Hello. I'm a 15 year plus off gridder. I'm 55 years old. I'm retired Army. And have been doing most this my whole life. Yeap even most my years in the Army I was raising livestock and stuff. I now own 640 acres with my cabin in Southern New Mexico. My water is by rain catch. And I set on a small pocket of crude oil that's all mine. roughly 2 million gallons. Too small for any oil company. My rain is only about 2 hours in a year.. I use lead acid Deep cycle marine batteries in my solar system because they can be rebuilt. I use oil, propane for heat and cooking I also use a solar oven. I also have a big dehydration system. Powder by wind and sun ( the old fashioned way) There isn't much I haven't dehydrated. I would be happy to share how to do a off grid no power free dry method. That I learned. And would like for someone to make a video on it. I learned it by mistake and works with fruits and vegetables. I'm looking into a stand alone single burner electric stove and toaster oven. That will be powdered by solar. ( 120v with invertor) Because I forsee propane and other fuels going up a lot more. And I can only get 1 quart of crude at a time. in a old fashion wish well type operation. What a wonderful presentation. My wife and I are currently decreasing the electrical use in our homestead and are just about ready to cut the dependence on the grid and use exclusively our energy the solar power panels provide and propane gas. I might add, We will surely miss your lovely wife. My condolences.
I didnt get to watch when she was living. I just within the last year found these videos and New2Torah. Man this lady is amazing ! She is amazingly sweet. Watching her videos helps me see that I can do this too. She takes rhe intimidation out off of off griding. ❤
My tiny cabin is all-electric but I don't have a stove. I use my toaster/conventional oven, woodstove, and outside fire, and sun to do all my cooking and water heating needs. A hand pump for water and bucket compost toliet. French press for coffee and love my immersion blender. I still get by with minimal electrical needs.
You can cook anything in cast iron. It only gets rusty if you don't keep it seasoned. Use salt as an abrasive to clean it. When it's clean put it on a burner on the stove and heat it up to evaporate the water. Let it cool down and oil it with cooking oil.
I agree! I have used cast iron exclusively for over 30 years and have never had a problem unless it’s not cared for properly. I’ve tried the enamel coated ones and am not fond of them at all. I find that the food sticks easily and eventually the enamel chips, cracks and stains.
Thank you for this information. I'm newly off grid, 1 year and I couldn't have imagined how little I know. I love to cook and your tips are going to make it easier for me.
I live off grid. I don't use much electricity. I don't use a microwave oven either. I use a camp toaster for for toast. I use a pressure cooker. I love your videos.
hi! was watching you video and thought of a couple of things you might want to check out. both items are mexican cooking items which may be hard to come by, but not impossible - firstly is comal which is a flat cast iron pan that is thinner than a traditional cast iron pan, and thus heats very fast and toasts bread in minutes once warm. this pan can be used to make meats, pancakes, tortillas, etc on as well and they come in various sizes. secondly is the mexican pestle and mortar (molcajete) which is made from stone, large in scale and can make raw salsa in shorter time than it would if you chopped it up. the cool thing about the molcajete is that you can heat it up in the oven or grill and use it to make warm or cooked salsas and sauces too.
Hello from TN! I was raised as you live now! Dutch oven cooking is great! Cornmeal fritters in a cast iron skillet!! I still have most of my Mothers iron skillets, I have 2 Sisters, we shared! I can still make coffee in a percolator! But use an electric coffeemaker! Unless the power is off! We didn't have indoor water until I was 15/16 years old! I'm 67 now. Outside toilet until the same age. I guess we were "poor", but I'm glad I was raised that way! Blessed by GOD! I can cook on a campfire just about as good as on a stove, although I don't have to!! I wish I had a treadle sewing machine! Life would be complete!
@@lindaoehlke8942 Thank you! I thought it was funny that people were going back to the way we lived. I find the "Prepping" people are just discovering what a few of us have known about for most of our lives! I sort of feel like I have one foot in the past and one foot towards the future! It would be startling if the grid went down, but I feel that in a few days I'd be used to being without electricity. Not as convenient, but doable! I have a root cellar, fruit trees, nut trees, berries and more! I come from a long line of herbalists. Nature provides! I keep honeybees, chickens and rabbits. I think I'd like goats and pigs! I'm getting older, but not giving up! I will have a small greenhouse by spring! I have regular grapes, but I just received my Muscadine grapes the other day!! I have to get them planted!! Bee blessed
@@ritamccartt-kordon283 Have done a lot of what you are doing, but was in a car accident so I am now limited to what I can do and I miss doing all that kind of stuff!! But so nice to hear from someone who gets to do it!! I still can take care of the putting up of the produce we get but need someone to help (my hubby) bring it in, weed, dig, pull weeds etc. My favorite of all was doing the chickens = I LOVE chickens but can't do that anymore either. I miss it and enjoy hearing from you - puts me in touch with one who likes to do the same things. My kids have all asked me when I am going to quit and I tell them when I am home with the Lord that's when I will quit. They think I am old. I tell them just getting older - 72!! Just aging one day ata time same as they are!!
Try electric percolaters. When my die hard Mr. Coffee insistant hubby had yet another in his lifetime quit...I ended up researching electric percolaters. Inexpensive to operate. Very simple machines to easily clean. And the coffee smells like good ol' 'roadhouse coffee'. My hubby found one in a big box store on discount as it was missing the bottom part to sit the unit on. We used a stone like hotpad. Worked out nicely. My stubborn hubby was instantly converted. Used less energy and also less coffee grounds than the tanker mr.coffee. The unit shuts off immediately after it's percolation.
My mother had cast iron skillet which she used daily. She stated cooking in them added iron to your diet. Stove top perculators, coffee and grain grinders mills can still be purchased along with a hand driven blender. I sometimes wonder why these younger people just simple ask for advice from the older generation...they wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel.
Immersion blenders make great smoothies and it’s quicker if you are doing more than one. Put ingredients into Mason Jars (wide mouth) and immerse the blender into each one. I would not be surprised if it would not use less power than the bullet for multiple smoothies.
great video. something else that works well with a dutch oven is, put your small dutch oven in a preheated larger one. it works just like an electric slow cooker. have a great day
I can't believe how similar our kitchen uses are~we also live off grid, but we don't have solar, but in the evening run a generator. I use the same 3 electric items when needed using the generator. I also use a 'hay box' to cook like a slowcooker and I use the wood stove for cooking and for drying things. I really enjoyed this video~
Hello from Northern Australia! I use my crockpot insert in my solar oven. I removed the plastic knob off the lid so it doesn't melt. Sure, it takes longer for the insert to heat up but I just leave it in the solar oven all day and it has worked out perfect every time. My solar oven has been a very good investment.
I got rid of the thin glass and plastic added lid to my crockpot. Went to the thrift store, after measuring the size...a bit to large like 1/4 or 1/2 inch and a cranberry colored lid,, doesn't have a vent hole like the other cheapy lids which for me is useless. I figure the heavier lid is more energy efficient.
A few years ago we cooked all of our meals in Michigan during the month of April in our Solar oven. Back then I used a 60 30 solar oven like the type Maria Telkes of MIT developed outside but recently I got a vacuum tube solar concentrator and found I could actually cook inside the house with my solar oven on a sunny day.
Good to see you enjoying these things, like a blender, and stuff people might forget are kind of special and fun. Living in the woods kind of, things like blenders, toasters, coffee makers are more fun, something like play, when they are known as not so necessary. Me and Dad, we used the coffee drip cone, and liked the electric coffee maker too. My Dad was so happy to get a toaster. He got a blender when we finally could get a blender, and he made good stuff with it. These are meaningful to us, to me, meaning we are together, signs of Love and beloved. Whatever you have or don’t have, life is wonderful when there’s the one you Love.
New sub from Elizabeth City NC. I've been fully off grid for close to 2 years now. Can't afford electricity or running water. I cook and heat using bottled gas, and bring in water for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and toilet use. It's really liberating to know how to go about doing things like preparing meats and veggies so they keep without refrigeration. Through other channels, and locals, I've even learned how to make mayo that will keep for close to 2 months without having to use refrigeration. During the summer months, I've even made a permanent rocket stove outside so as to not heat up the house. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Welcome back to UA-cam. We have missed you. Sorry can’t go to other platforms cannot afford it but UA-cam is where we like to watch you. Keep up the good work. Keep living the dream. God bless
We are 2 generations past remembering how things like toast were made before electricity. Thanks for reminding us that there is a better, simpler way. My instant pot will always be my #1 electrical appliance. It does so much more than pressure cooking. I got rid of my yogurt maker, steamer, slow cooker, and electric roaster. My instant pot does all these things, and when it's hot, I take it to cook outside so my kitchen stays cooler.
Like u I love my insta pot. I have 2- 3 qt. I use 1 daily for steamed or pressured GREEN veggies cooking at 1 minute with a quick release. Also have a 4 qt, 6 qt & 8qt. St. Patrick's day ex: 1 pot for corn beef, 1 pot for potatoes, 1pot for cabbage. I for cooking 30 hard boiled egg at a time. Makes food prep and clean up easy.
What a lessón for us all. In just one yr...Everything as you know it can change...our whole world can be lost. Im so very sad for her family, sad she had to endure this horrible disease. Wasnt she lovely! Just sweet kind beautiful...
Ive got the same coffee setup. If you throw some coconut oil in the pan with a thick slice of sweet bread, then top off with a little evaporated milk and cinnamon, its like stovetop bread pudding.. Yummy.
These are the things I kept electric, too. Grainmill, blender, handmixer and an old electric coffeemill for my spice mixes and dried mushrooms. We don’t have Lehman’s here in France and I find my old fashioned equipment on yard sales.
Oh my goodness, as this is my first time watching you, when i saw the hand pump at the sink I was instantly transported back my grandparents kitchen. She had the pump at the sink. We use to visit every summer and the summer of 74 was huge as that was the year they got an indoor washroom.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We are transitioning to being completely off grid, and you touched on some things I was curious about, especially the crock pot!
I like my French pressed coffee. I live off grid, too -but with very little solar. We haven’t had a fridge for over 6 years. We do a lot of fermented fruits and veggies in the summer.
Great video, Jamie it's great to see you getting more comfortable in the videos..this one was informative and cool to see..thank you for sharing.. I'm also a huge fan of your outdoor kitchen and pizza oven Zack and your dad built!! So glad y'all are sharing videos on UA-cam again!!!
EXCELLENT - EXCELLENT TIPS AND VIDEO. Newbie here. Heading out to Ozarks end of March to begin off grid living. Gotta be thankful for finding your channel. Gonna binge watch probably all night now. - A really good channel for " instant pot " recipes is -PRESSURE LUCK. Very entertaining guy from New York . Actually the very town I was born in. Thanx.
(Naomi Shubert) I use a coleman camping toaster and it sits over the open flame on the propane stove I use. The advantage is you can toast 4 slices at the same time.
Instead of 'microwave' i use 'steamowave'. I place a large dutch oven pot on the stove, add a bit of water, put a ceramic trivet on the bottom...then put my plate of food on the trivet. It steams fast! Careful getting the plate out without spilling it or burning myself. So I discovered the Chinese plate lifter- perfect!
Let's not forget the old 1930's - 1940's hand crank mixer! Love tools from the past. Old whatnot shops have many simple tools, and rural barn sales do too. Aloha
You need hubby to make you a hay box. Its like what you are doing now with blankets but a little more efficient. Modernized hay boxes are insulated (happy dance for rigid insulation!). The nice part is, you can put a cushion on top and it doubles as a sitting stool. Towels are used instead of the blankets.
We simply use thermal cookers --- stainless steel pots with insulated or vacuum cases. We bring the pot to a boil on the stove every 8-10 hours. It can cook for days or even weeks, if we are doing bones.
I've been saying this for years...boiled coffee (also known as cowboy/campfire coffee) is the best. Just add coffee grounds to boiling water, boil the coffee for a few minutes, then set the coffee aside for about 3 mins to give the grounds time to settle to the bottom. Trust me, you'll taste the difference. By the way I love your kitchen ❤. Its so bright and cottage-like. Thanks for the vid.
I love this lady! Please make more videos showing us your life as a homestead mom/wife. You are living my dream life. (My husband is not willing to give up city life).
Love the tips! I enjoy when you showcase how you get through a day off grid. Can you please posts links where you can purchase appliances and how the solar is setup.
my choices are : sun oven, home biogas digester (for cooking gas which means no propane refills so totally self sustainable and off grid), dutch oven, wood stove you can cook on, outdoor clay oven, manual appliances except a food processor, mixer, 12v freezer, 12v fridge, long stem blender. outdoor smoker, solar dehydrator,
We are on grid so we have a few more things in our kitchen but I use our off grid gadgets more often. Financially it wouldn’t make us sense getting solar since our power bill is so low because we don’t use it much otherwise we both would like to have solar. Love love love our wood cook stove. Thanks for sharing and inspiring others like our family. Shalom!
Good morning. Glad to see you guys on UA-cam we miss you on this channel but it’s understandable why you are doing videos elsewhere. Blessings to you all. Merry Christmas and happy new year
Well it is 2 years on now so I imagine you have a few more devices by now. I live on a boat, but do not want to compromise on living style, but at the same time I try to make everything work off 12 volt batteries. I do have 240 volt but I like to have a low voltage solution. The grain milling is interesting, I’ll have to look around for a very compact one of those. As a blender I use a 12V battery electric drill with an adapter I have made to the various accessories that go with the mixer/immersion blender/smoothie maker. On my gas stove there is a grill … or what America seems to call a broiler, but I do like skillet toast. Pressure cooker, yes. I only started using one recently but it is a whole other world. I’m still exploring what I can do with it. For lighting in my galley I use a Ryobi 18V battery power tool light so I can see clearly while working. I haven’t got one yet but there are chargers to recharge PowerBooks from car batteries. I do admire your low tech off grid determination, but I draw the line at the bucket shower. I love my longish hot shower and have a battery powered pressure water system for the shower and tap water with a 45 litre hot water cylinder which is recharged from either diesel or the log fire. Water consumption is equally important on a boat as I operate of 480 liters of tank capacity, and that is water I have to find to refill.
Immersion blenders are awesome. I've been trying to get all the things together for making soap. The only thing left that I need is an immersion blender. It's the one thing that is a most expensive to make soap or use it in your kitchen for preparing other things. I've been watching your channel for a while and enjoy the cooking part. Thank you for awesome videos take care and God bless. Deb
Just started watching your vlogs......very interesting.....being a younger child in my family I was never around my grandparents much so am always interested in that generations' environment......

Tip: clean your enamel Dutch oven with dollar store denture tablets. You may have to repeat(use 3-5 at a time) but it works well.

Amazing
I buy denture tablets at the dollar store for: vases, anything enamel, toilets, glass coffee pots.
Mel Rey oh. I didn’t know that. Thanks.
Or sodium percarbonate (oxygen bleach in powder form) would work well too
Magic bullet, you can get a shaker jar with a ball spring, for smoothes.

Awesome!! Iwas raised the same way and like you said "Guess we were poor" but the thing of it is I didn't know I was "poor"! God bless you!!!
So looking into living off the grid. Everyone I've spoken to have said it's the best idea and now I'm sold in taking my family and our cat with me.
Immersion blenders make great smoothies and it’s quicker if you are doing more than one. Put ingredients into Mason Jars (wide mouth) and immerse the blender into each one. I would not be surprised if it would not use less power than the bullet for multiple smoothies.
great video. something else that works well with a dutch oven is, put your small dutch oven in a preheated larger one. it works just like an electric slow cooker. have a great day
You are truely blessed. Thank you for sharing the possibilities.

So cute.
Off grid living is all about a positive attitude
It is also gratifying to live a simpler life style using your brain.

So much awesome info, thank you Jamie RIP dear angle.
I do enjoy your videos. You are a well spoken and intelligent young lady.
Such a great video and great lady.
Your article in Torah Sisters was very inspirational and Spiritually practical. Thank you for sharing your faith.
Welcome back to UA-cam. We have missed you. Sorry can’t go to other platforms cannot afford it but UA-cam is where we like to watch you. Keep up the good work. Keep living the dream. God bless
Met your wife today in this video. Such a sweet sweet lady, full of grace and beauty.
Thanks for your happy disposition, and information.
Such helpful tips ! Thank you ! I have never wanted to hug someone through a screen before ! She is just adorable ☺️
What a lessón for us all. In just one yr...Everything as you know it can change...our whole world can be lost. Im so very sad for her family, sad she had to endure this horrible disease. Wasnt she lovely! Just sweet kind beautiful...
Love the kitchen, laundry, cooking, and gardening, and processing and storing food videos. Thanks
Really blessed me by watching this. You seem so sincere. A nice quality video
I have a cast iron dutch oven and after every wash, I rub it with vegetable oil. This prevents rusting.
i too,am so happy to see you back on you tube, you look very nice and healthy welcome back
Ive got the same coffee setup.

This is the EXACT video I was looking for!
I gripped at my husband for buying ANOTHER gadget... Until I used the Emerson blender. I LOVE IT!
Oh my goodness, as this is my first time watching you, when i saw the hand pump at the sink I was instantly transported back my grandparents kitchen. She had the pump at the sink. We use to visit every summer and the summer of 74 was huge as that was the year they got an indoor washroom.
I love your kitchen!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We are transitioning to being completely off grid, and you touched on some things I was curious about, especially the crock pot!
thank you. good to see you again
Love to watch your videos Jamie. You have such a calming nature, it’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing. 😊

Coleman makes a camping coffee maker that is just like a Mr. Coffee except you use it on a gas stove. Works really well.
I bought a propane Coleman coffee maker, love it
I like my French pressed coffee. I live off grid, too -but with very little solar. We haven’t had a fridge for over 6 years. We do a lot of fermented fruits and veggies in the summer.
This just popped up on my feed. RIP dear lady 🌹💔
Great to see this angel again! Nice to learn about these kitchen gadgets.
A French press coffee maker will save you a lot of time and its off grid. I got mine from Goodwill. Love the Dutch oven!
I use the coffee sieve too! I found a metal sieve that fits into the funnel so I'm not having to buy filters. Love it!

Geoffrey Shubert I loved my old camp toaster. Multi grain bread smelled great on it.
Great information and charming presentation 👍.
Aloha
So happy to see you again!!!
What a blessing you are.
Great, great video Jamie. So glad you guys are back on UA-cam. Big ole thumbs up on this video! LOL
Thanks for the tip on the difference between cooking with regular cast iron and enamel ware.
Jaime.. You look terrific..love your kitchen videos
We have one. We have done videos and an article about it before. We use a cooler.
@@Anamericanhomestead srry, didnt see the vid on it. Arent they awesome!?!
We simply use thermal cookers --- stainless steel pots with insulated or vacuum cases. We bring the pot to a boil on the stove every 8-10 hours. It can cook for days or even weeks, if we are doing bones.
Thank you for your happy disposition! Was a pleasure watching your video! :) Keepsm:)ing!
Your kitchen seems so peaceful. 💛
Toast is great with butter in a cast iron pan.
A wood stove is great for cooking on the surface. I think most people don’t go far enough off grid.
I love this lady!
Please make more videos showing us your life as a homestead mom/wife. You are living my dream life. (My husband is not willing to give up city life).
So glad to see you guys on here again. Love your videos!
Love the tips! I enjoy when you showcase how you get through a day off grid. Can you please posts links where you can purchase appliances and how the solar is setup.
my choices are : sun oven, home biogas digester (for cooking gas which means no propane refills so totally self sustainable and off grid), dutch oven, wood stove you can cook on, outdoor clay oven, manual appliances except a food processor, mixer, 12v freezer, 12v fridge, long stem blender. outdoor smoker, solar dehydrator,
Jamie, you explain things so clear and consise . Thank you and Zak for producing such good quality in your videos . Courage, Barbara in Maine
Thanks guys,
This vid resonates with my values.
So beautiful!
So charming. Thank you.
Deb
No toaster for many years because we prefer the cast iron toasting method😀

Lehman's catalogue is a nonelectric catalogue and is awesome!! I have their dough maker - Love it and is so easy to use!!
Just started watching your vlogs......very interesting.....being a younger child in my family I was never around my grandparents much so am always interested in that generations' environment......
there is a manual blender out there, but for small batches the immersion blender is great
This video was fabulous! I love watching and learning from you in the kitchen. So wonderful seeing you again. Please make more video, you are great! Hugs❤️
