I am from South Africa. Last year, in Rome at the Colosseum, I started chatting with a sweet, friendly American woman, and when she heard that I'm from SA she exclaimed " Ah! Can I touch you?"Was quite surreal and funny😂. I can relate with much of what Solo says. I grew up white middle class in SA. Throwing away food was unthinkable. Appliances were used until they were totally unfixable..and even broken stuff would be picked up by people to take apart and sell individual parts. Even now, on the days when we put our rubbish bins outside, we have "trolley guys" who go through our bins very early in the morning for anything they can sell to recyclers. They are a huge part of recycling in SA. Clothes also get passed down until almost in tatters. We do not waste things in SA. We have high levels of poverty and unemployment and we personify "one man's junk is another man's jewels" here.

I live in Oregon but grew up in Nebraska. I didn't see a person of color until I was 16. My town was a population of 3,000. I love the different cultures, customs, and food I have experienced through 50 years of traveling. I never grew up around other races other than white Catholics but felt like I fit in wherever I went. Inclusion is a state of mind. Attitude and approach makes a big difference in acceptance from other people. I am just a human like everyone else. Solo you are wise beyond your years. Dear Sarah and Solo, thanks for being frank and honest about your international family and sharing your experiences. My father did a sabbatical at a Neurological Institute in Paris many years ago. They chose to rent in a French neighborhood and sent my youngest sister to a French school. I was able to spend 6 weeks with them! My mother and sister became able to speak enough French to navigate with little problems. My Dad was always deferred to speaking English at the Institute but when he and I went shopping, enjoyed a coffee or had lunch all the neighborhood shop owners just loved him and accepted his limited French with so much grace. My Dad taught me so much during my visit. His example of graciousness and respect has been a true blessings and teaching to me. For ever!

My son married my daughter in love who was from Ukraine. She came here to attend college and then came back for a new friend's wedding. In the process she got a job teaching at the school my son and I taught at. (A lot of paper work involved) God brought her there I believe. They have 4 children now, he's a pastor in California, and they are married about 17 years now. When first married she wanted me to shop with her because she was overwhelmed at the abundance in the grocery store. She became an American citizen and loves America. Blessings.

What a fun video you guys! It’s so interesting to hear people from other countries & cultures describe some of the things we take for granted that we say or do that they think is just head scratching🧐! We laugh so hard at 2 of my sister in law’s tell stories of their experiences of coming to the US from other countries! 😂

Thank You for talking about this! I really appreciate this! As someone who is going through the process (and has been for the past 4 years) this is very helpful and inspiring . I have been waiting to remove conditions on my Residency (after getting it through a fiancé visa) since August 2019, and this year has been particularly difficult because everything slowed down in an already saturated field. Listening to Solo’s experience is inspiring and gives me hope. You are an awesome couple!

Very interesting video. I agree with Solo about the language expressions, it takes a while to understand all of them. And also the abundance of items in the grocery store, it was amazing to see so many varieties of things in the supermarket. Going through Visa process is not an easy thing, only people who have gone through it will understand the complexity of it. I am glad everything went smoothly for you guys and very happy to see your videos and your beautiful family.

For those of you who are curious to know what Kenya is like from a locals perspective and not from a tourist who visits and just takes photos of animals and that's all you see, but they never show you beyond the touristy circuits maybe because of time constraints or the nature of being part of a vacation package and have to stick to the package offerings,
I recommend you watch a youtube channel of a local Kenyan taking you around the country in his vehicle and explaining on the sites and places he visits from big city, small towns , upcountry living and much more.
This way you will get a better perspective and feel of what it's like in Kenya.
    The youtube channel is
" Afrikan Traveller " just copy and paste
    this phrase
" Afrikan Traveller " and insert it into youtube search and you can choose which channels you want to watch.

This is an incredibly important video for anyone thinking of overseas life or intercultural marriage and brought back many many memories. I once had a class of students who came from 13 different English speaking countries, and some of the biggest problems arose because of misunderstood communication in use of words. My husband grew up overseas, and on his first evaluation as a teacher here in the US the principal tore him apart because he had "mispronounced" some words, so confusing for him. When I went to where he grew up I understood immediately why--it was the proper pronunciation there. The same thing happened to me after many years of life there in coming back to the US. THANK you so much for sharing all of this. It should be required watching for lots of people.

I first started following you when your family went on a trip to Kenya a couple of yrs ago. At that time I was a Canadian living in Vietnam, about to move to Nairobi. I love hearing about both your experiences and perspectives. I just listened to this video, curled up on my couch in my cosy Kenya house and so loved and appreciated hearing Solo’s comments and insights. Thank-you.

I can’t tell you how much I enjoy your Monday videos with Solo! Aside with loving to listen to him speak, I love seeing how you relate to each other. I had a chuckle when Solo was talking about languages and idioms. I worked as a nurse in a teaching hospital for 40 years. Every July, a fresh group of residents would rotate through. Many did not have the greatest command of the English language. We often found ourselves having to explain meanings. I remember one resident overhearing me ask another nurse to help me “scootch “ my patient up in bed. ( “ scootch =scoot in the Midwest). She said “ what is this scootch? Is it anew procedure? “ We all had a good laugh after we showed her, and explained what it meant!

So a couple things. I just realized the other day as I was watching that I started watching your channel when you were expecting Destiny....Also I love it when the two of you are able to sit down and just talk about life and I find your entire story very facinating of how you two came to be together and just the reality of what kind people you are. I have been a single mom of three for almost 20 years and I am now a gramma of 4 and for many reasons I have a very small circle of people I allow in my life and I look forward to your videos very much and I watch Camp David often as well. Just sending out a huge cyber hug to you all and thank you for being family for me.

I grew up in France, married an American 10 years ago, and even I am shocked at the abundance and waste in the US! I hosted Thanksgiving this year for only 4 people so I bought a small turkey, seemed logical. Boy was I wrong! According to my family there were not enough leftovers and I will never hear the end of it 😂!

What Solo describes about some Americans in Kenya keeping to their own communities and cultures and eating their own food is a big phenomenon with many Asian and Hispanic communities in the US (and others I'm sure but these are the two big ones). I don't think that they think their culture is better, it's more of a comfort and even a survival thing when everything around you is unfamiliar and intimidating. It's how some people who live in the US for years never learn English very well, because they stick to their own culture and communities. So it happens with all sorts of nationalities all over the world. But in the US I think it would be frowned upon to say that those people should just integrate with our culture to be accepted more. Just interesting how things are different in different countries that way!

I really enjoyed listening to Solo talk about living in the U.S. His outlook on life is so positive and open minded. We have never lived in another country, but have visited many. Trying the foods in these countries is a huge part of enjoying the countries. When we return home we try to reproduce the food we enjoyed the most. I grew up in a small town on the central coast of California. We had a lot of diversity and race was not a factor of whom we chose as friends. I am grateful for that.
