As you were talking I recalled how there were so many heart-to-heart conversations that happened while hand-washing dishes, snapping beans, hoeing weeds, walking to the mail box or even visiting a neighbor to borrow a cup of sugar to put in a cake baked from scratch... Remember being cautioned not to run or stomp indoors so the cake wouldn't fall? I think that it's in the small daily moments of working that we gain so much! TIME is such a treasure and I think you are talking about INVESTING it in ways that our parents did.

I know this video is about how you've been eating lately and I think that's awesome! But I just want to also thank you. I reached out to your church online after watching Solo's sermon last Sunday. I just felt called back to God after I've strayed over the years. And while I live in Pennsylvania, your church has welcomed me with open arms. God Bless you all 🙏🙏

I went on a mission trip in college to Uganda and there where we were of course all their cooking was over fire. Or taking 20 minutes to sort rice. Or the pig you heard squealing is the same pig they fed us that evening. Their other food came from their own crops. We washed dishes in 2 buckets. With water that got quickly cold. Bar Soap that was odd and then we put the dishes on a wreck in the sun. And the ministry I was with brought them toasters, griddles, crockpots, water kettle. It made me sad because I so appreciated watching the process them teaching me the real way to cook those things. And just the way they were on "African time" nothing was rushed or stressful.

When you live the (old way) you have the beautiful smell of food in the house. E.g. Bread straight from the oven. The aroma of fresh fruit straight from the tree. Most important of all SEASONAL food. Much better for you. The anticipation of a season coming and appreciation of the seasons. A season for everything . Amen 🥬🥦🐓🐑🐖🙏

I totally agree with Sarah! I started scratch cooking a year or 2 ago and it takes a lot of time, but it teaches you so much! I have learned the true value of a home cooked meal and have experienced such joy in setting down a beautiful and lovingly made meal before my family. I don't think that we can truly value the Lord's provisions until we have walked through the whole process of making something. When we eat processed foods now or just food from a restaurant, we find ourselves sluggish and not feeling great!

I LOVE this! God has actually been speaking to me about the same thing! Enjoy the time to keep house, cook food, doing laundry, homeschooling, and living. I usually rush around to get it all done & I'm frustrated that I have so much to do, in order to mark it off the list. SO, I've been taking it all in and not rush around. I tell you, we have all (especially me) have calmed down and really enjoy each other and taking care of what God has given us! Plus, we are wanting to have chickens, a huge garden, and a cow too!!!! I never in my wildest dreams thought we'd be headed to that!

I like your perspective of recognizing there may be purpose in the tasks. I know I often enjoy the time of reflection and rumination when doing tasks that take time - mowing the yard, weeding, washing dishes, cooking. I have some health/disability issues, and my husband begs me not to do those things bc I pay a price being in pain for a couple days. But I genuinely enjoy the process of the tasks. And I sing, and pray, and think, and sort out my thoughts and feelings while I do them.

@@OurTribeofMany Love your wisdom! There are thousands of chemicals allowed into foods, that legally don't have to be written on the label. It's easier to buy one ingredient foods, by bulk too! I especially enjoy bulk dried fruit, cherries, figs and dates. And chia seeds, quinoa, raw sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, brown rice, lentils, beans, chickpeas, almonds & other tree nuts. They store well, are nutritious, and easily adapt to recipes :)

At a "young" 74..I am with you. One thing Covid has taught me is to slow down and live a more simple life. I grew up in Birmingham UK, a big city, of working class family. Not much spare money but we ate well. We got our food fresh each day from the butcher, greengrocer(vegs) and bakery. The bread was basic bread and I believe in those days no foreign ingredients I now live in Ontario Canada.. I have volunteered all of my life, but I think it is now time for me. Keep us up on what you are doing/cooking. Blessings to you all.

@@castledykesfarm3396 Thank you for a lovely reply. Same here. .we had a boiler that had to be heated for hot water by the fireplace in the living room! We had no washer, certainly no dryer and our 'fridge was a small larder off the kitchen with a grill to the outside. But I never felt deprived as a child. My nan lived with us so she cooked the meals and was always there. It was so nice hearing from you.

Very thought provoking about the older generations. I did the same thing with my kids - convenience foods. Now that I am older and the kids are grown, I have found the concept of Being Present in my life. When I was raising kids, the kids kept me present in the Now for long periods of time, but when I wasn't present I was always thinking about the next thing, and the next thing, and the consequences of not doing this thing will impact that thing, etc. I am learning that being Present brings me many gifts, and the Present is a present from God. It is hard to retrain your brain, but that is what I feel like I am doing. Being present means just enjoying what I am doing when I am doing it and not thinking about the past or the future. It is where Joy lives. Since you are all pretty joyful, I would add that the gift of kids is a Present and they teach being Present and Joy. Our kids are our greatest teachers. You are very blessed.

I can agree with you on making your food at home. Depending on what you are making some may take much more time, but the reward is wonderful. I actually enjoy cooking. I used to laugh, when I worked at a bank, most of the people that I worked with opened a container, put in microwave and that was dinner for them.
I was never that kind of cook. Not that I don’t use a microwave, but I don’t use many prepared items. My co workers were amazed that I actually cooked a full meal each nite. I had growing children at that time to feed. That was my motivation to cook real food.

Hey from Glasgow Scotland I've been watching your channel for a while now and think it's great they way you both are and ur kids they growing up to be smart individuals who all love cooking etc. I wish hear more ppl would be like this with there kids. I only have 1 child due to my health hip dysplasia spina bifida scoliosis and pcos I wanst able to have any more and I would have gave anything to have atleast another 1 anyway me n my daughter have a great relationship shes nearly 22 I'm 39 40 this year I was 17 when I had her but while she was growing up I let her help weither it was cooking diner or making cakes she loved it n now she is a good little cook and a great baker you see my gran taught me to to bake she was my world i was 17 when me and hubby got our first house together 22 years later and still wee cook from scratch I watch the things I use I hate processed food . Over the last few years I started batch cooking we have 2 freezers now and although daughter has moved out I still do batch cooking with certain things as I want to know n my food but alsos some days I cant even stand because of pain so we always have fresh cooked meals on hand hubby is a good cook to . but my daughter she has picked up alot of my habits cooking from scratch ct and her fiance loves her cooking. Just shows not only what wee teach out kids but them watching the things wee do they learn from and adapt to there own lifes when they grow up. I love the relationship I have with her shes not afraid to speak her mind or tell you she loves us I always made sure she knew her own mind and could make her own decisions when she was even little kid even thro her teenage years when out with friend she always made the right choice ie not to drink alcohol or get into trouble she wanted to always have fun but fo the right thing . But like I always say we can only do our best xxx

I spent most of my life surviving and trying to catch up with the fast pace of life, then not many years ago,I realized that I was not living life to its fullest. We've had good times, but not really enjoying life as it should be. I lost time with my children that I can't get back, and had no time for myself as I should have had,so I'm spending time enjoying all the little things, and making sure to take time to do God's will. I've even learned a lot about what I've been taking into my body and into my skincare as well,it's a new awakening.

Society has brainwashed us into thinking so many lies about what is not good and what they say is. Like you said.. taking the time to live simply and do work is valuable! Sitting on our rears and staring at screen is not so much. (I say this as I do laundry and watch you on UA-cam 😂🤣) but I like the company for these chores! God bless your new journey! Good for you, that you're chancing your diet. So nice to see the whole family is on board.
I had my doubts when Sarah mengend 1 ingredient meal 🤔 what does she mean. But now I know what you ment
I always was amazed how much packaged food you bought, when I watched your grocery hauls. We never buy canned food or eat food out of a jar. Our kids don't even like it. We both we'rent raised like that. Our parents had a vegetable garden. Most of our fresh food and fruit we buy at the local market (once a week) or grocery store.
Here in Holland is canned / jar food cheaper than fresh food, but if you eat by the season, it is affordable even whit a large family.
I admire you for once a month grocery shopping. I tried (several times) , but it isn't working for us. So I go once a week.
Just like you we have a budget for grocery's
I love your honesty about so many things and the way you talk about it. My compliments

Yes it is cheaper because the junk foodish stuff full of preservatives cost more. Those chemicals cost lots basically. With addictive properties that make people feel they need them.
There are organic flours you can buy so you do not need to grind, although I have a friend who buys whole grains and loves to grind them in her machine and makes lovely bread. It is baby steps to how much you can do, you have a full house. But it does get easier and easier figuring out simple. And will just become the routine and not make it feel like it takes longer. This is very exciting!

It's amazing how we ALL have almost run to keep up with what's going on in the world. I think you are doing what you need to do. I never actually slowed down until my children were older. I always valued the time spent with my children, gardening, cooking, cleaning, and playing. Some things have to be put on hold to get to do those things with kids. Kids will not last forever, the other things will. God gave them to us for a minute, and we need to treasure them. I want to die knowing I have done the best I could do with and for my family. It's our choice whether we get caught up in the fast pace. Most important, is when we recognize it and do something about it. I love your channel. Don't do anything differently. You put God first and family second, and that's the way it needs to be.

Do you grow a garden with your children ? There could be your tomatoes! I didn’t home school but I did enjoy including my children in everything that I could teach them. So my children would ask, what are we going to grow, that we can eat ! They enjoyed planting, watching them grow, picking & cooking ! It was always fun.

Like everyone you have 24 hours in your day . How you use them is your choice. When you are home schooling your older ones your little ones are not out with you in shops and play park with their peer group. Equally you are not hand washing nappies in cold water as I did and hand washing clothes and bedding . Times change so ju6 do the best you can. Jen xxx

We made a switch 5 years ago that we purchase things found in nature and limited what came in boxes and bottles in our home (except for spices). I made more from scratch recipes and I have grown to love the results. It amazes me how adaptable children can be and how they can teach you.

I started gardening after learning of food allergies our family was dealing with and having to stand in the store and read all the labels to make sure we weren’t getting any of those ingredients that we had allergies to. We are on our 3rd year of gardening with the hopes of just feeding our family better after we too saw all the crazy stuff that was being put into food these days. We aren’t perfectly eating but have improved greatly over the years and intend to keep putting our hand to the plow and improve as we go. I had no idea I would love gardening and get excited about this time every year to start buying seeds and planning where to plant everything. We are still learning but it has been a wonderful “classroom” to be in.

I agree “produce more” is causing us as people to become less self-reliant. I had to get a rental car recently and it literally turned off when I stopped just to turn back on when I accelerated. I may be old fashioned but some things I like to do on my own (if I want you to stop car I’ll turn you off myself). 😃

Sarah, I understand exactly what you are saying, daily tasks have value sometimes the time spent have added benefits. My daughter (20) made bagels from scratch yesterday. It took a bit of time but they were amazing! More than that she did it by herself, she was glowing with self confidence and sense of accomplishment. She soooo needed that lately. Great video.

So happy you shared the thought of valuable time. I have thought back to the past about how much time I spent with my daughter and whether it was valuable time or did I miss moments. I have one child and my husband and I worked full time. She’s now 23 and she herself has many memories of time spent with her, even if it was working in the yard or cooking or garage sale shopping and church. I guess i did not realize that daily living was actually very valuable to her. I’m so thankful that those were important moments as well, not missed moments. I still spend much time with her even if it’s just talking in my room or cooking a meal together. Everything we do with, for, and in front of our children are valuable.

i was raised eating our own raised meat and fruit and veggies from the garden, no fast food and for the 32 years of my marriage, we have done the same and it is a wonderful life, sometimes even as Christians we tend to forget that God knew what was best for us and our health. Convenience is nice sometimes but you CAN worship while you cook and workout or work in the garden or yard. I think he likes that.

I’m saving up for the thing you would not name to add to our kitchen. And this chat resonates with me because God has been working on the “it takes time to just live” topic in me for about a year! For SO LONG, living was the goal and all the work people did was poured into that goal.... now we want the work to live to go so fast so we have time for.... idk... leisure/entertainment.... 🥴.

It’s better to evaluate your eating habits before you have health problems that force you to. Also great to teach your kids to make these wise food choices. I’ve been researching the health benefits of fasting and realizing that there are not only spiritual benefits from fasting.

I'm with you on the healthier eating! When you start reading what they put in foods, it gets scary! I cook almost all our food from scratch. Its notable to me from Argentina to notice that shopping in the USA seems to be all processed foods, in tins or packets. I go to butcher and buy the meat I want and chicken and then veg shop. And I eat my meat dish with fresh veg every day. Is that what you call one ingredient meals? I never eat anything out of a tin. And one or two fresh fruit per day.

My husband and I have been on this kind of journey to slow down, enjoy life with our kids, eat better since we started homeschooling 10 years ago. We have been gardening and raising chickens and rabbits. This year God gave us the opportunity to sell our city home and buy 15 acres and and old farm house. We feel like we are living the “dream” lol. Good for you all and it’s nice to hear this from you. Just because it’s easier and faster, doesn’t make it better.
Oh, and I am guessing you bought a pressure canner, lol. We will see😁
