guys from a former TSA employee and still a big advocate of this. Please no SSI on this site. It is mentioned a few times and you need to be careful

No I don’t think so. I didn’t see anything suspicious about the phone so I think it’s just a phone. It’s just like smartphones. You’re not going to check everyone because of their smartphone. You’d see more if it was an explosive.

This is a load of rubbish. The objects are all conveniently laid out in the bag. it is not like this in the real world. The objects are not to scale.
