  • After discovering a Bald Eagle alone in a nest on top of a Transmission Line stanchion a week prior, I set out to get a better look. I guess to see if it was just resting or was it an active nest. Had to go about 100 feet above the nest and descend down slowly in order to not appear as such a threat. If I was to approach strait on, I most likely would have lost my drone. Had an experience with a couple Ospreys this way. Really did not want to stress the Eagle out should it be in the nest so I did not plan to stay long. Turns out however that the nest is quite active. After looking at it on a bigger screen that just my DJI Goggles I had on, could make out something small moving in the center of the nest near the adult. Moved to get a final transition and started backing away and descending a short ways. Notice momma spread her wings and protect the hatchling case my drone tried to eat it. It is what happened next that I had to be careful of if I did not want to lose my drone. After I quit filming, I turned 180 degrees and descended rapidly away and to about 50 feet above the marsh grass and headed back toward myself. I would not recommend something like this too often. An Eagle will attack a drone if it feels it is a threat or even dinner.
