My new garage needed 50 trench blocks. At £7 each I though the cost too much
Then I saw you guys use them. I’ve now paid the money and got them ordered.
Nice one 🧱👍🏽
nice to see brickies doing the job as it should be done
Thanks pal 🧱👍🏽
Monster of a job. Crappy previous foundations, huge blocks, dodgy hips, roasting hot weather. Who would be a brickie! But you two guys seem to make light of it all and get the job done, no matter what. Thank you for the editing and uploads Steve - I'm feeling for you with that hip. Onwards and upwards.
Thanks Dave much appreciated 🙏🏽🧱👍🏽
Top job. I've got visions of you both dressed up as ancient Greeks to do the square root calc. Just what would Pythagoras have made of the smart phone 🤳. Look forward to the next one.
😆😆cheers John 🧱👍🏽
Hi Chaps. It never ceases to amaze me how much ‘faff’ you encounter, yet you just absorb it and get on with the journey. I take my hat off to you both. Great to see Alex pretty much up to speed now with his solo brickwork, well done young man.
Thanks very much 🤜🏽🤛🏽🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild its because you are professionals
Cheers 🧱👍🏽
Great job Steve n Alex really cumin on look forward to seeing nx video 👍👍
Cheers 🤜🏽🤛🏽🧱👍🏽
Another brilliant video boys, thanks for that I'm only glad my tine didn't have those monster blocks I know that at 77 I'll never have to use them. You seem to have caught up well done looking forward to the next. Best regards Ken
Cheers Ken , they are heavy but great to work with 😁💪🏼🧱👍🏽
good to see you guys work as a team, lot a difficult job but as usual you get it done ,looking forward to next video
Cheers Jack 🧱🧱
great video steve, thanks. sorry was repairing daughters laptop.
get well soon mally
No probs, thanks Pat 🧱👍🏽
Hi Steve & Alex. Hard bit behind you. Now for big finish. Great job as always guys. Have a good weekend 👍
Thanks pal you too 🤜🏽🤛🏽👍🏽🧱
Always a pleasure watching quality work.
Thanks Steve 🧱👍🏽
Evening guys just catching up. Hopefully catch you on Mondays live😊
Nice one 😁🧱👍🏽🤙🏾🤙🏾
great work again men do not get too hot and drink plenty of water in this hot weather take car and thank for the video
Thanks, will do! 😁🧱👍🏽
Love the way you guys work. Even drill the muck instead of the brick like me. I always learn something from You and the family love is humbling. Casio G 5610 is last watch you guys will ever need. Perfect.
🤣🤣🧱👍🏽
Ooooo snapped headers.! Reminds me of a job I did years ago in slough for the council, footing were poured at the wrong level ( not by me I’d like to add 😊) so the only way was to put in snapped headers to get us to correct floor height. Clerk of works went ballistic.! Had to remove brickwork and concrete topped.!!! Bloody nightmare job.!!!
Jeez..... as the saying goes the bricky will get over it 🙄🧱👍🏽
Great vid fairly coming on brilliant stuff.👍👍👍😎😎😎
😁🧱👍🏽
Looking clean and tight as usual 👍
Cheers Kevin 🧱👍🏽
Great job as always to you both 👍
Thanks Anthony 🤜🏽🤛🏽🧱👍🏽
Excelente trabajo saludos 👍👌💪👏

Hi from Nevada, I really enjoy watching your videos, can't always understand your accents 🤔 I have worked in my Pa's construction business for a number of years along with my two brothers and I see a how he like you have treated each other with respect, our projects are a tad larger than yours but same obstacles seem to arise , I smile at the amount of times you say "well time for a break" keep up the great content. By the way I think Alex should end the vlog with the quote "This is the way"
Oh cool, thanks for watching , a bit warmer where you are too 🥵.
Al is a massive Star Wars fan so I will put it to him 😁🧱👍🏽
Nice and neat 👍
😁🧱👍🏽
Great video!
Thanks 🤜🏽🤛🏽👍🏽🧱
Just built my extension using the 350 blocks. Wider cavity = Extra Costs are adding up. Wider lintels. More insulation ect.
Exactly mate , it’s coming to all of us 😬🧱👍🏽
Pretty pointless on older builds
Because the rest of the house, 90% of it is still explusing heat at the same rate it always has.
@@SteveAndAlexBuild so true. A real pain ATM. I found certain wall ties were not quite long enough even though stated as 275. Pre-finished Sill boards are now harder to find.
Building inspector was helpful though and a bit more flexible than my past experience.
I intended doing brick, 150mm full fill rock wool 32 and block. But found out from the inspector I would need additional 25mm insulation on the inside to meet the code. Ended up using 100mm celotex in the cavity. Not cheap
No that stuff is ridiculous 😫🧱👍🏽
I did a extension on a relatively new build, when the existing foundation blocks were exposed, they were fractured. Why? I can't tell you, but, I've never been happy building a building on an airated moisture sapping block. We do foundations in concrete common bricks. Yes, I know you have to cavity fill etc etc. Those lightweight blocks will not stand the test of time. My bricklaying crystal ball has served me well for 36 years.
🧱👍🏽
It's all coming to plan, although I don't get the new regs just now, it's all just adding to cost. Somehow makes no sense. What am I missing? Great layout as always guys. Keep it going. Onwards & upwards as the saying goes. 🖖👍
The regs change again in 2025 😬👍🏽🧱
great video love your tools your using
Cheers, they are brilliant 🧱👍🏽
cheers 🧱👍🏽
Mint job lads 👌
Cheers Buddy 🤜🏽🤛🏽🧱👍🏽
Fab job thanks for sharing
Thank you! Cheers! 🧱👍🏽
nice job
Cheers 👍🏽🧱
@steveandalexbuild great video guys, really enjoying this build. Serious question (not a criticism) is there a reason that Alex bedded the trench blocks without full coverage? From what I can see the 2 lines or mortar would struggle to cover the entire 350mm block.🤔
We never put a full bed under trench . The beds need room to spread . They are Rock hard to get down with a full bed plus there are only beds where there are walls above 🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild thanks for taking the time to respond 👍
No problem. Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏽
i did wonder this too. more from a point of if regs are bigger blocks then should it be a tripple line layed in. again a question not criticism. only if you pulled one up you would know the percentage coverage. things like big tiles have funny things go on underneath. also do you wet the concrete down first. cheers
The wall is wider but the two 100 mm skins still only sit on each side with a 150 mm cavity where nothing sits above 🧱👍🏽
Grey video! Can I ask which brand that yellow handled rake thing (sorry don’t know the exact name!) at 0:40 is? I’ve been looking to buy one like that.
Thanks pal.
Roughneck . Got ours from Selco 🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild Thanks a lot!
What was the benefit of the trench blocks other than save you putting down one extra row of blockwork?
Saves cavity fill too below dpc 🧱👍🏽
My thoughts are is it not going to increase the risk of cold spots where the new regs meet any old builds especially like my cavity is 50mm
They haven’t addressed that 😫🧱👍🏽
Do you guys ever put half courses below the door when the DPC is higher than the FFL? So the door threshold is level with the floor.
A few times 🧱👍🏽
I'm not a bricklayer and this confused me. Do you mean cut the bricks so they are only half the height so there is room to sink the door threshhold down to get a flush threshold? I'm struggling to get an answer on how to achieve flush thresholds
Another hard days work lads.
Very John 🥵🥵👍🏽🧱
The wall starter which was fixed onto the render. The render should’ve been hacked off, so the wall starter would’ve been fixed fixed directly to the brickwork or block work, which is over behind the render for a structural fitting as the fixings will only go in a little bit if you keep the render on
🧱👍🏽
Thanks Steve and Alex, I've got a job this week gotta use these blocks glad for the info. Concerned about the weight as Alex mentioned. Take care great work as ever⚒🧱👏
Good luck Chris 😁💪🏼🧱🧱🧱👍🏽
👍
🤙🏾🤙🏾
You need to learn the memory function on your calc, then you won't have to write stuff down on walls.
Its written down so people can follow along or even pause 🙄
Bung it in , let the plasterer sort it out 😊
🤨🧱👍🏽
That first row of blocks is only resting on a strip of muck at each longitudinal edge, is that ok by the regs/inspector?
Yes, that is where the walls sit above 🧱👍🏽
But surely it makes it weak in the middle of the block. If it was to break wouldn’t it tip to the middle ?
They won’t break and the cavity is in the middle where there is zero weight on the block
Not even joking when i say, between you and steve and izzy the other proffessional bricklayer on yt, i reckon you 3 could build a house that would still be standing in 2000 years time, think about that .
😁🤜🏽🤛🏽🧱👍🏽
Maybe I'm a bit thick but that foundation is so shallow I cant work out why you are using a trench block.
Quicker than 2 concrete blocks and cavity fill 👍🏽🧱
Yes boys , how come your not just using 90mm kingspan ? Can keep the normal size trench and 100mm cavity
Because it’s ridiculously expensive and we don’t like building the internal first 🧱🧱👍🏽
Jobs are getting ridiculous cost wise nowadays but just get on with it while the work is about, we normally hack the render of so we can fix the wall starter to the bare Bwk 👍👍
Very true Andy and yep school boy error on my part 🫣🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild Not an error Steve, ive seen loads do it i just think its a better job to bare brickwork👍👍
Cheers mate . Hope you’re well and got your van sorted 🚐🤞🏼🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild All good thanks mate👍, the van got written off beyond repair replaced it today actually with a little Ford Transit connect. The price of vans now are ridiculous but I got lucky with this one and saved myself around 4k, more details in a future Vid 👍.
Nice one, look forward to it 🧱👍🏽
If the trench blocks get any bigger it won't be long before you are building pyramids.
Plinth blocks😂
🤣🤣🧱👍🏽
Walk like Egyptian!! 👍
🤏🏽🫴🏽🤏🏽🫴🏽🤏🏽🫴🏽😁🧱👍🏽
Sooner or later the footings will have to dug wider to accommodate all this bollox.!! Looks good lads, looks like the hip is giving you grief Steve…
Top Class, did you hear about the pregnant bed bug? she's having a baby in the spring
🧱👍🏽😫😫😫
They trying to get rid off the old blocks lol
What’s the price difference lads ?
Firwood who we deal with are very cheap , not much difference 🧱🧱👍🏽
Don’t think Alex would make a very good HIAB operator, by the block stacking! 😂
🤔🤣🤣👍🏽🧱
Do you mean the floor slab need to go to the outside block?
Not sure what ?
@SteveAndAlexBuild there was comment about slab going to the outside block...might be mistaken 😊
Always in the doorways , no exceptions 🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild but not on normal walls ? That's what I though :-)
@@SteveAndAlexBuildwhy is that? Interested to know. Been a subscriber from the start, sure you will have explained in the past.
Great content!
I wonder how my house, built in the early 50s, has managed to stay up ..nice and solidly, for 70 plus years without all these extra feckin regs.
Exactly ! 🧱👍🏽
How long before we are doing 400 wide walls 😅
They are Ireland 😬🧱👍🏽
@@SteveAndAlexBuild so not long before it comes to out shores 😅😅
Nope 😬🧱👍🏽
I always thought gauge went 525 600 not 575 maybe I've been wrong for 25 years 😂
😬😬🧱👍🏽
there is an app called triangle solver
🧱👍🏽
Why didn’t you put the concrete to gage you not have snap eders them
We explained exactly why in the video
This is where the cretins did not think this new gap through and new regs for all, are ridiculous, 150mm cavity meets an old cavity with an undetermined gap.
😬😬🧱👍🏽
I think you can still go with 100mm cavity as long as you use insulated plaster boards on the inside
Like how do you join up the new 150mm cavity onto a house like mine that has a 50mm cavity without creating a cold spot
🧱👍🏽
@@martin2466 Research 1930 semi's and Victoria houses, small cavities! Solid brick walls have a U-value of around 2.1-3W/m² and adding 50mm of expanded polystyrene (EPS) will take the U-value down to 0.5W/m²k
The right numbers just not necessarily in the right order 🤣🤣🤣
Mmmmm 🤔🤣🤣🧱👍🏽
not buttering those blocks then? ;-) bet Superman could
🫤
350 wide trench and boy is putting two tiny beds of mortar on the edge?!
They are full beds under each wall . Not sure if you know this but here is a secret when the block goes down the mortar spreads out like magic 🪄 🤗
@@SteveAndAlexBuild bollocks🤣🤣
@@SteveAndAlexBuild 15.25 just watch
I don’t need to watch I was there
@@SteveAndAlexBuild No way did the mortar spread out that much, you could see it squashing out an inch from the side. There would be hollows under the blocks and perps, bad practice indeed.
Hi lads why did you cut the half’bricks ?and not lay full bricks length ways. Thank you
We did it to change the gauge 🧱👍🏽
Watching the crane unload brought back memories of when a truck would arrive and tip it all out, leaving you to handball it all to your job 😂 having said that, all you needed to do was offer cash in the nearest pub,and you'd have labourers in an instant. 😂 ,👍🧱
Yep I remember that too 🥵👍🏽🧱
