44 second video that saved me a plumber call and was also entertaining. Kudos to you sir
I almost called a plumber before watching this video. I fixed it. Thanks for teaching.
My house was built in 1954 we bought the house in 1998. When we moved in, I went to turn off the water main and the gate valve knob broke off in my hand. Soon after fixing the broken main valve I replaced every valve in the house with ball valves. Contrary to what most people think ball valves do leak from the packing nut sometimes. You showing this is needed on UA-cam because a lot of UA-camrs don't live in reality and only like to show the up side of a job. Thanks
You rarely get to fix something for free, so this one is almost a blessing
❤
I'm going to replace some gate style shutoff valves in my basement soon, and I bought new ones to replace them. Are ball valves better for some reason? I could easily go exchange them.
This was exactly the cause of my leaking ball valve.
Thanks for making the time and effort to create this video!
Glad I could help!
❤
This was exactly the issue my home's leaky main valve HAD. I was able to fix with your video. Thank you.
BTW, I did call plumber from 'reputed company' in Charlotte before I watched this and they charged $89 for diagnostics. He quoted $620 to change ball valve (needed!) and pressure regulator (recommended!). Without the regulator it was about $580. I was also told the leak might increase considerably if not fixed quickly. The price blew me off, so declined the fix. This is nothing but cheating and lying to customer.
Thank you again for saving my hard earned money !! Subscribed ! 😀
My main interior shutoff was leaking, making everything else more difficult. Easiest fix ever. Thank you.
This is awesome! I had a leaky Apollo valve that looks just like that and quickly tightened it after watching this video. No more leaks. Simple fix and thank you!
I thought I fried my brand new ball valve 1/4 turn spigot or something, was leaking right out of the top. Had a feeling there was a fix, sort of felt dumb missing the obvious heh. Snugged it up and no leak. GREAT to-the-point video, thanks! Also your channel looks to have some good practical homeowner knowledge, subbed.
The simple fixes seem to be rare in life, but I'm sure glad they exist. Happy to help, thanks for the sub!
short, informative and funny. 10/10
Fantastic! Straight and to the point. Subscribed
Even easier than I thought, I figured a rubber washer was bad.
Thanks. It was my first time soldering pipe and I thought I had gotten it too hot. I didn't want to have to replace what I had just finished.
Worked perfectly. Don’t even have to shut the water off. Took one minute. Thanks!
Awesome video, thank you!
Great information! Thankyou!
Thank you very much. 👍
wow it really was that simple! Thank you for the video! Saved me lots of $$, time, sweat and tears!
Great tip.
This worked perfectly for my needs
Favorite kind of fixes 👍
Worked for me, thanks so much
Wanted to say thank you for sharing. It worked for me and stopped the leak on my 1/4 turn!
Awesome, I'm glad!
Let’s go!!! Just did it no more leak!
Now I can fix the ball valve and the building am working. It’s just tedious because it’s a small space and I can barely see the valve. But this helps me out a lot. Thanks
Worked thanks for the video
I just installed 4 1/2" RELIABILT ball valves with drain and they were good in the off position but as soon as I opened them, 3 started leaking at the handle. The 4th and 5th(different brand) are going to be taps for something in the future so I cannot open them to test unless I put a cap on it. What a bunch of crap for something brand new. I was able to tighten them OK and stop the 3 from leaking. Was 10mm and 12mm for the nut sizes. I hope this never happens to the one that has the handle thread locked or epoxied. Thanks for the video.
Did the trick. Thanks!
THANK YOU!
Thanks, this helped me slot
amazing🎉 thanks for the tip
Wow. Thanks man
Thanks ur video saved me a plumbers call out....
YESSSSSSSS thank you!!!
Thanks.
Thanks!
Much obliged, thank you as well!
Thank you for this video. This video covers a ball valve leak from the stem. But what to do if the leak is inside (allowing a small trickle through even when fully closed). Thanks for any updates!
Unfortunately, nothing straightforward I can think of, depending on the type of ball valve. In my case it's soldered in place, so I'd just replace the whole thing. If it's a ball valve that's attached to the pipe with compression fittings, you could shut the water off for the house, remove it, disassemble the valve like in the video below, and there's a chance the ball valve is dirty or has hard water build up, so it may be possible to clean it. ua-cam.com/video/m0tBH0KNi7U/v-deo.htmlsi=6cecuuVVCehQe0cl
Thanks so much for the reply. It makes me angry that the valve would fail since it's a new (4 year old) ball valve that's only thrown twice a year (connects to outside hose bib, cold climate). Is this type problem common? @@Bootstrappin
Yeah, that's really unfortunate. I don't know, but that does sound too soon. It could be sediment clogging it, it could be (if the valve was soldered to copper) that too much heat was used during installation and damaged the ball valve, maybe a manufacturing defect, maybe freezing if it's located really close to the outside. An autopsy for the old valve is your best bet so you can figure mitigation strategies in the future.
Sometimes this works but in the case of a 3/4 inch ball valve with a nylon washer I have to replace it
Man, was looking at a new $55 valve and a few hours to swap it out before I caught yur vid. Took me 2 min to fix the leak. Thanks bud!
Edutainment!
Saved my ass. Thank you.
you da mannnnnn
😎
Shut the water meter off, New ball valve going into the house shut off, new shut off valve closed below the toilet, new water level valve in the tank and still water got through all 4 closed valves. What! water still going passed four closed valves ! Water company advised installing a pressure reducer valve between meter and house shut off valve. That worked.
I think I love you : )
❤❤❤
I got a NIBCO 1" ball valve upstream from my meter. if I need to stop the water I've got to get the county water authority to come out. This valve has been leaking out the stem for quite a while because the leak severely rusted the handle and there is calcium carbonate all over the outside of the pipe below the valve. NIBCO doesn't want you to get into the stem packing. (They say you will surely die if you do.) They say tighten the packing nut 1/8 turn at a time until the leak stops. So far I've turned it 1/8 and it appears to have stopped. How long should I wait to see if a drop forms?
Lmfao I wish I would’ve seen this sooner at work I had to fix a inch and a quarter ball valve and had to take a power multiple elbows which were all almost rusted to the core and almost no room for my pipe wrench to loosen any lol
Oh man that's no fun lol. On the bright side, chances are if all of it is that corroded, you probably did the right thing replacing the valve anyways.
Would this also help if it is leaking from the output.? The valve always a bit of water to pass and is not fully closed.
It's worth a try, but I suspect the actual ball valve might either be gunked up or damaged. Some ball valves can be taken apart for repairs while others can't and need to be replaced, but either would require you to shut the water off.
Does the valve spray water out if the handle is removed while water is flowing through it? Or while the ball valve is closed?
Unless the nut has completely backed itself off, I don't see why it would. But in the case of varying designs out there, probably a good idea to know where the whole house water shut off valve is, and having a bucket on stand by.
I broke the handle off on my cold water feed ball valve going to my water heater. Is there any way to turn the water back on until I can get it replaced? Thanks
You could try pilfering a handle off of another ball valve if you have any, or you could try using a pair of vice grips or pliers to gently rotate the stem. Be sure not to mar the threads on said stem, and remove the nut before attempting to turn it. Emphasis on being gentle - how did it break? Was it hard to turn and rusty?
@@Bootstrappin Yes, it seemed a bit tougher to turn than it should have. When I went to turn it back on it came right off in my hand. I had it replaced yesterday and I did try to get it turned back on as you suggested, but there was just not enough meat to grip in order to get it to turn back on. It's all good now and I appreciate your reply, thanks a lot. I'm subbing!
Tutorial for fixing CS2 to please
What? What's CS2?
Didn't work for me. Made it worst so my next step is replacing it
Last year I paid a couple hundred to have a section of leaking pipe replaced in the basement. The gate valve wouldn't close all the way to shut the water off completely, rendering the whole reason the valve was there pointless... Had it replaced with a ball valve. Wish I would have known this method beforehand, might have been able to shut the water off and avoided the emergency fee from the plumber!
Do gate valves also have that nut? But yeah, I've never tried to replace a valve "live". I guess they'd turn the water off from the outside, or use a compression style valve.
LMFAO
Too bad the valve is 4 feet under the ground
What do you mean? It's buried?
I had a tricky valve , the pipes (stainless steel) were not aligned

I see -- I just skimmed through your video. How's the fix holding up?
@@Bootstrappin It holds very well.
@@gyorgygajdos1657 nice

Do you think the Zoomers would appreciate this?
@@Bootstrappin they'll have to remain soggy
