    About 2 years ago I started researching my DNA and my ancestry. I was shocked at the results. First, I found out that one of my direct ancestors was killed in the Salem Witch Trials. Then I discovered a lot of Northwestern European ancestry. I knew I have a ton of English ancestry but had no clue about the Scandinavian heritage. I dug deeper into that and was able to trace back to some direct ancestors that were Vikings in various areas in Northwest Europe. Pretty cool. I also found distant relationships to some well known historical figures, including some unsavory ones. My True Ancestry was one of the tools I used and once I learned how to use it was a great resource. For a history teacher like myself it has been amazing to see my family history!

      Wow thanks for sharing! It's so exciting to link our ancestors to events in history (the good and the bad). Salem Witch Trials and Vikings are both exciting finds. It reminds us that these stories aren't just about distant people and times, but about our own families. Thanks for watching my video ☺

      Yo I got Scythian as well, and would you know where that would come from, on my yt I got my vids on it, would the Scythian come from east European cause I got the same percentage on my heritage dna as on my true ancestry, or could it have come from the Middle East? I always wondered about that part of my lineage. I am mostly of Mexican decent with North Native American, British/Irish, Ashkenazi Jewish and Afrolatino admixture. I have Royal lineage to the Arpad Dynasty which is the same area and tribes you mentioned! I am trying to see the connection and read that the Arpad Dynasty male descendants ended up in Austria in which spread to France and Spain. Then on top of that one of the males from the Dynasty is said to end up in Scotland with the Drummond clan. So Eastern Europe spreaded all over the place. Most of them are in Poland and Hungary and are Polish and Hungarian. I come in the mix and ended up being Mexican generation later. Like more than 10 generations later. I am not an expert and there is so much more I left out but it all makes sense now. As far as being a history buff I am going to the Frida Kahlo exhibit in my area which as we all know a famous Mexican Artist. Her father was of Hungarian decent. Interesting! There are so many connections!

    I noticed my Gedmatch DNA matches with this Mytrueancestry. I am mostly of Native American decent along with Spanish, Askenzi Jewish and British ancestry sprinkled in. Through this I found out my European side didn't become Spanish until the year 1100 AD. Before they were an amalgamation of Gothic, Hun, Baltic, Indo Iranian and Turkic tribes. Amazing!

    • @ellesilverwolf4571
      @ellesilverwolf4571 2 роки тому +2

      @@jesusslushies2192 well it tells you how many SNPS you share with these groups--- like actual DNA snips and the percentage of relation that makes you .. if you know how to read the results then you aren't fooled into thinking that you are massively close... it also tells you the time period that those matches were alive... if you just have some sim I lar generic European DNA then that of course just means you share a common ancestor... if you have actual segments of DNA in common and are we closer than 4 or 5 to them then they were your ancestors.... I was not foolish enough to think that I was closely related although being fro. The De LA Poer, Powers, Lawson, and other family lines I already knew I had connections to them from my genealogy and historical work... like 1000 and 500 years ago our family lost our lands etc for following the Jacobite cause etc.... depends which branch you look into but Elizabeth pretty much banished several of my ancestors and etc... the results I got were in line with known family history now that I have found my father's side .... I agree though that unless you know how to read these results they can be confused.

    The only bummer part about MTA is that if you are Northern European you are not going to find very much global variety in your results, even if you purchase thousands of samples. This is because of the overwhelming amount of Northern European samples in the database. Also, often for one archaeological site there are many samples and they are all related, so that also takes from your sample allotment.

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland  Рік тому +1

      MTA have samples from all over the world, but if you are Northern European then it makes sense that your samples generally reflect that area. Not sure why that would be a bummer though, plenty of fascinating populations in Europe!

      @edfred Рік тому

      @@VanessaBland I'm American. I already have African and Native American samples at MTA, but overwhelmingly they are European. I also have some "ghost samples" on my Americas map (I already figured out one is Amerindian from Mexico and the other is Iroquois from Canada). But to truly unlock these more distant samples will have to pay for a lot more samples (possibly 1000 or more). That's what frustrates me. I know there is global diversity in my DNA but my sample matches (I'm up to 1500 now) are bogged down in Northern Europe. Out of 1500 samples, none of them have more genetic distance than 15.

    I recently did a DNA test and I've been trying a few websites, but it' so... inconclusive?
    I share a few cm of some of my chromosomes with people and samples all over the place and in different eras... It's really hard to track or make any sense out of it.
    I'm Brazilian and my grandma is Indian (that gives me: 22.8% Mesoamerican and Andean). From my grandfather and father's part of the family, I don't know much about it.
    The rest of MyHeritageDna results are: Iberian 61.2%, West Asian (Turkey and Iran) 6%, Italian 4.8%, Irish Scottish and Welsh 3.5% and Baltic 1.7%. On modern populations at MyTrueAncestry I got basically: Portuguese, Spanish and North Italian.
    Closest ancient population: Illyrians.
    The ancient sample breakdown shows 20 different 'people', while the ancient deep dive shows five: Gallo-Romans, Romans, Illyrians, Al-Andalus and Phoenicians.
    There're matches with: Oetzi, Crusader Knight French/ Lebanon/ Tuscan, Le Mans Revolutionary France (H46, K1c1, H79a), Viking Age England, Skeleton Lake, Roman Gladiators, Guanches, Carolingian Empire, Ancient Britain, King Louis XVI and Jean-Paul Marat.
    So... What does it mean? What do I take from that? Any lights?
    It's curious to me what I don't have according to MyHeritageDna: 0% African, French, German, Jew, English...?

      You have an interesting mix of results there! None of these ethnicity tests are a perfect science though. They use algorithms based on modern populations, so it is simply making an estimate of where your ancestors MIGHT have been from. MyTrueAncestry also compares your DNA to ancient samples and looks for whether you share anything with them. It doesn't mean you're necessarily descended from them, just that you probably share a common ancestor. I hope this helps! Thanks for the comment :)

    Hey Vanessa, I really liked your video. It was interesting to see your results! I did the test as well, but there´s one thing I do not understand. For me, my closest ancient population is also Saxon + Frank (2.975). However, when I look at the ancient sample results (full civilization breakdown and ancient sample breakdown), Celt is the biggest (30.3%) while Saxon being 19,5% and Frank 5.76%. I do not understand this, am a most Saxon + Frank or Celt? Perhaps you understand how to interpret this? Thanks in advance!

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland  2 роки тому

      Hi! Thanks for watching :) Sounds like you have similar results to mine. I also have Saxon and Frank as my closest, but in the breakdown section, my top two are Saxon and then Celt. I think the breakdown is a lot more similar to an Ancestry breakdown, where they are looking at single populations. Whereas the Ancient populations seems to be the most likely combinations of more than one population. The distinction here is tiny but if you've ever used GEDmatch Oracle, it has a similar technique (I have a video on Oracle if you want to check it out). So perhaps if your DNA sample is compared to all of their results, you most closely match the Celt sample. But assuming you are not absolutely pure Celt, you're a person who has mixed ancestry (as we all do) the combination of Saxon and Frank is the closest match. Does that make sense?
      I should make a dedicated video to this question, it's a good one!

    I didn’t like the Y-haplogroup section. I thought it was very basic. My Y-haplogroup is R1a-Z93, yet I was disappointed that R1a was third highest. Y-haplogroup J was my second highest match, which I believe, as I know many males in my family tree had J2a as their Y-haplogroup. I was disappointed that they didn’t break down J into J1, and J2. I am also disappointed that they didn’t provide subclades for each haplogroup. R1b came in highest at around 25%, whereas as J was around 23%. I am highly skeptical of this, as I don’t know anyone in my family with this Y-haplogroup. On the Living DNA family matches only one person, out of over 1500, has R1b as their Y-haplogroup. Apart from R1a coming in at third, my Y-haplogroup pie chart resembled that of a pie chart relating to Southern Italy. I was only interested in seeing R1a-Z93 percentages, given that that is my haplogroup.
