Thanks for that Rudi, sounds like you have a wealth of knowledge of the early stuff. RKO (I'm their producer and filmmaker). We have done an album of songs made popular originally by David De Lange in the 30's and 40's for Gallo, some good stories there too. Do you know Rob Alingham?
Interesting that Fred Michel is credited, I believe our research was that the song was traditional with Cape Malay origins (if I remember correctly). We sourced the original versions through Rob Alingham who worked for Gallo (De Lange's label) as their archivist. He has an extraordinary collection of the original 78's that he's collected over the years. He has originals of all the material we covered for RKO's album Nagloper,
