I visited that In 1986 with the _Trinitas_, a Lochin 33 twin that the Newhaven Harbour Master used. We were taking a bloke out to it. It was pretty heavy seas (to 12yr old me...) and seemed a long, Long way away.
Off of Eastbourne. I've just come back from a few days stay in Eastbourne and asked the landlord of the b&b I was staying in if he knew what the structure was. From the seafront all you can see is a cross like shape. Now watching videos to see it up close

Gosh, from Newhaven that would have been quite the distance, nearly 20miles. Even with calm waters from Eastbourne I didn't have very good sea-legs!
I'm pretty much sure that that wooden walkway went the whole way around the lighthouse at some stage.
