Les Dawson sat in the same dressing room as sid , doing his make up. He got a whiff of the aroma of whiskey and then to the left of him in the mirror he saw Sid James dressed in white with black eyes, and looking frightful, his face contorted and twisted more craggy than in life. He looked at les aware of his presence and shouted at Les, Les shot up and rushed from the dressing room. Later he took one of his extras with him to collect his stuff ,getting the extra to gather his items from the table at the mirror. It is still not known what Sid shouted but it's pretty obvious it would have been something about Les being next if continue to drink to excess like he was doing at that time.
I used to go in there to play the organ about 8am while the cleaners were in, before school in 1974-5, had to go behind the stage to switch it on. I never saw anything but I always felt spooked, when I trained as a spiritualist medium my mind went straight back to those mornings
I think it is because the management won't allow it now. There were various ghost groups that came in the 70s to investigate, but believe it or not, they were all scared-off by the two ghosts, lol. I am the only one to have captured up to date evidence at the theatre (see Sunderland odeon Orbs video) and I didn't go there for that. I visited because it is said the old theatre is being demolished to make way for a new shopping centre! If there is to be a ghost hunt there it needs to be asap.
Im doing research about the dundee cinema owner J B Milne and two of the cinemas he owned were reportedly haunted the broadway was supposedly haunted and the story goes the projectionist was there after the cinema closed for the night and he heard footsteps and a door opening in the corridor but when he looked there was nothing there and he took fright and left the building hurridly the story goes that it was the ghost of a projectionist who hanged himself in the projection box but was also told the same story belonged to another cinema the rialto which jbm didnt own so whether it was folklore or the story was passed around i dont know as have never found proof of the projectionists death at the broadway the other cinema the plaza was also supposedly haunted the person who was the manager in the late sixties told me the following : because there was a large stage area there were various redundant projectors and seats stored there from other jbm cinemas and one day when he was back stage a seat swab fell from the catwalk and just missed him whether it was a ghost or due to traffic he does not know the other story was that he arrived one morning to find the cleaners outside the cinema in hysterics two cleaners had gone upstairs to clean the balcony area and had seen what appeared to be a man on fire in the corridor needless to say the cleaners quit on the spot the theatre in sunderland is also reputed to be haunted by sid james's ghost and les dawson when he played there apparently saw sid james's ghost but refused to discuss what happened but he also refused to appear at that theatre for the rest of his career
