Hey, sanket. I had the exact same problem so I switched to wall sconces throughout my house. I live in Delhi, and I purchased some very simple stainless and frosted glass sconces. Price:
1. Rs. 150 for a single bulb sconce
2. Rs. 250 for double bulb sconce.
I use 12 watt led bulbs supplemented with table lamps and other indirect concealed lighting like led strips under my wooden cabinet shelves and such. When you remove the mounting brackets for the tubelight, there will likely be a color difference between the covered space and the surrounding wall. You can get a small container of white paint and a bottle of whatever color stainer you want (acrylic distemper paint is cheap and good for 1.5-2 years) and try to match the wall. This is quite difficult so I recommend just repainting the whole room before installation. It will only take you an hour and a half depending on the size of the room. Painting itself takes little time.
Expect 10% breakage with the cheaper sconces, however, even when fsctored in, they still come out much cheaper.
My costs:
1. 10 single and 6 doubles = rs. 3000
2. 22 12-watt bulbs = rs. 3950
3. Paint + stainer + brushes = 2,200
Total : 9,150
I've noticed a %15-%20 reduction of my electricity bill, which is about 3,500 a month. That's a saving of 525-700 rupees per month. In just one year, I save from 6,300-8,400 which almost covered the cost of this project. You can say that my actual cost was 2 or 3 thousand rupees max.
