  • This is a review of the Southord MPXS-62 Lock Pick Set, the company's flagship product. The kit actually contains 69 tools and the leather case, making 70 pieces, not 62, and is designed as a dual-gage kit to attack both US and European keyways. $149,95 @ www.southord.c...

    SouthOrd was my first pick set purchase way back in the late 1970's when I was in the military. That is an amazing set, and your upgrades are perfect.

      William Mancel I never even knew they made commercial picks back then.🤔🍺✌

    • @WilliamMancel

      Don'z Lockz You know, you are right. I must have bought it after getting out because they were established in 1989 and started making their own picks in 1991. Old age is getting to me I guess. 🤣 I was sure I had some picks when I was in the military. Well, I must have bought one of their earlier sets, as it didn't have a model number on the case.

      I didn't know we HAD an organized military back in the 70s! What was it like wearing those heavy, long wool coats and funny hats? How heavy WERE those muskets? Did you get to ride a horse? 😃

    Nice additions to the kit. I especially like the spiral extractor. I keep one of those in my kit. Great for fishing out broken pick tips!

    My first commercial pick set was the little five piece Southord set that came with the Easy Pickings booklet. Four picks and one wrench. Used them for 25 years. Still have the short hook, half diamond and snake rake.

    Just want to thank you, sir, for your reviews and easy-to-understand videos. Like many others, I binge-watch all of your videos and try to learn something from every one. I took your advice and replaced my CHEAP Amazon-purchased pick kit by investing in this quality set. I even went so far as to purchase the recommended add ins. I look forward to my continued learning with BETTER tools. You said it...you get what you pay for. Keep up the great work. Stay safe.

    That's a very nice kit, but wouldn't .022 still be a bit on the thick side for euro locks? The praxis kit has .023 for US locks and .015 for euro locks....

    • @AlbertLebel
      @AlbertLebel 6 років тому +3

      BuzzinsPetRock78 I agree, that’s pretty damn thick. Reminds me of what we would find on Walmart website. HA!!!

    • @Chlorate299
      @Chlorate299 6 років тому +1

      They are a bit thick, the slimline profile makes them good for quite a lot of euro locks though. I used to use SouthOrd picks a lot before I swapped for mostly Sparrows.

  • @EnzoGuardino
    @EnzoGuardino 6 років тому

    Like many people here, Southord were the first real picks I bought, back in 2002. They are the MPXS 11 and 32. They are still going strong today and not broken any so far.
    Those two double-ended thin picks and some handle-less picks + twisted tensioner are in my EDC - a plastic Allen wrench handle that comes with some IKEA furniture kits, slightly modded, makes for a thin and light EDC kit.
    Good review, Bill, and a spectacular and unique giveaway after you gave it a turbo boost! 👍

    Kiitos (thank you) to Matthew Hall he told me about your channel.
    I have always like trying to pick locks, purely for fun and have made my own picks in the past.
    I find it satisfying feeling when I get one open, started in school helping my friends when they forgot there keys, had one friend give me a lock to open because he wanted one that could not be picked :)

    I'm not ashamed to say I'd cry if I got this kit. I've been looking to get a top of the keyway tensioner for a while but this would be a waste on me since I usually only use a hook or diamond pick. I don't even know where I'd start. Cool review!

    Nice looking kit, and nice upgrade Bill! Maybe I shouldn't be, but always find myself surprised that manufacturers don't often add the decoder knife to their kits, or a bypass knife for unshielded padlocks for that matter... basic tools yes, but VERY useful on everyday locks you run into. Maybe they just like to keep those in a separate "bypass kit"? Regardless, nice kit anyone would be happy with! Thanks Bill!

    Love your channel Bill. I have just recently "picked" up the hobby and give you so many thanks for being as clear as you can be, especially for a noob such as myself, on your explanations of lock picking. I particularly learned a lot from your explanation on tensioning. With that being said I've recently acquired a Almont re-key (sorry if it brings up any bad memories) and this lock seems to be my crux that I've only been able to open it maybe half a dozen times in 4 months. The pins, regardless of light or heavy tension, won't stay down once passed the shear line. Any advice? And you never show yourself picking it, most likely since it fairly easy (for you anyway) think you could fit it in on an episode? Thanks once again. This hobby, and yourself have help me more than you could ever know.

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  6 років тому

      Jose, because the Almonte contains only standard pins AND it is manufactured to fairly tight tolerances, it is very finicky about the binding order. If you pick a pin before its proper sequence in the binding order, it will pop back up and frustrate you. You MUST pick it in the proper binding order to be successful. Good luck! Oh, and welcome to the LockSport Tribe!

    Audio 100% perfect. Glad you got it fixed. What was the trick?

    • @bosnianbill
      @bosnianbill  6 років тому

      The ONLY change was to normalize the audio using the "normalize to maximum level" option instead of "normalize to EBU R128". YT actually RECOMMENDS the EBU R128 because it is the standard for broadcasting, but I read on some forums where others were having trouble with it and they recommended changing to max level instead. Must be a YT compression problem when converting to MP3.

    • @MikeF1189
      @MikeF1189 6 років тому

      I've never trusted R128. I always use the traditional Normalize. It's interesting that made the difference. I think you are probably correct about YT interacting strangely. Actually given your sound environment, you shouldn't really need to Normalize at all. I'm glad you got it going.
