What a fucking wizard - really cool to hear him talk about his process and approach. Saw Surgeon play in Brisbane (Australia) quite a few years ago now. A bunch of us fronted the cash for his flights and accomodation and he came to play one of Brisbane's shitty little clubs which is pretty awesome in itself, was a total face melter of a night.
Edit: In case people read this far, go find Surgeon's Glade Festival mix from 2006, it's a delight.

What a story, those are the gigs that artists truly remember. I had a friend doing something similar with blues artists across the US coming to play in his backyard. He had total legends coming through and they all loved the relaxed and intimate setting of his garden.

40:00 had the same experience playing Krautrock live, and it´s definitely because people like the unexpected, live factor; it feels more real, and when these moment happen where it all connects and a good track forms out of the impro, then the audience feels the magic of the moment, and is a part of it - much more than with a fixed set of rehearsed songs.

I only heard of this guy today. I really appreciate his philosophy of working with the machines and listening to what the synths are saying. Not being too set in what he wants to hear, but sort of guiding the music. I've been interested in this approach for a long time- what does the guitar want to say? What sound does the synth seem to like? I found some new techno. It's a good day.

30:00 ish, I totally agree.. The worst thing to happen for DJ’s is the disappearance of 1210’s over the years. To collect and play vinyl took a certain amount of commitment, dedication… and that applies the same to modular analogue.

As a techno producer I have always wanted to explore the modular world, but am terrified of it bankrupting me. After looking into what I want, the minimum price for entry into the hobby seems to be around $5000 (for a proper techno set up, at least), and thats considered cheap in the modular community. How are you (modular people) funding your builds? Genuine question. Ive always been curious, considering most producers and musicians I know are very poor.
