  • In the heart of the Gordon River valley on Vancouver island lives a large Douglas fir named Big Lonely Doug.
And true to his name, he is a grand creation of nature and the sole survivor of a devastating clear cut operation.
As far as we know he is the second largest Douglas-fir tree in Canada after the Red Creek Fir in nearby San Juan Valley.
Doug was seeded around 1000 CE and in 2011 a logger wrapped a single ribbon around the base with the words ‘leave tree’.
This single act would prevent this giant from being felled when the rest of the forest was destroyed.
Doug was photographed and soon became a symbol of nature conservation in Canada.
Organizations like The Ancient Forest Alliance (AFA) are working to protect BC’s endangered old-growth forests and to ensure a sustainable, value-added, second-growth forest industry.
Giants like Doug should be left to live for future generations.

This brought tears to my eyes!
    Hi Dougie!
Very very few people nowadays, whether coastal Maine, South Jersey, or low mountains North Carolina, wherever in the US ... know that our primordial forests were felled in the last few hundred years almost entirely. And what you see from our highways and byways is just a ghost of the original forests which were felled and turned into a gajillion square miles of houses and buildings and furniture.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your comment Ray! I am only just now learning about the extent of the damage already done - definitely trying to help people see what’s happening so we can protect what’s left! 🌲🙏🏼

Wow - love your channel - such cool stuff. Can't believe you got that tub situated by yourself (those things weigh hundreds of pounds) - I know, I've set many. Looking forward to exploring more of your video's.

There's a tree here in Florida that I like to visit. I asked it what it's name is and to my surprise it replied, "Theodore!"
