I can justify the issues. The finish is reminiscent of the military spec-ed era of Panerais to remind the user of it's "tough as nails, don't give a fk" heritage. Similarly, the bezel wiggle occurs due to the intentional use of low tolerances, so that it will be able to take a beating without popping off (like the AK-47).
In other words: iT'S NoT a FLaw, IT's a fEaTuRE.

Great video. I agree with you totally. I have a love/hate relationship with the brand. There are several problems with Panerai. First, their Q&A is terrible. When purchasing a new one you have to inspect it with a magnifier and have them open the case back. Second, Panerai has made false claims about their, so called, in house movements. Finally, they are extremely over priced for what they are. The watch you discussed should be at least half the price compared to other luxury watches (I.e., Omega seamaster and Tudor peragos). I’m also torn between loving and wanting one, on the one hand, and focusing on all their problems.

Not sure what is going on with Panerai anymore, but I had enough! Recently, Panerai damaged one of my watches on service and has still yet to resolve the issue. From sending the wrong size straps (how does that consistently happen?!) to the poor customer service received by their online concierge and the various boutiques I frequent....I AM DONE! Panerai will NEVER get another dime from me. Love your videos, happy new year!

The prices on mechanical / automatic tool watches are a scam since the 1980-90s. If you inflate the price of the original Rolex Submariner that originally went for $130 in 1950s, you would get something like $1,500 now. But no, the industry pulled the carpet under after the quartz revolution (that almost destroyed it) and decided to rebrand “tool watches” to “luxury timepieces”, a marketing trick. So here we are, with a $9,000 watch that has a wiggling bezel and a half-assed brushing on the case. You tell me, what we should call that travesty!?

  • @bensieber6960
    @bensieber6960 2 роки тому +1

Once you start talking about thousands (plural) of dollars for a watch you're into the realm of luxury craziness. I've seen finishing as nice as that on a Panerai or Rolex on watches that cost two hundred dollars, let alone many thousands. And mechanical movement hype is just that, hype. Sure, some mechanical movements may be somewhat precise and have great power reserve, etc, but they all pale in comparison to plain Jane quartz movements that can be had in a watches you can buy in a department store. So watches like the Panerai don't make sense - they are emotional and irrational and so Panerai can charge whatever they want as long as people will pay. That Panerai is wildly overpriced when considered just based on function and quality; heck, it would be overpriced at $800, let alone $8000. The same is true for all luxury watches and nearly all mechanical watches. The ONLY question is are you willing to pay that much for the style and label, that's it.

Great review as always, you're one of the best in the business. As for Panerai which I love and own, I've been thinking of selling mine because I just can't get over watches that aren't accompanied by great bracelets? Weird I know but I guess I'm just a bracelet guy. Also, at retail, Panerai are grossly overpriced from a value standpoint, however, on the secondary market, they're much better priced. I'm sorry but other than style I've never seen the allure of Panerai. I like the look but the quality and price point have never jibed. I remember reading an article in Watchtime reviewing dive watches and the Submersible had a deviation of 14 seconds a day! Then there's the controversy of their "in house movement." The Truth About Watches sates... “The new P.9200 caliber used in Panerai’s recently introduced chronograph family is a basic ETA 2892-A2 with Dubois Dépraz chronograph module,” I could live with all this if the watch were say, $2800 but it's almost 10K. It better have a great bracelet (it only comes in a strap). It better not have any functional flaws (jiggly bezel issues). I LOVE the look and how the 42mm case wears, but can’t get over how much it’s overpriced. Can I afford it, yes, am I stupid with my money, no….their quality isn’t close to the boys they’re playing against, but why is this? Why can’t they get their shit straight and make this truly $9k watch?

Can you service your Pam? That movement is too much. My 2022 Omega Seamaster have a little bit of rotational play and North to South play...but just a little bit. I understand Omega made that or any other Diver watch to have a bit clearance and make the bezel turn more easy but not too easy like Rolex Submariner.
I remember my Submersible bezel have just a little bit of rotational play, North to South play also, but just about right.
I used to have PAM 1312, PAM 682, PAM 233, PAM 425, PAM 275 all together. But to be honest my best experienced with PAM only with PAM 1312. Now i only keep my PAM 1312. I am clearly the wrong buyer for Panerai as $8,900 is ummm how do we say, way too much money for me. In fact, anything above $6,000 is way too much money for me. I could see myself at some point in the very distant future say it ten years when I'm 50 maybe possibly purchasing a $5,000 watch for myself, then again, probably I still won't.
These Panerai's keep increasing in price, and, yet not delivering the "feel return" needed for this price. From an artistic/design direction, it is missing something. From a value you for money, it's missing something. From a structural/solidity stand point, it is missing something.
Does it have the Bettarini design ethos? A bit. Does it have well manufactured parts? A bit. Is it cool? A bit. Is it a reliable ETA movement? A Bit.
And for $8,900 + Tax = $9,778.43 is it money well spent? Not for me, as I am not Panerai's target demo. I do not make enough money. It makes all of this a bit too much.

My VSF Panerai PAM960 replica is better finished then this. Look it up, they also have the PAM682.

Watches that cost 1/50th of that watch doesn't have bezel wiggle. You are surely not being harsh enough (and I say this as a Panerai-owner myself).

Maybe it's a feature like the Seiko I bought where the lumepip doesn't align. Seiko replied and said that it is a feature😁I will never buy another Seiko watch again.

Post questions about QC of PAM on online forums, Paneristis will tell you
    - case finishing doesn't matter, you're supposed to wear it rough
    - can you rotate the bezel to measure time? If so wiggling is non-issue
    - The crown doesn't turn smoothly when winding/adjusting, but can you set the time though? Can you? Be a man and suck it up
Panerai is a very unique brand with unique customers, all those qualities that general watch collectors look for are not appreciated by Panerai fanboys.

Sorry but not sorry… should not warrant that price and have that wiggle and non uniform finish… seriously I love the non bezel styles of Pam… haven’t bought one cause I am scared but for Rolex level MSRP that is not acceptable… for me

If a Panerai speaks to you, it does it with the full set of hand gestures. If it doesn't, then please shut up. $8900 ought to buy a luxury time piece, This isn't one. For me.

compare this watch with the submariner is not fair. market price of this watch is $8000 while a submariner is $17000, which is more than double!

So many better watches for a lot less money out there. $9000 for a poorly finished watch with a movement that hasn’t proven itself? Hard pass….for me.

Its not harsh. Thats a critical error. Sigh, Panerai. A brand I want to love but for this or that reason, I can't. Pricing is a big one. Their ever changing line-up is another issue thats annoying. Look at how the Radiomir line has been significantly reduced, for example.

The bezel has movement to allow for sand ,salt while diving and won't seize.

I have to say, my 1980s Soviet Amphibia did not have that much play in the bezel. The movement worked just fine for 30 years and still does. Really not bad for a watch I paid DM 40 for.
