- We often hear an infectious groove and wonder "what is he or she playing?" We asked Vic Firth Artist Jost Nickel about his beat on "rave against the machine" by Jan Delay and Disko No.1 and he gave us the transcription! We've notated it and added it to the video so you can learn it too.
According to Jost:
"We don't use clicktracks - and no, I don't wear that suit at home!"
That snare sounds unearthly good
4:28 amazing side snare sound!!
I have once experienced Jost's "sound check" on a large festival. It was amazing, how he got the audience of thousands of people from the first beat. He is such a tight groove machine.
A guy making a whole stadium of people dance along to a cowbell while wearing a pink suit and looking bad ass while doing it...that's definitely something lol. I could listen to that groove for hours...and still not have any clue how to play it :(
You can learn to play the groove man, sure you could. That's the great thing about Jost Nickel is that he makes you wanna play!
Sure you could! It's written out, just read it one limb at a time, then add it together.
Single, double, double, single, double on da bell
This is the definition of in the pocket 👍😊
Woah, snaresound mit Gänsehautfaktor
What a groove ! Thank you Jost.
still love your drummer mr. Nickel!!
Unstoppable groove! I love it!
Thanks for the transcription. I LOVE this groove. It's slightly swung too....
I once was Jost´s drumtech for a weekend. Super nice guy and great teacher!
That was crazy awesome!
that set sounds really good, and so does Jost!
Absolutely lovely
Queria curtir cem vezes!!!Great job Jost!!!
jost nickel you're so fukin amazing..... you play this groove sooooo easy.... unbelievable awesome...
lol it took me a while to get it but once you got it it's quite easy....love it.
That is wicked!
It was a bit of a shock in the beginning watching the black guy going for the guitar and the white for the bass :P
This guy just lives in the pocket...
Groovey!
15 min intensiv gelernt. Beat jetzt in etwa hälfte der Geschwindigkeit die er im Video spielt gelernt. Mit der Hi-Hat.
Jost the groovemeister ; )
Bad ass GROOVE!!!
That snare though
Where are my drums....MUST COMMIT TO MEMORY!!!!!!!!!!!
This my friend is what they call...FUNK!
OK. I have to know where this is and where I can see the entire set/concert! Love that groove!
It's Gelsenkirchen/Germany, most likely at the Schalke Arena (Football/Soccer). Here's the answer, only 9 years later :-D
Those. Are some cool cats
search Jan Delay and Disko No.1 and find plenty
Awesome thanks Vic. No cowbell on 2 though only on the e of 2. Sounds lil funkier that way too, unless he's ghosting the cowbell with the snare on 2.
Larry Tate Hi Larry, there's a cowbell on 2. I know that for sure...I was there :)
Hey jost great groove. Oh okay I'm just not noticing it much I guess cause the snare is out mixing it here. Sounds great both ways, I learned it without. I'll practice with it in too. Thanks for sharing it with us.
How do like the sonor prolites? I'm thinking about that for my next kit. I just got into sonor when I got the Benny greb sig snare a few months back. Great drums :)
You just can't go wrong with Sonor Prolites. Amazing sound, very versatile. The Prolite shells are called "vintage maple". I have different Sonor kits and the one in the video is a SQ2 but the shells are just the same!
Awesome. I love sonor too :)
Does that opening groove a song or in one? I'd love to find out!
the metronomoman :D
richtig geil, könnte ich durchaus auch ohne den vokalbeitrag von j.d. gut anhören....
Groove x10000000000
groovee
Yeeaahhh
I read the title as Rage against the Machine
There an attachment pdf for the groove?
And we have Benny Greb on the keyboards.
Where can I see the entire show?
Nice, that word up they go into after the first tune?
Actually a mash-up of word up and a german rap song
Where can i go to see the entire show???
Never mind!
anyone happen to know the name of the snare? i know it's all about the mixing and tuning but i would still want to buy this particular sound XD
It is definitely a Sonor snare, and it is either a Bronze or Brass 14x5.5, I am leaning towards it being bronze
Sonor Prolite Brass 14x6
Since when did Boris Johnson play trombone
What's the song at like 5:30 as the video finishes? Or is it the same song? Haha!
it's called word up
Nope. It's "Türlich türlich"
....which is a german rap-cover of word up
Mash-up of word up and a german rap song "türlich türlich" by rapper das Bo
who's comprises the rhythm section? Mainly bass
Where was that Gig at?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veltins-Arena
No Gelsenkirchen, Germany
i can't agree more, but i personally think that there is something wrong with the overall setting. I don't know...
the whole set up just looks like mid 80s funk >.
My ears are great! But my eyes are bleeding.
Music.
Is that some version of a clavè?
Cowbell
Honza Lesňák I think Nicholas was referring to the "clave rhythm", not what Jost is actually hitting.
Okay then :)
Correct
No just a cool syncopated bell pattern over a almost linear groove.

Hab mich gleich hingesetzt und den Beat geübt/gelernt. Cooler groove, Band geil, aber das Gelaber dieses Typen stört massiv!
Lol
