- I've had so many friends tell me that cross-country mountain biking is next big thing, so much so that I was convinced to buy one for myself. Join me as I talk through my XC bike, why I don't like it, and why I'm selling it after just 3 rides.

Number 1 mistake should have been putting on the blue Pit Vipers 🤣
I'll never understand why people wear those. They are hideous. Some people love being a cliche I guess.
On most they look funny but I’ve seen some people pull them off
Hahaha....someone beat me to the hilarious pit vipers.
I am 51 yrs old, you will appreciate cross country when you get older!
I and a few of my friends, who race xc, all got the TriFox MFM100 full suspension frame. We all had a slightly different builds. I choses fox factory 120/115 suspension with Eagle drive train, shimano brakes and Fox Factory SL Transfer, iCann carbon enduro wheels. I really love my build. The beat full-sus race bike I have ever owned. My friends feel the same way. I hope people do not get the impression Trifox is inferior because it is a cheaper alternative to Scott. It really is not inferior. My frame was clean inside and out. The BB was well faced, everything fit like a charm. I weight 200 lbs and beat the crap out of the bike. Holds up very well.
I considered those frames as well, but ended up going with the Lexon Riot (the same frame Eva Lechner rides/races) and built my bike last year. I've been enjoying every minute on it. Before deciding on sticking with an XC bike, I rode a trail bike and came to the conclusion XC was a better fit for the trails I ride the most.
If you anticipate that you will never crash your bike, or if you are a sponsored rider, then a carbon mtb is ok. But that also means that you are not really pushing yourself hard enough if you don't think you'll ever crash.
But if you do are actually pushing yourself, an alloy mtb is the way to go. I can trust a crashed alloy bike more than a crashed carbon bike. And even if the frame is damaged on an alloy bike, the frame is cheaper to replace.
@@sepg5084 A common myth. At this point, all my bikes are carbon. I race road, MTB, Cyclocross and ride MTB park.I do crash a fair amount and sometimes badly. There was only one time the carbon broke, and the hit would have put an end to any metal bike, aluminum, or steel.
i love riding my XC hardtail on enduro trails, i do like going uphill mind you, its a health and fitness thing for me, i also like being underbiked so getting to the end of a trail alive makes it all better :) but i do have a dropper post on mine, i'm not completely daft.
Glad to see you back mate!
I so agree with you on that! I bought 3 different bike before owning my remedy 8 and finally ride it every day 😍
I did regret buying my xc bike at the start because it just didn't feel capable enough, but after a while it became a big part of my riding because I used it as a commuter bike and it works really well for the things it's made for.
The one piece of advice I can offer when it comes to getting a new bike is to ride it a bunch early on to actually get used to it. I went from a 2018 Specialized Rockhopper to a 2021 GT Force 29. The first ride out I immediately had second thoughts that it was too much bike, but about a month later I got used to it and it unlocked a new level of speed on my local trails. Even the more xc style trails near my house are a blast to rip down. Every bunch of roots became an opportunity to find a small gap and off camber sections became just another part of the trail attack instead of being slow and careful. If I had given up on it 3 rides in I’d never love it as much as I do now, 9 months later
Personally I really like "under biking" or riding with an older geo bike or a cross country one, especially when riding with some less experienced riders. Makes it interesting!
Tbh I like underbiking because I'm already zooming past people on the only bike I have, a budget hardtail
@@makncheese6836 sure you do.
@@makncheese6836 9 year olds are people too 😄
@@radiocontrolled9181 the people I pass are the ones using like 7k yetis. Not to mention I'm literally a teenager and the only non adult on the pro line trails over there.
@@makncheese6836 Good for you it means that you have strong legs. And I can tell that you are American because you used the word 'literally'. Americans are all the time saying literally this and literally that. And another word too. 'Incredible' or 'incredibly'. Keep riding your bike mate 👍
The mistake is buying a bike that can do only 1 thing, enduro and trail bikes is the only bike you want if can afford just one
Do anything you want on a bike. Ive downhilled on XC . XC on a downhill. Your bike has a trail rating. You don't do class 5 trails on a class 2 trail bike, don't overload your bike. less your trying to get hurt but other than that have fun that's what its about. Hell i love to take my Yeti AS3 a full sup. down hill bike and cruze around down town....
Greatest comment I've ever seen lad. I ride my Bird Aeris AM9 at downhill races and chill trail rides. I'd even prefer to take my Stanton Switchback hardtail out for certain rides
@@David-qx8jm my full sus is my road bike
@@jsvnm ok
lol not if your riding to the shops or commuting
After riding xc hardtails for 25+ years, I found myself struggling to keep up with my friends on their newer, modern geometry bikes. After trying a few, I decided to build myself a slack, progressive, trail hardtail. I don't miss my xc bike at all.
Slack Hardtails are the best all rounders plus so much fun.
Couldn’t agree with you more. Life’s too short to Squirrel away things we don’t use! Great video 🤘
My wife complains I buy too many bike parts that I actually use all the time, but the InstantPot I bought her is still unused in the box for 2 years now.
Wow, I use my instant pot at least four times a week!
@@robgoffroad can you give my wife cooking lessons on how to use it? 😅⚓👍
Well, to be fair to her she didn't buy it (though if she asked for it then that's unfortunate), but she or you should definitely try using it. They're pretty great. Or if not then sell it I suppose.
@@TheCaptainsCog 🤣👍
Having the right bike for where you live/what you ride most is key. If I lived where you live, my bike stable would look a lot different than it does right now.
I bought an specialized epic hardtail as my 5th bike. I totally LOVE it, it is being used more than my gravel, city and steel hardtail bikes, from trail riding to commute to bike packing. It is so versatile that is becoming my favorite bike just after my trek remedy. I am in Seattle area btw!
Now I am thinking about selling my gravel bike XD
I love an xc bike with modern geometry and a dropper post. I can use it for commuting and gravel type rides. It's a blast on green and blue trails and can handle easier advanced trails. I see so many people at my local trails that are over biked.
on my local trails im over biked a little but i like to have a bike than can handle days at the park and long ‘backcountry’ type rides, as i have one bike only. 150mm works well for me
Solid video 📹
Wasn’t your first mistake buying an XC bike when you live in Bellingham? 😂
I bought a foldable bike around 9 years ago and it sat in my garage. I was missing a part and I procrastinated to buy it. Then this year, I finally got that part and started to use it as my secondary bike. In the future I will use it to travel soon. Better than not finding any use of it
totally agree with you, I prefer enduro riding over XC, but I know some ppl really like the xc riding too. Carbon hardtails seem like they're designed for speed going up/flat, not downhill. i recently bought an Marin alpine enduro and loving it so far, especially on technical DH trails
i bought my 6th mtb since the 90s this spring. no regrets. it fits right and rides great
As soon as I got my first full squish trail bike, the XC bike got slick tires and is now my road trainer for when I can't get to the trail head.
Have you seen the Trifox road bike cut down analysis? That carbon had design and manufacturing weaknesses all over. There was a section that had a big ball of resin pushed into a pocket by a bladder when formed. Looks don't equal quality so just consider how much a frame brake means where you ride.
The day I stop riding my XC bike is the day I quit riding bikes. Long travel full sus bikes are fun, but a short travel hardtail shows the real rider in you, and you can have fun anywhere.
I got a Mondraker Superfoxy and outside of DH tracks it feels like a waterbed, no feedback at all, I get back on my XC bike and it's all fun and games.
My first bike was a 2019 Santa Cruz chameleon and I loved it so I sold it and went to a Hightower and still love it but I do miss my chameleon
i mean I slowly upgraded my 4yo budget tour xc ht bike in to a Short travel trail/enduro bike as the OEM parts broke.
If you want to use that bike still, U can get a trans x dropper post for 180 cad on amazon and a manitou marchor fork for 250usd and convert it to 120mm. also Nukeproof horizon wheels are good for vibration dampening and come in package deal in chainreation for 400cad with tire inserts and sealant included. then again its only worth it if you are going to use it :)
I started off doing xc, after 2 months i was about to give up, found some jump trails near me and 2 years later im still riding, on dh and dj bikes now
Hard tails are still relevant in a few places like Bend, Oregon.
For what you have to ride in Bellingham, it’s like bringing a knife to a gunfight 😅
omg josh has a Honzo ESD too :0 i didnt realize that we had the same bike (although i built mine up from frame and its the previous year (red one))
LOL...😂🤣😂
Josh looks like a motorcycle cop with those glasses and that thick mustache of his...
We saw you at the top of SST a couple weeks ago on a Tuesday night ride but you took off before I had a chance to say hey. My buddy Shaun has the same last name as yours but doesn't believe you're related. I actually saw your listing for the Trifox on marketplace, solid deal for someone I'm sure it will sell fast!
Bummed I missed you man! Next time I'll try to stop and say hey!
@@DailyMTBRider 🤟
Wait! Before you sell it, think about what you'll be missing out on.. Like, walking around Starbucks with shaved legs, clip/clopping across the tiles, wearing spandex covered in logos from brands that don't sponsor you. 🤷♂
I mentally can hear the floor clicks now
I also have about four bikes i try to use as much as possible. Honestly its my city bike gets used more then any other to run errands.
Do a review on the maverick!
Trifox SDY20 climbs like a Billy Goat… but definitely doesn’t descend like a monster haha
I just sold a bike today. Need to sell more. Like.. right now
Haha so true - and that's when I realized it's not for me!
3:05 couldn’t agree more
i sorta did the same but opposite. I do a little xc racing but i moved to a beefy trail hardtail. I realize now after a few rides that I really miss having a "racier" bike under me. the new thang is sooo slow. I wanna sell it and buy another race hardtail.
My ex bought a recliner with massage and spent 4000 dollars.I was about to gripe when I realized I spent at least that on my blur.🚴
I have a rigid '18 Surly Karate Monkey kitted out for Bikepacking that also does day trail rides, in-town errands, urban short or mid-distance snow rides, bar-runs, urban commutes, and shortish road runs. The only things it doesn't do, i don't do anyway; no DH, Enduro, or DJ action. Not my sauce...
Cross country is about pedaling and gaining peak fitness . The HTA looks really steep ( modern xc bikes have gotten slack ) . Not sure if there is a dropper but that would end any fun going down . An entry fork isn't going to cut it . I don't think the problem is the xc mind set but I think the build itself ( mostly the frame ) just doesn't work for your riding and build . Hardtail are fun if you understand how to ride them and with that you have to ride them allot or you loose the feel of the bike . You win some you loose some .
I personally ride a Rockrider (yes I do) XC100S which is a 120mm front and rear down country bike, and it's not the most high end like it has NX Eagle, Level T brakes, Sun Ringlé Duroc 30 wheelset, Manitou fork and shock and Hutchinson tires, bought it for 1400€ and tbh I have tried a big enduro bike, a 2020 Trek Remedy 7 and tbh I just feel like underbiking spices things up a bit, all my friends be trying to convince me to get a big travel trail or enduro bike, and I'd certainly get one someday, but like I feel that when riding underbiked, I actually progress on riding and makes me choose wisely lines, here in the Alps, trails get steep and tbh I feel that underbiking is quite interesting and I do prefer, and that's my personal opinion at least, but yeah I should someday get a 150mm trail bike for maybe some bike park laps since Morzine and all those big bike parks are not so far from where I live
That XC bike may have been a mistake, but a second and probably more embarrassing mistake are those Pit Vipers.
Sadly I have a brand new Dirt Jumper that’s been in my garage for 6 months…never ridden it once.
Have an Orbea Occam 29er XC and I ride it on all types of trails. Probably because I'm too dumb to know or care about the differences. You do learn to be more discerning with your choice of lines, but it's never been a problem. I'll stick with the XC, I'm accustomed to adapting it to the trail and I hate heavy bikes.
Do you actually ride your bike everyday
The settings on that bike were wrong for you as a rider, you needed a totally different XC setup, 27.5x2.1, a thicker or actual mtb seat, and a little bit shorter handlebar, but, imperative, it's as if everyone forgot, the crankset, 2(44/30T)x9/10( 11-42T ), or even maybe with the older XT series triple setup 3( 42T )x9( 11-42T ), and then that bike, frame, setup, even look is a completely different experience, a proper XC experience!
Curious, what site do you sell your bikes on, or do you craigslist?
Facebook Marketplace and Pinkbike!
What grips are on the trifox??
What happened to your Ibis?
How much did you sell for?
The xc bike and gravel bike seem to fill the same role. So you had a redundancy there.
Trifox has good stuff. But you got to be ready for what you're getting in for though.
Can totally relate! Thought I would enjoy a much lighter bike than my Ripmo to take on longer "fitness building" rides here in Northwest Arkansas, so that the average terrain would be more interesting. I was lucky enough to borrow an Orbea OIZ and see if it was actually something I would enjoy. NOPE. That pedaling 1.5 mph faster average equated to exactly ZERO more fun, and on the descents, it sucked all the fun out of the climb I just made to get to it! Dodged a bullet on that one. Endorphin endurance high? Nope, not for me. Adrenaline high, where do I sign up? 👊
Derp. Adrenaline high! Sign me up! Derp
@@theymademepickaname1248 why not both ;)
Look at dem shades.
I think this happened because of the moustache. Maybe even because of the sunglasses 😎.
Your glasses kill me.
I love my XC hardtail ... and appreciate your honesty.
Still available for sale ?
Hey Josh, if you are looking for a versatile hardtail you should check out the Woodpecker Cycle co. “Billy Boy”.
Custom built steel frames designed and welded in the pnw
I loaned a bike to friend for several rides. He never bought one and I was left with worn and broken parts, which I replaced with my own money…
XC is boring, change my mind
(I live in the flat prairies)
You're not going fast enough than
Genuinely curious question, is it cool to turn around and sell something a company gave to you for free?
Great question - and the answer is it all depends what you have setup with the company. Trifox gave it to me with no strings attached so it's totally fine in this case.
Should be a give a way or charity raffle tickets 10 v buck each
@@DailyMTBRider I do wonder if they will again though?
I love hardtails. I ended up getting a brand new niner air 9 aluminum hardtail. Then went a little crazy upgrading it. It's such a addiction lol. Upgrades industry nine trail 1/1 aluminum wheelset. Nukeproof v2 carbon handlebar magura mt8 brakes carbon saddle titanium bolts. Running 203mm rotor up front and 180mm in the rear what a differences in braking power.
I have that bike and love it!
I have been mtn biking for over 30 years and have come to learn over that time, buy the bike that makes you want to ride it. Do your research first and foremost, especially at what type of trails are nearby and buy a bike that suites your needs, determine your budget, but be honest with yourself......Don't go and buy a DH rig if you're not physically able to ride gnarly stuff or you only have flat XC trails for example.
What dirt jumper do you have
NS
Looks like a sweet hard tail.
I’m sure we’ve all done that once or twice.
This was like watching a video of someone that put too much salt on their salad and then posted it.
After of course they told you of all the stuff they have.
If you don’t have the cardio just say that. Lol but yes get rid of any bike your not using, someone else can enjoy that bike.
Mustaches , Pit Vipers and XC bikes. Lols haven’t found 1 trend you have said no to huh 🤣🤣🤣. Make sure to pack a white claw on that ride 😉😉. I kid do what makes yah happy !!!
Those glasses 😂
cross country mountain biking! Since 1975...still the next big thing!
Do you have a 29ner on back and a 27.5 on front? Weird combo
I never heard of TRIFOX.
You got a gravel bike already. Pretty much just another type of XC bike.
Make it singlespeed.
Please may I have it i am a new mob rider and need it
Those pit vipers are a bigger mistake than the bike.
Can i buy the frame
Sure - it's on pinkbike! Hit me up there!
This frame is not like a trek, specialized or a Giant. It may look like it on the outside but I bet it looks horrible in a cross-sectional view. Those bigger companies have incredible R&D to make excellent mapping for the carbon fibre layout of the frames. You can't find a carbon bike of the same quality for $700, more like $1500+
Check out Hambini, he has examined the Trifox as well as ICON carbon frames and has very positive things to say about Chinese carbon.
Looks like it would be okay for flowy single track and Fitness
Sucks the company that gave you a frame got slammed in the thumbnail for the sake of clicks even though you said it was a great bike at the end of the video.
Worst bike I ever bought and absolutely hated….2018 Trek Domane SL5…it was like driving a bus, heavy and lethargic……
XC bikes climb great, are easy to carry, and suck at everything else.
The titles a bit misleading, it’s not a bad bike just not for you
I think the bike looks good though lol.
The first N - 1 I've seen that wasn't because of a wife...........
Why do so many mountain bikers have porn mustaches now?
Following a dumb trend. 99% chance they also wear colorful short sleeve button up shirts while riding
They all watched top gun. The beach scene really got them right.
The issue isn't the fact you got a cross-country bike, I have a cross-country bike and I shred black diamond enduro/DH trails. The problem is that you got a hardtail, they're not that ideal in cross-country races either 😳
XC = going fast sideways! Hahahaha 😆
You've now 2 HT's - pointless IME.
Wow, this dude is complaining and he has 4 bikes!
I can't even afford to buy 1 bike.. (Sigh 😓)
Try to get a used one - you can save a lot of money in this way. Simple bikes can sometimes even be found from scrap, last year I found a sort of teenager MTB there which was still fine after a technical overhaul at home
Well thats just like your opinion man 😆
Bahaha - We can all see your channel picture Chris, the Lycra gives away your true love of XC
El Dude-ah-reeno👍🤣
And again another clickbait video.... The contradiction between the title and what you actually say ( especially in the last part) is simply ridiculous.
Those glasses are hideous. Really. Just awful.
Hideous glasses :))) lose them quickly
