For nonprofits filing 990-N, how can donors know or get information to verify the nonprofit actually spent donations properly as intended or expected by donors?
It is definitely harder to do. With a Form 990-EZ or long form 990, those returns eventually become public record at Guidestar. Not so with Form 990-PF. The nonprofit itself can get ahead of this reality by posting its financials on its website for all to see. For a donor seeking information from a small charity that doesn't do that, we recommend simply contacting them directly and asking for an annual financial report of expenditures.
