Just a note for r1 g1. If you let Mycosynth Lattice resolve with floating mana you can Cast Out Karn. Lattice turns Cast out into a colorless permanent that can't be sniped by Ugin
1:36:30 Convert the Bosejiu into a treasure, use that to cast Replenish? If it resolves you're in a great spot. Obviously if they force it's not good but you were dying to force on the Swords anyway.
One thing about m1g3: since they were only on 6 life because of their Tombs, the correct line probably was to use Cast Out on Ugin and attack them with the 1/1 shark. That would leave them at 5 life and they wouldn’t be able to tap both Tombs in order to play Lattice.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that at 19:11, opponent wouldn't even be able to search for a Wastes since Bosiju requres the land to have one of the basic land types.
Another note for M1 G3, I feel like the blind cycle before the ponder in hand is bad. I would argue that ponder first is the correct line for more looks at possible outs. In that case it would've flipped flooded strand and 2x force of will, but you couldve also flipped bad cards with ponder and shuffled before cycling to draw a blind card.
I love the sky turtle so much. This shell seems really great for it too, so I'm excited to see how this plays out. I'm wondering if there is enough flexibility in the mana base to support Urza's saga as another way to find Currency Converter and progress the board state under a standstill.
Just went 3-0 at FNM with turtles this weekend! There's actually an amazing combo in NEO limited with turtle and the green spell that buys back an enchantment and creature. You can slowly pull every creature and enchantment out of your graveyard, forever.
Awesome video. I never realized how powerful the hard cast shark typhoon was until I beat sneak and show by putting it in off of show and tell and beating a griselbrand with it. Sweet deck, might have to give it a spin soon. Awesome video as usual!
For r4 g3 on the turn you cast the converter couldn't you have just cast replenish to get 3 turtles and a shark tornado, then path making another 1/1 off of it, or even just pass the turn after? And please correct me if im wrong but sharknado felt very under valued for quite a bit of the video. Most of the time ive seen just getting it out for 4 with replenish could have been game ending if not super powerful?
32:09 you cycle cast down blind, then ponder.... I know it is a small percentage, but saving the cycle till after the ponder gives you just a tiny bit more variety and choice on what you get. In this particular instance it mattered cuz you would have been able to force, blue card. Of course I have the power of looking at hindsight but I know you tend to make the most optimal plays and this seems like a small improvement that you could do.
After watching the matches, Currency Converter seems absolutely bonkers in this shell. With all of the channel and cycling abilities available to you, keeping them fed to give you a constant stream of rogues didn't actually seem all that difficult. I wonder if it's possible to lean even farther into that theme. Run the Urza's sagas to find them as well as additional copies. I also wonder if you could meld it with the Asmo cookbook package (ThrabenU ran a deck just last week with Currency Converter and the Asmo side of stuff). I'm gonna look for some other options that could be good too.
Restoration of Eiganjo maybe? It's an enchantment, so it plays well with the Hall and Replenish. It fulfills a similar role to Timeless Dragon, in finding another land, but the second chapter could let you turn a card into a dead currency converter, a popped standstill, or just pull a land out of the yard to ramp you a little bit. And, since you are discarding that card, if you already have a currency converter out, it'll also get use there. Drake Haven and Dying to Serve are also decent enchantments that let you make creatures when you discard. I don't think either of them are as good as currency converter though, and at 3 MV, they are a bit expensive.
I'm a bit late to the party, but yeah, Currency converter looked sick. I'm leaning towards cutting Replenish and Sky Turtle and Cast Out, because all those cards seem really clunky by themselves. Looking at the video, it's not that likely that they'll all come together to win the game. Ten years ago that combo would have been sick, but nowadays the benchmark for four-mana cards is something like Jace TMS that just wins the game by itself, with no setup or bad support cards required. Without Replenish and Sky Turtle and Cast Out, you'd have room for e.g. more Standstill and Urza's Saga, and possibly a few Prismatic Endings or planeswalkers. Without cutting the Replenish package, I'm not sure what you'd cut for Urza's Saga.
Currency Converter in multiples is great! Activate one and put the card behind the second to "process" it immediately for value. I just played Reeplcheep's LoamPox list this weekend for the first time (long time LoamPox player, but new to this build) and just discovered this while playing. (Sorry if you discover this in the video, but I'm in round 1 of the vid)
If someone names wasteland turn one off of a needle or spyglass, especially if they don't see one on board or in hand, I'm putting them on post or a fast depths deck 100% of the time. They are the only decks that play 4 of that card main deck.
In game 1 round 2 when you Boseiju'd the Cloudpost you said "Let's see if they have a Waste in their deck". You can't actually get a basic Waste from Boseiju since Waste is not a basic land type. I had to learn that the hard way from playing Eldrazi Tron in modern. This is why the E-Tron decks in modern play 1-2 basic swamps.
19:09 you said “we can see if they have a waste in the deck” but I don’t believe you can get a waste off boseiju. If boseiju said to search your library for a basic land, it would work. But instead boseiju says to search for a land with a basic land type. And weirdly enough, I don’t believe basic wastes have any land types. Like the Domain mechanic can only ever see 5 basic land types because wastes have no subtype
@@BoshNRoll After reading Boseiju again, and yeah it would seem that since Wastes are only Basic Lands with no Sub-Type they can't be searched. It makes me wonder if WotC did that on purpose or not...
@@ShadowReignhart Technically yeah? they wanted to have colorless basics, but a fair number of cards care about the number of different basic land types a player controls. So in order to keep those cards balanced, they didn't give wastes a basic land type.
I love how worried you are about the construction sounds, I have never once noticed them, and when you warn us each vid, I’m always wondering if I’ll notice.
The turtle + standstill + replenish + currency converter interactions make my brain do good chemicals and man I hope that's good enough to keep showing up
At some point I was considering asking you to play something with Replenish. I'm surprised that someone else did. I had worked on trying to get Saproling Burst + Pandemonium, which I played in type 1.5 back in 2000 or so. But I didn't find anyway to make it work that actually seemed worthwhile to do in current Legacy.
At 31:50 when you mentioned you needed Blue card + Force I was thinking perhaps you should Ponder before cycling since this would let you set up what you draw off the cycling. I know normally your line is ideal if you are digging for one card but here since you needed 2 different cards it seemed better set up with Ponder. Wouldn't have changed the outcome probably but seemed interesting.
Aren’t the blue and white channel lands also good removal? What if you use those over some things like Swords to Plowshares and such? Not four-ofs, but a way to keep the standstill going.
There’s so many powerful things to do in a Standstill deck these days that it usually cracks within a turn or 2. Playing 3-4 mana effects that are worse than 1 mana effects just in case there’s a standstill is a mistake in deckbuilding. Play the cheap card that stabilizes the board and gets you to a standstill position.
You could at least have tried to cast the replenish at least three separate times in the last 2 turns of round four. They might have countered it, but if they don't you win and if they do you aren't in any worse of a position than losing the game a turn later like the line you took did. They didn't have any counterspells face up, and you delaying multiple turns just lets them draw 2 cards a turn towards counters, while you are drawing one card a turn towards veil and dying on board. Even post bosejui you could have used the treasure for the replenish.
I totally agree that Standstill/converter is the primary engine of the deck with replenish and cast out merely being convenient tools that fit well with the converter plan. Do you have any suggestions on what you would slot in instead of those? Other cycle/channel cards? More variety of discard payoffs? As a counter point I thought there were multiple games where replenish was a major threat and his opponents had to have specific threats (like grave hate or counters) to prevent it from taking over the game. And Cast Out was one of the reasons that replenish was such a threat. It's a 1 mana cantrip that often made a creature on its way out, and was a threat at removal from the bin. Maybe Bosh is too skittish of spending 4 mana on one spell to actually cast it up front (which I think he should have done on 1-2 occasions to deal with walkers), but that's more about his playstyle of "draw is always better than anything else." To be fair, that mindset is nearly always correct. Draw typically IS the best thing you can do. But I think it can be tunnel-visioned a bit too easily.
With all the standstill I kinda want to see a standstill only tournament. Minotaurs, turtles, sharks, seismic and whatever other janky standstill thing people can do.
This seems like a deck where a Yorion variant is worth exploring. Animate Dead is an enchantment, and 20 extra cards would give you room for more silver bullets and let you think about Life From the Loam.
Why run just 1 supreme verdict in the main? I get it’s an out you might not otherwise have, but as a 1 of, how often will it actually make a difference? Not criticizing, genuine question
Cantrip heavy legacy decks can get away with playing high impact one-ofs. You don’t want to draw them often or early, but you can dig for them if you want them.
It hurts because the deck is mana-intensive. You neither want to tie your mana up making constructs nor have your land die after 2 turns. It’s just not what we’re doing here
I feel like there are not going to be many decks where 3 is not the right number of CC because you do need it as early as possible if you dont have fast mana which also just opens it to being removed. Then the feeding into itself which you picked up on makes the second one atleast mediocre. And even 3 at the same time can work if you aggresively discard from your own hand. Once they are in play you cant counterspell them and discard with bounce does not work well either that just sandpapers 2 pretty prevalent colors in magic.
This is like the Legacy version of SaffronOlive's "Standard Living End" deck that dumps a bunch of Channel creatures into the graveyard and then gets them all back with Brilliant Restoration.
Some day I’ll be great enough to be playing shitty magic when Bosh will walk by, and I’ll tell him “Yes Bosh, I am losing super badly, but least I look and feel smart doing it.”
