Tens of thousands of people in neighboring tribes decided allying with the Spanish against the Aztecs was a better idea than the status quo. That speaks volumes about the nature of the Aztecs.
Exactly! The Fact is, 1,500 Spanish would have never be able to Conquer the Aztec Empire (5-6 Million), unless they had an overwhelming Force of Allies.
The Movie Apocalypto is actually incredibly Accurate.
The Aztec Empire for all purposes, was flat out EVIL.
The Aztec is something that genuinely interests me
Yeah, sure, right
Their surrounding neighbors claimed they were incredibly brutal so allied with the Conquistadors to overthrow them.
Well no one is saying they weren’t brutal in war
If only learning history in school was this fun..
My history teacher tried... with a cowboy hat and accent, for a lesson. This is waaaaay better lol
I was one of the few people that history teacher would tell coolest stories like this history was my favorite class
All cultures and civilizations of the world have an interesting dichotomy of brutality and virtue. The Aztecs were one of many.
The Aztec civilization is unique and the most interesting in my opinion.
@@kirtop-archaeology How? It's not unlike many other cultures.
There is nothing new under the sun.
@@dannydanny865 as they say today, are you big mad? Is your culture the more brutal and awful? Is that the race? Or was it those cultures that were not allowed to thrive and cut short, even though they were already cruising the universe without a space ship and establishing such information in stone.
But let me guess, they were savages and foretold onto henry the whatever number.
@@tegofido dude, relax, have a snickers or something.
I agree that context is key in history and people shouldn't necessarily be labeled as "evil" because somethings they did is offensive to modern sensibilities. But it should apply to all peoples and civilizations. Aztec, European, African, Asian and everyone else alike. Which means we have to look at the Spanish, Portuguese, and British Empires in the same way as the Aztec.
Um….Aztecs sacrificed innocent children? Hello! 👋🏼 oh wait, they mercy killed them.
Moral relativism is a thing.
@@spiritmatter1553 And children were worked to death, abused and mistreated so terribly in England in Dickens's time that he wrote book after book to try and convince people in his society to maybe not do that. Perhaps the key is to look at all cultures with the same level of nuance, and put their actions within their fully evidenced cultural contexts where possible. We cannot continue this same pattern of condemning one society for something, and just handwaiving the same action as "from a different time" for another society.
If someone traveled back in time to watch us, we would do a lot of things that they find appalling. There will ALWAYS be something offensive in every culture and subculture
What Everyone that calls white ppl colonizers needs to understand
@@spiritmatter1553 and right now we in the modern day are doing the exact same thing but on a significantly larger scale. Got any words about that?
I feel like history teachers just give students a link to an infographic show video and have them answer questions about what was in the video as a part of their lesson plan
I really doubt they did their due diligence with this video.
i got my history teacher to start using Oversimplified videos
That’s actually how I found the channel
Kids would literally learn more that way.
They were defeated in one year because the Spanish teamed up with all the neighbours of the Aztecs because they hated them so much because they were being kidnapped and sacrificed
Every woman who died in labour deserves to be seen as a warrior that's cool af mad respect .
Islam say the same thing till today, bro. A woman who dies in labour, dies a martyr’s death.

The Aztec Empire fell because everyone around them hated their guts for their oppression, brutality, and frequent tithes of human sacrifices. Less than a thousand Europeans did *not* conquer 6 million Aztecs, smallpox and a quarter million recruits from the surrounding tribes did, the Spaniards just said 'hey, we _won't_ cut out and eat the hearts of your children' and the other tribes said 'sign me up!'
They were not a 'gentle people' any more than the Spaniards, British, and Japanese were 'gentle people'. They all had their virtues and evils, but mentioning that would be inconvenient, wouldn't it?
Absolutely!
I will say this 1,500 men would have an extremely hard time conquering 10 million Aztecs if a lot of those Aztecs didnt want those 1,500 men to win. Makes more sense that a lot of those other tribes helped the Spainards. Knowing you or your family could have their hearts cut out for some god you didnt believe in. Well that is a pretty good motivator, but what truly got them was the same thing that destroyed Rome
It was the diseases. A lot of the diseases brought over from the unhygienic Europeans is what really messed up the Aztecs.
@@cityrat3237 Yes that definitely killed a high percentage of people. By you saying the "unhygienic Spaniards" implies. That the Spanish some how intentionally knew they were bringing these diseases. Which is a 21 century view. The medical knowledge of Europeans at this time for a fever was to bleed a person. No, if the black plague or any number of other large out breaks of plagues hadn't of broken out in Europe perhaps the Roman's would still rule this world. If the Europeans hadn't of introduced horses back into North America. Maybe the Aztecs would have slowly conquered all of North America sacrificing thousands of people on a daily basis. Perhaps not, perhaps people would have been better off with famines, human sacrificing, raids by other tribes. Or maybe people enjoy air conditioning, phones, stores that you can just go and by food.
Well, the Mesoamericans also saw the end-game of war differently from how Europe did. After Cortes leveled Tenochtitlan and overthrew the triple alliance, representatives of the other city states and previous vassals of the Aztecs expected the conquistadors to accept tribute and head back home. They were confused that the conquistadors were there to stay and to subjectify the indigenous peoples. Keep in mind that all diplomacy between the conquistadors and Aztecs had to be parsed through two translators, so there are ample indications of miscommunication at best and outright deception at worst. Had they known that the fall of the Triple Alliance would result in the eradication of their way of life instead of simply changing who was on the throne, it's hard to tell if they would have been as supportive.
Most civilizations have “ skeletons” in their closets.
and others make closets out of their skeletons...
I see what you did there.
And children in their basements
Yeah, and we condemn them, take the holocaust for example. Now stop trying to make an excuse on this terrible tribe.
"Oh they brutally sacrificed human beings, including children. But y'know... They had feminism though so that makes it innocent and pure 😇"
After watching this I'm researching Maya and the Three. Great film that touches on culture and art of Aztecs and more!

Nothing about killing your children because they disobey is gentle
It's a shame we don't know more about the Aztec's. I wonder "What if" a lot more evidence of Aztec civilization survived the Spanish conquest. Just image what we would learn from it all. Great video.
Well there would be a crusade that would probably destroy there civilization as being the litteraly embodiment of evil and satanism. they did kinda openly worship demons and sacrifice to them.
This is gonna be a good one, finally caught an episode early.
After a war, the history is told only by the side who won

Then why don't you give them a proper burial?
And haiduks were not revolutionaries, but a bandits
There was a reason why the Spanish had such an easy time getting other tribes to join their conquest of the Aztecs.
What was the reason?
@@daniburke9452 The Aztecs were known for being extremely brutal, and subjugated everyone they conquered.
They demanded these other tribes to give tribute, which included people to be sacrificed.
Now let’s talk about the real brutal folks. The ones that had NO respect whatsoever, who’s culture is built on greed. The Europeans
@@cityrat3237 lol, oh yes. God forbid that the conquering army didn't "respect" the Aztecs overtly brutal and bloodthirsty culture, smh.

The Aztecs were advanced, but we would consider their practices some of the most demented and terrifying. They were an empire and rightfully feared and hated by their neighbors.
Yeah. That title... Pretty contradictory. Gentle is ONE THING the Aztecs for sure aren't known for. These guys are discovered... From their own discovered ancient records THEY RECORDED for being pretty brutal even to their own
I mean when they had neighboring city states that would have loved to wipe them out I’m sure they needed to be brutal
Still nowhere near brutal compared to countless Old World societies.
@@FranciscoPerez-oi3wp also the fact that Human Sacrifice was completely common and accepted in Mesoamerica
Gotta give Spain a huge thank you
I just keep finding it hilarious that people always forgot to mention that it's virtually impossible for a single expedition of 900 men to wipe an entire empire of millions out. The truth is that, they freaking didn't. Literally everyone hated the Aztecs because of the military oppression, brutal taxes, and sacrifices. The Spaniards were the spark they all needed to come together and take the fight to the Aztecs. Some accounts tell us that there were over 200.000 allied warriors.
Did the Spaniards genocided the Aztecs, then? No, FFS. Everyone who supported the Spaniards got a slice of the cake. That's the reason why Latin America looks nothing like British America. That's why Caucasians and people of European descent are the vast minority in South America. Unlike the British, the Spaniards didn't wipe out the natives, they offered them positions of power.
You can check that the early governors of Mexico all had Aztec names. The Spanish empire operated like the roman empire, by assimilating people.
The aztecs and most other native americans were wiped out by disease brought over from europe. Youre acting like you have soo much knowledge on the topic but you dont even know the basic facts
@@SL1CEND1CEN fax😭he missed out the MAIN reason the aztecas fell
@@SL1CEND1CEN not technically their fault though. Germ theory wasn't even a thing yet. By that logic, should we blame China for so many world diseases, from the bubonic plague, the Spanish flu (besides the US, the strongest theory is that it came from China), and covid? Face it, if it wasn't the Spanish that conquered them it would've been some other world powers. They aren't anymore evil for doing it than anyone else would've done. They could've done a lot worse for the time.
@@SL1CEND1CEN no. disease didn’t come into play until later after they were already almost defeated
@@kyleball8396 so the tribes and Spaniards weakened the Aztecs than the disease finished them off?Is that what ur saying?
I’ve been interested in aztec civilization for a while now, and I’ve learned a lot. Yes the Aztecs did some terrible, unforgivable things, but when truly looking into *why* they did it, I came to understand why human sacrifice was such an important part of Aztec culture. The Aztec people were conditioned into believing that the gods required blood, mainly the sun god: Tonatiuh. Tonatiuh was both the sun god and the sun itself, and had to be nourished with human blood in order to move across the sky. The Aztecs truly believed, without a doubt, that without sacrifice the sun would not rise. Their culture revolves around the sun, as it grants life to everything. Without the sun the world would become dark and cold, crops couldn’t grow, and the earth would be destroyed by monsters. They didn’t practice human sacrifice out of malice or hatred, they literally thought that without it the world would end. While I definitely do not condone human sacrifice, I understand why they did it. How they even came up with these beliefs I don’t know, but If I was an Aztec person living in Tenochtitlan, raised to believe such things, I too would believe that human sacrifice was necessary for the world’s survival.
We may not agree with what they did, but the Aztecs were not evil. Their society was conditioned to believe that blood sacrifice was the only way to prevent the destruction of the world. They otherwise were incredibly advanced, being experts on mathematics and astronomy, believed in universal education for everyone, no matter what gender or class. At the time Tenochtitlan was built upon a lake, it was larger than Rome or any European city at the time and described by Spanish explorers as even more beautiful. Every night parties and reunions were held for citizens to relax and socialize. They kept incredibly clean, bathing twice a day and keeping their city as spotless as possible. They made giant structures like templo mayor, even without beasts of burden to haul materials. These are just a few of their accomplishments. It’s important to acknowledge the bad, but we shouldn’t forget the good parts of their civilization either.
Slaveowners believed slavery was the only way to improve society and life for everyone, including the slaves....
That might have been the case initially, but they then started tithing conquered peoples for blood sacrifices so they wouldn't have to butcher their own people, hence why all the surrounding tribes sided with the Spanish (for better or for worse)
The Aztec rivaled some European civilizations.
Love this page If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree.
Can we have a video on battles
Idk man... human sacrifice is not poggers, no matter what you wanna say.
My ex isn't on this list? She definitely belongs on here.
So all Aztec men were expected to go to war, but not women. And when women swept the floor, that was held in as much esteem as men risking their lives in battle. I wouldn't call that gender equality.
Giving birth was seen as a battle. Until you give birth go whining about it
You should do a video on the American Chestnut tree. It was a huge ecological disaster and now work is being done to restore it.
C'mon bro. I really like watching these videos but this one was a stretch. Next you should do one on how the peace loving mongols were misunderstood, lol
Ahh, yes; many priesthoods have explained sacrifices as necessary for preserving the cosmos.
"Honoring" the victims, though, has suspiciously similar parallels to the explanations of the Plains Indians that they tortured those they captured in order to give them the chance to win merit by demonstrating their courage.
anything is possible through sincerely held beliefs ;-)
I wonder how people would view the catacombs with no record surrounding them and with the preconception from colonists that didn’t like the culture of the people that it had to do with sacrifice? I’m not saying that sacrifice wasn’t a part of their culture or anything, just that it is easy to make their things seem odd while ignoring that there are catacombs lined with skulls under Paris.
When you make a comparison you should know what you are talking about. The catacombs in Paris were built because of the black death, the bubonic plague.
Imagine living at the place where you, or your family can randomly being choosen as sacrifice.
People weren’t chosen at random. A lot volunteered, we’re prisoners, or deathly ill. Rarely we’re people chosen at random and even then it wasn’t just anybody.
Royalty are idealistic what's wanted but don't worry it happens most people don't know much about Aztec Mayan chichemeka Olmec and many others I believe you will learn that's why you're here

History now hates explorers. It’s amazing People have always conquered or migrated & original habitants lose everything.
I don't buy the idea that it was all cute and playful. No way they were sacrificing their own people (let alone willingly) they most definitely were sacrificing subdued tribes and prisoners of war.
There's a reason all the tribes around them decided to side with the invaders.
