  • We have been waiting for this since I bought this Ferrari 360 Modena back in March! After getting the manual swap completed and the video out the next day, I couldn't leave you guys hanging with those terrible nighttime clips at the end. So I wrangled a crew and took the car up to some of my favorite roads in SoCal to give you some gated manual goodness!
    @pennzoil 5w40 Euro Platinum Synthetic has been keeping all of my cars running great. The 360 has an 8,500 rpm rev limited and I want to do my best to protect this engine so I trust in my Pennzoil. #longmaywedrive #pennzoilpartner

    Pro tip: to not slosh your oil when you pour, make sure the spout is at the top, and the curved portion is at the bottom, it allows air in and doesn't slosh and spill. Then as you pour just turn the bottle.

      I totally see the comparison. In profile, I kept mistaking this car for a CRX and the way it sounds and is geared is highly reminiscent of a k20a with ITBs. Makes sense as the Ferrari engine is basically a V8 K series.
      The way he has this car now is like a V8 K series rear wheel drive CRX with a bunch of high-end top shelf swap parts. That amazingly designed billet shifting mechanism even sort of looks like one of the more baller K swap shift boxes

    Something people don’t remember. The stock transmission in cars years ago was always a manual transmission. It was always an upgrade to get an automatic transmission.
    So of course, Ferrari wanting to be premium, spent all that money to make that F1 automatic gearbox
    I completely agree with you. An actual manual shifting car is so much better for a real driver.

    • @Yerrrrrrrrrt
      @Yerrrrrrrrrt Місяць тому +10

      No, Ferrari spent all that money to create a gearbox to win races post turbo era in F1. Then it was eventually homologated to road cars as a bit of marketing and also a bit of adding current racing tech into their road cars.

    • @Group_Anonymous
      @Group_Anonymous Місяць тому +10

      Up until 1988, all Formula 1 cars had manual transmission as well as a clutch pedal in the car. Electro-hydraulic valves were used in the aircraft industry at the time. Ferrari saw potential and came up with a similar system that would allow a much smoother gear change while taking away the need for a third pedal or gear shift…..
      Ferrari began to develop the Formula One-style gearbox in 1994, calling it Selespeed. Selespeed is an electro-hydraulic gear and clutch command, and is derived from the system now used by every Formula One team.

    • @bukwok

      totally different time , back then they spent money to develop this gear box for F1 car , in F1 world , if the new tech working ,other team quickly follow Ferrari ,so they mainly develop for F1 car , not for the road car , just simply make it work on road car , pedal shift automatic gear box absolutely racing car stuffs back then , of course "F1 gear box" absolutely good for marketing too.

    I've owned a 1983 Ferrari 308 since the late 90's and I have to regularly explain to other people why I love it so much. The gated manual is the greatest thing you can experience if you think you're a 'driver'. My car isn't even close in speed to your average modern Ford Focus but the noise it makes and the gear changes mean I'll never let it go. I think you'll have the same problem now your 360 is a manual. I've had Porsches that have come and gone but the Ferrari remains.

    Its not that Ferrari thought people didn't want to drive manuals. It was actually Ferrari owners that asked for the paddle shifters. Because F1 cars had paddle shifters, so of course they had to have them as well. Ferrari wouldn't have done it otherwise. But you gotta admit paddles are at least better then an automatic.

  • @EIGHTLUG
    @EIGHTLUG Місяць тому +19

    To be fair, Ferrari was the first company to bring a paddle shifted manual to the consumer market. This technology was a direct result of the R&D of their F1 team. That was the allure to the customers at the time, to have an F1 style experience when shifting gears. The paddle shifted manual made its debut in the last years of the 355. The gated manual was available each year, making the F1 cars more rare. They gained in popularity in the 360 and was the only transmission option for the Enzo.

    Hey Vin, little tip to prevent or at least heavily reduce the slushing when filling up oil: Hold the bottle sideways and not like you did here with the opening at the bottom.
    The slushing happens because of air not being able to flow freely into the bottle as it gets emptier, because with the opening at the deepest point all the oil is above it and blocks the air.

      I'm glad someone said it -- came to mind for me right away. This is a great video and the converted F360 is chef's kiss -- but the S65 engine in the M3 is a different animal (and obviously from several years ahead in the future) ... there's a reason why the S65/S85 won so many engineering awards. Yes, they were in 3/5 series BMWs, but they would've been just at home in an exotic marque like Ferrari. So a great comparison indeed :)

    Dem gears, tho! For real though, that Ferrari is really coming together. I can't wait to see it in a year. One thing though, you gotta hold on to that iconic Vin Gold color. It's Vin Gold now, whatever Italian name it had before is gone, it belongs to you.

    I used to work at a Chevy dealer and they had to put a motor in a c7 at like 1200 miles and the tech over filled it because the new engine already had oil in it from the factory and it pushed the dipstick out and fountained the oil all over the shop it was also a dry sump car😂 I have a video of the start up somewhere but you can’t see the oil but you can hear it

    In that time they wanted the paddle shift because of the F1 cars everyone wanted to feel like an F1 driver when they bought those Ferraris. Thats why the majority came with an F1 gearbox it was an optional that everyone wanted in that time

    @Vin_tra!
    Pro-Tip: hold oil bottle with outlet at top, instead of bottom or side.
    Yes, it is further from the oil fill but, you won't have the whole volume of oil pushing for the exit
    aka it won't try to all come out at once and do the wavy whip motion deal.
    Practice/test it on your work bench by pouring oil into a glass to prove to yourself that what I'm saying is true!

    Not to give you a big head at all but I always look forward to your videos on Thursday. They're just entertaining to watch and well shot/editing! I'm glad you're enjoying the 360 as much as I'm enjoying the the 360 content! I think it's time to give Scotto a visit to maybe have him drive it and maybe race to see who's is faster??

    i do like the look and idea of the gated manual. I drove a friend's 360 with the F1 gearbox...and it was pretty strange....it felt like a manual that you were using by remote control...I the the PDK in the 911 is much smoother.

    14:42 "Tech Tip" This is the second time I've seen you do this. You get oil all over the place, brotha! When you pour the oil bottle, flip it upside down. Make sure the wedge of the bottle is closest to the car. That wedge is designed into the bottle to prevent the back surge effect you get when you pour. By having the wedge on the bottom when you pour will allow a smoother flow of oil to exit the bottle and may help with preventing your oil spils..

    Honestly mate, the best channel on YT at the moment. The story, the b-roll, scene setting, balance of piece to camera and vlog and let’s just get sht done is awesome… and then there’s the actual content, content that’s again balanced and palatable. I really don’t care about Supercars but the cars you have are the Supercars for car enthusiasts, while i type this you’re even talking about drivers cars, not the power figures n sht mannnn such an amazing channel, amazing story teller and tastefull af edits. Thank you vin, sickest.

    There’s a back road from Camarillo to Santa Barbara a lot of fun to drive I just had my PDK tune and engine in my 992 4S it’s almost like playing a musical instrument are milk a cow😆 my friends has a 992 manual. He’s actually a better driver than me, but he could not keep up with me especially those tight turns I have been driving manuals 80% of my life, but I must say with the tune PDK I really enjoy the quick up shifts and downshifts and on the 405 and the 101 and LA traffic, leaving it in automatic mode is a blessing

    My man, the swap was/is the way to go. You can't beat a proper manual for driving engagement. Not on the same par, but I manual swapped my Toyota Soarer with the 1J, removed the auto and added a Supra Getrag V160. Totally different car now!

      @@Jollytsunami Ha, you're too kind. The V160 is an awesome gearbox, close ratios so acceleration is very snappy. My only issue is that spares such as synchros are hard, if not impossible to find. I was lucky too, I did my conversion before prices became stratospheric.

    Spin the oil quart 180 and pour with the spout at the top. It feels like it is wrong, but it's supposed to be poured that way and it won't glug like it did!!

    “It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.” Seems fitting for the 360, the experience is about the engagement and the sensory goodness, not outright speed.
    Also, so glad to hear you’re keeping the 997 RS. Content with that car would be rad, too!

    Hey Vin, next time you go to fill your oil, try pouring the bottle sideways (From back label to Front label) instead of the way you were doing; where it was pulsing out of the bottle. Another car guy showed this to me while I was adding coolant. It WORKS MUCH BETTER

  • @dbldwn3842
    @dbldwn3842 Місяць тому

    Vin, just a quick note here, if you flip the quart of oil around so the spout is farther away from the fill neck and not closer to it. The oil pours alot better, you don't have that sloshing action coming from the quart. Basically, you were holding the quart of oil the wrong way...just sayin.
