Tha's insanely cool. Not saying that because it's japanese. But seing the scales fall off anf reveal the final piece is just magic. Thanks for sharing this!!
The old lady potter thanks you for the naked clay recipe. I"ll try that one and see what happens. (I specialize in small scale and miniature pottery, so naked raku technique may be a challenge on that scale if the slip doesn't come up the way you'd like it to. Potter for 50 years but still enjoying wonky experiments! )
I'd never heard of this! It looks so fun, and the end result is really cool! Well now I have another skill to add to my "try this out!" list haha ^-^ thank you!
would you share your slip and glaze coatings?? I use RIGGS 1 step process for slip, but , a lot peels off during the process, Do you use a two step process slip, then a Glaze? Thank you kindly!
@@WonkyWorkshop Thank you for your reply! what ratios are your second ingredients approx, and consistency of first slips is like Cream?? @60/40 got that!
MAGIC!.....when taken out of the kiln the pot has been heated to 900 degrees centigrade. Its in the sawdust for 4-5 minutes so has cooled down quite a lot. The water is ambient temperature. Whats cracking off is the glaze that was applied last due to the thermal shock. But the clay itself is a special raku formula. Thats as much as i know. Whats more impressive is that the Japanese developed this technique centuries ago!
@@heyimamaker Raku clay IS a special formula, with a greater percentage of inorganic additives: IE silica or grog (Pre-fired clay ground down to a fine sand like consistancy) that makes it more resistant to shrinkage and temperature shock (Because the grog has already been through the process, for example). It's way cool.
Great video, music too. Question please step nine. Did you say apply glaze? How long inbetween Applying slip did you apply the glaze ? Also did you remove the tape or just leave it to burn off. Thanks in advance
@@WonkyWorkshop Would be awesome if you could let us know, I’m also interested to try this. When you say “specific tape” what do you mean by that? Can it be just regular newspaper? Btw I love your wife’s reactions, that would be 💯 me too 😆☺️
Thanks for sharing, can't wait to try this technique. I wish you had not decided to add the background music though, I could hardly make out what you were saying.
Thank you. This is one of my earlier videos before i understood how to edit noise levels. The pieces that flake off just crumble away so no use unfortunately
Truly amazing Dan, never seem this before despite long time spent in Japan. Much, much better than my poor attempt at Shou Sugi Ban. The outcome, very coold indeed. From a technical perspective, cant understand why it doesn't shatter when hit with the water? thumbs up and shared!
Me encanta hacer raku y ver como lo hacen otras personas. Parece que sea fácil, pero tiene su grado de complicación...el humo, el olor... gracias por recordamelo
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate that and apologise. This was an early video and i hope i have improved a lot in the audio department since then.
that has got to be one of the most satisfying reveal processes I have ever seen!
Wow that was so cool! And the pots are gorgeous! Thank you for sharing!
That's an awesome process. Love how those look!
I like your kiln set up with it on wheels!
Our friends kiln.very handy to move it about!
Hey man, you did great. Very nice job on the pieces!
I have no idea what I just saw there but I do know this, it was amazing!!
Many thanks John, i thought so!
Coom man, never seen or heard of that before!

I had to resist adding japanese music....but i loved the metal sheen and the 'crackle' as the scales go

Greata video, but music while you are talking makes it tough for an old lady potter with bad hearing!
Really cool! 👍🏻👊🏻
wow thats awesome
thank you
You're welcome
nice, but isn't the pot first baked in a ceramic oven?
It does get bisque fired yes

No problem. Lady in our village does it. Was a lot of fun

Just made up from standard glaze ingredients. Slip is flint and China clay. Glaze is China clay, borax frit and high alkaline frit

@@grandcarriage1 Wow, I have never done any kind of ceramic or pottery before but it's so fascinating.
You said step nine you applied glaze. What kind of glaze did you apply?

Hi Kathleen, thank you. I will have to check my notes on the glaze but the tape we left to burn off.

NICE work. but couldn't hear you over the music at times. What do you do with the pieces that you flake off ? Any use for those ?

I think the not shattering is due to the type of clay used. But not entirely sure
Holy shit balls that is so cool. Thanks for sharing.

What is the recipe for the resist slip . Beautiful results
I will look it up for you 😊
60% China clay. 40% flint.
What is the recipe you use for your slip? What consistency do you make it? (ie heavy cream, half&half, or milky)
What is step 9
Thank you for showing us the process. Your music is too loud though. 🙁

Thanks Andy! Oh you mean the process 😂😁
@@WonkyWorkshop And the process!😂

Now that I've shit my pants in the first 10 seconds, let's continue..... 😅
I can't hear what you are saying because of the loud background music. pitty
