Fuck I love Kreator. Slayer kills it, too. Kerry King signed my copy of Divine Intervention. I actually bought a B. C. Rich Kerry King V!
Just sent a $5 tip for talking on the greatness of Manowar. I’ve seen them in Montreal and in Worcester Mass for the Battle Hymns 2000 tour. I fucking love Manowar, and apparently my virginity too.
There are only two genres: Music I like and bad music
Facts
Sad but true
listening to power metal while playing my Paladin in WoW oh so many years ago....I felt like such a badass. That genre will always hold a special place in my heart.
best genre mentioned in the video unironically
Finn only hates power metal because he takes metal too serious
Rhapsody went hard for wow too haha
This is the issue with power metal, when it started to appeal to the videogame/cartoon crowd. Turned into cheesy happyland shlock. There IS great power metal out there though... First two Blind Guardian albums, first two Fifth Angel albums, how bout Riot's Thundersteel album?
I still listen to Rhapsody of Fire playing Warcraft. So much better and emblematic of power metal than Manowar. Christopher Lee holding a sword and doing the spoken word parts of Unholy Warcry? Get the fuck out of here.
Happy 311 Day!
Ima smoke a blunt! lol
Happy what
May your energy be amber
Well you fooled me. 311 day is a real thing. But it has nothing to do with 311 the band.......I'm gonna blast 311 from my car anyway.
three Ks @@elcheekoful
Breaking Benjamin = Best butt rock band. Several songs are legitimately good, and surprisingly they put on a great live performance.
I agree. They're the most consistent imo.
I seen them with Seether 3DG and Hurt back in 06-07 in a small venue in Johnson City TN Breaking Benjamin Blew the roof off that place I'll never forget that show
best butt rock bands are breaking benjamin, creed, three days grace, godsmack, hoobastank, blah blah anything that isn’t cringey or overly yarling
Weirdly, I've found they're a great band to have on my playlist when I'm working out. I can't explain why. But some of their songs are certified bops.
Nothing is more nostalgic than hearing the painful Suicide Silence snare
Just one vocal line, always in the second verse, where the bassist with a soul patch would step in with backup vocals. That was one way I used to defined the Butt Rock genre.
Also the camera angle looking down the bass guitar neck to show the low E vibrating after being plucked, never with a pick, always finger bass.
Because I'm a huge nerd, I wrote a paper at my local trade school about the origins of Power Metal... and i can confirm that Manowar was one of the early bands to make music with swords and sorcery at the forefront...way before Helloween, but right around the same time as Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol. So there you go. Manowar IS POWER METAL.
Finn's right, he's a true metal elitist!
Themes aside, don't you think there are "old school" power metal (Manowar, Running Wild, late 80s Riot) and "new school" power metal (Halloween, Rhapsody, etc)?
Dio era Rainbow surely has a shout at being the first Power Metal band.
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 definitely. Power Metal has a weird evolution as a subgenre, it was kind of all over the place way back in the day before it became its own thing
@@DigitalBath742 not sure you could ever call Rainbow metal. Hard Rock at the most.
@@friendlypirahna I guess... All I know is, Grimson Glory, Savatage = good. Hammerfall, Dragon Force = awful 😄
Although early Helloween and Blind Guardian when they were sort of speed metal was pretty damn good also.
Finn jamming manowar was the absolute best way to start this spring forward Monday morning. 😂
My fave buttrock band is Seether. I am 150% biased because I am South African, where they're from. Loved them when they were called Saron Gas, love them still!
I think about The Gift often. Amazing song.
Honestly great pick, my choice would be Breaking Benjamin but Seether as a close second
i refer to butt rock as a totally different genre lol. im not saying anybody is wrong first of all. since the early 90's i would refer to bands like poison and def lepperd as 'butt rock' referring to their pants and falsetto vocals. just sharing my take. great video as usual.
Def Leppard is certainly butt rock now. Maybe the buttest of them all.
Watch a Las Vegas Hysteria performance.
"Butt rock" in my lifetime always meant radio bands who produce ASS tier music for Midwest alt-country people who like rock.
@@user-fj6kk1vo8nthat’s fair enough, I always refer to that shit as ‘radio rock’
@@jay_vero I refer to it as "radio".
My favourite thing about Manowar is that they put out their debut album in 1982, about a year before Kill Em All and Show No Mercy would make them sound completely irrelevant - and then they just sort of went on to have a 40+ year career anyway based off the fact that no-one could tell if they were serious or not.
Which they were.
Accurate
Manowar rules!!! 🤘🏻💀🤘🏻
Battle Hymn is an absolute banger through.
I love power metal, but your take is absolutely correct
NOOO!!! WE CAN'T LET NICK KNOW THE TRUTH!!!
I shunned indie rock as soon as I knew it existed, but one day, I had a crush on this girl that was really into Death Cab. So naturally I fired up Kazaa and downloaded some Death Cab songs and wound up really friggin liking them, which I didn't expect to happen. Me knowing some Death Cab songs did nothing to impress her, but at least I discovered a band I really like as a result.
Silver linings
This is why I always ask new people I meet for bands they're into. Even if the friendship doesn't last, sometimes the music does. It's wild how much this expanded my musical taste and knowledge.
Mr. Bungle is the best thrash band
It’s Trudeau
despised icon played like 5 times louder than any other deathcore band I've ever seen. has anyone felt similar?
Really enjoyed this series. Would love to see a video on bands you now like that you hated/didn't like when you were younger. As someone around your age, I have a good handful of those and think it would make a good video
I love power Metal because I’m European
Goth rock will probably be in the last video 😢😢😢😢
Hoping so. But this guy has it umbrelled wrong. He had it under metal.
Goth rock and darkwave origins are from punk, post-punk. Its more moodier, slower, artsy, punky, dance oriented, musically minimal. minor tonality, somber vocals, etc.
Gothic metal was born out of metal. More aggressive, complex music arraingements, faster, screamy vocals, guitar shredding, etc
Different.
Best buttrock band is Breaking Benjamin, it's impossible for me to pick anything else.
lol 😂 not even
Hell no. Nickleback , shine down , creed ,
@@mathewyerry2072 Nickelback & Creed are certainly contenders, & I respect those picks. But Shinedown is D tier by even buttrock standards
@@Luissv72 although they have prob sold far more records then both those bands
Butt rock has to be Shinedown. Just look at the billboard numbers and sales.
You wanna know impressive? Dexter from Offspring has a PHD in Biology. Guys a genius.
"The Power", "Black Wind, Fire and Steel" and "Defender" fucking slaps yo 👊😍
"Return of the Warlord" is one hell of a banger and the lyrics are hilarious!
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 Ooohh, I'll check it out and get back to you! 😁
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119Thank you for that! 😂😂😂 Holy hell
@@ponya3.66 I hope you catched the video version lol
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119There's a video too??
I think I'd do Blind Guardian for Power Metal - though I think Helloween, Stratovarius, and my personal fav Symphony-X I think have strong arguments (though I guess Symphony-X are more on the progressive end)
Blind Guardian stand out for their vocals. Not as high-pitched as most bands in the genre.
“Power metal can retroactively turn you into a virgin” nearly caused me to fall down the stairs I was laughing so hard 😅
The words 'fur thong' will live rent free in my head forever now. Thanks Finn 😅
Hey my lovely Finn ... I saw that one Video and I have to say he missjudges you and there is nothing wrong abaout grinding if your content is informativ. I love Musiclore and you are one of the best to convey it to some stupid Dude like me .... Love you Finn and pls keep grinding .... I need content after work to relaxe
☺️
Man o War ,.boots.with the furrr.
Thrash is great, but crossover thrash is really where the action’s at
Suicidal Tendencies number 1 crossover band IMO
finn you should do a tier list of all the artists who have covered the star spangled banner in the super bowl. or just in general lol
Finn, what's your opinion on the late 90s early 00s beatdown bands. You like stuff like shattered realm, no retreaz, one second thought, denied, bcs and so on?
Yes, love it
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA yeah me too
Aside from Nickelback, kings of Butt-rock and which is on every wine-mom's play list. I also think that if Butt-rock was summarized into one song it was, Last resort by Papa Roach. That chorus line is burned into my brain cuz I hated it so much.
Dang I realized Finn is the musical Tim pool
Huh?
Pls pls Finn make a whole video about the 80s glam/hair metal, the whole world made a mistake when they only focused on america but glam never died outside of america it continued on and evolved to sth great with bands like, Reckless love, crazy lixx and crashdiet to name a few great ones, I would luv to hear yr thoughts on the whole genre and what came of it finn
Yep i did a couple years ago!
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA I watched it and loved yr view on it, Thank you. I also loved the footages from western decline of civilization, But Finn the world needs yr video on glam after grunge outside of america.
Another awesome video.
*" G E N R A "*
I do lyrics and I don't go to UA-cam's library and in the end some lyrics get blocked. I don't get this thing with copyright claims. Can someone explain it to me.
man i cant believe danframpt0n made that video trashing you!!!!! will finn fight back
How dare he. The only person allowed to make fun of Finn is us.
To me, bands and artists like Manowar and Yngwie Malmseen are in that transitionary period between 80s metal and power metal, but I'd definitely call them power metal by modern standards. Even Rainbow gets a little Power Metal-y sometimes in shit like Gates of Babylon.
As a massive Power Metal fan - I love the redemption arc in this video. Finn plummeted to the lowest of all lows with his dissing of Power Metal - but then at the last moment redemption was achieved by hailing the almighty MANOWAR!
RESPECT!
Brothers everywhere
Raise your hands into the air
We're warriors, warriors of the world
Like thunder from the sky
Sworn to fight and die
We're warriors, warriors of the world
The problem with thrash metal is the best bands WEREN'T in the "big four": Exodus (who would be as revered as Metallica if Combat Records hadn't sat on their first album for almost a year before releasing), Kreator, Forced Entry, the Accused, Master, Voivod, Anacrusis, Destruction, Coroner, Sacred Reich, Blood Feast, Wehrmact, shit even Atrophy is better than most Metallica. And as for Slayer, I think Dark Angel is a better representative of that style than Slayer was (no offense to Slayer who I do like).
Power metal drip is legend
I thought Poison was The King of Butt Rock along with Whitesnake, Kixx, Cinderella, Warrant, Jackal, White Lion, Great White, Motley Crew, etc. Nickel Back and Creed reminded me more Frat Rock. Okay Finn, you get technical often and that's cool, it helps clarify genres of music that can be blurred from one to the next, and I appreciate it. Death Cab For Cutie I believe were on a "Major Label" so if you are a band(Metal, Pop, Punk, Rock, etc.)and not on a "Major Label" you're an Indie Band regardless. Somewhere in the late 90's/early 2000's the term Indie Bands as a term for bands on Independent labels such as Saddle Creek, SST, Touch and Go, Alternative Tentacles, Grass Records, Goldenrod, Merge, Victory, Alias, Sub Pop, etc. got blurred and our Orwellian Media turned "Indie Rock" into a music genre. I don't know about you but bands on Merge, Victory, and Sub Pop sound almost nothing alike yet they are all on Indie Labels.
You and I may have grown up in a different time, I'm 48 and when I was 18-22 I was fortunate enough to have 2 great Indie Record Stores Drastic Plastics and The Antiquarium and Dave Sink of The Antiquarium would talk to us about music and play all these great bands on Independent Labels, turning us onto music we'd probably have never heard. It is how I got turned onto Indie bands like Brainiac, Slint, Tanner, No Knife, Drive Like Jehu, Chavez, Polvo, etc. I was fortunate to have had that chance to get turned onto such a diverse variety of sounding Indie Bands, and not everyone has had or will have that experience, so who am I to point a finger?
As for The Pixies they are great to me but one person's treasure is another person's trash.
The bands you thought were butt rock are actually glam metal. A few examples of butt rock bands: Nickelback, Creed, Stone Sour, Breaking Benjamin, Seether, Five Finger Death Punch.
@@dominikaksiazek7177Well during the 80's when I was like 11-15 we called them Butt Rock/Glam Rock I guess the definition has been changed. Every band you mentioned to me was called Frat Rock back in the day. Either way it is what it is.
That Man O War song sounded like a Tonka Toys commercial...or really any toy commercial in the 80s and early 90s, lol.
Love the Pixies, Bad Brains, and… Finn McKenty 😊
IIRC, Collective Soul was the most played radio band of the 90s.
Super underrated. 4 Platinum albums. Still making great music. And a hell of a show as well.
Suicide silence used to open for megadeth. That was a sick set.
Probably was a great show. Although I love both I don’t know if there fan bases would really crossover that much.
How can anyone not love Eric Adams' vocals? Dude can't hit the Halford falsetto, so he just said, "Fuck it! I'm gonna banshee shriek as loud as I can with lots of vibrato!"
For volume four please discuss my favorite sub-genre, Melodic Death Metal. In Flames, At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, and many others. Whats not to like.
Wasn't Taproot a hardcore band back in the day?
Best power metal band is Helloween imo
My favorites from each here:
Deathcore: Whitechapel
Nu Metal: System of a Down
"Butt Rock" (really hate the term): Breaking Benjamin
Thrash Metal: Megadeth
Indie Rock: Tigers Jaw
Alternative Rock: Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rap Rock: Rage Against the Machine (I consider them more funk metal than just merely rap rock)
Power Metal: it's either gonna be Firewind or 3 Inches of Blood
SOAD isn't Nu Metal, though.
Despised Icon was the only deathcore band I liked. They were the most hardcore influenced IMO. I saw them around 06-07 with A Life Once Lost and Job for a Cowboy and left after them before JFAC.
Finn, I recently watched your video about straight edge from 4 years ago. I noticed that you spoke much faster back then. Was this deliberate or you just sped up the videos?
A lot of people complained so i started speaking slower and with less energy and emotion- people like that better. Basically the less of myself i put into videos, the better
@@FinnMckentyPRMBAlmao😂😂
Flotsam & Jetsam is a great thrash metal band (also they are from Arizona my home state) and I agree Death Cab For Cutie is amazing
I think that One hot Min by ricp is underrated.
What did I told you, I ve always loved Manowar
Where is the chart in the intro from?
I demand CESSATION from the power metal subgenre!
Absolutely hilarious episode!
The best power metal isn't purely power metal, but usually also add something, such as symphonic metal or progressive, and some will show some minor thrash influences. Nothing wrong with a little metal for your D&D party.
you should do hair metal in the next one with poison, Bon Jovi, or Motley Crue being the best ofc
I have a 1206 Ng/dL test level and you still make me cry Finn….validate me by liking the same things!
Maybe you need an AI bro
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA but Finn correcting my hormonal imbalances is not as easy as you just validating my opinions by having the exact same opinions
fun fact: Alex Lopez of Suicide Silence, who got a shout out in this video, is currently drumming for nu-metal icons POD!
A curious fact is that Morello, before being the guitarist we all know, was secretary to the senator for California. He was removed from that position for calling a lady a racist who complained that a Mexican family had moved into the neighborhood.
I disagree with you on about everything musically (I am a nerd after all). But you do these videos in such a fun style that I have to keep watching them. Congrats!
I still remember when people found out Tom Morello went to Harvard. James Young the guitarist from Styx has a degree in aerospace engineering. Now that's impressive because that is what rocket science actually is aerospace engineering, no such actual discipline has racket science.
Anthony Kiedis is unironically my favorite lyricist ever. Because he either writes the most bizarre, awful, shit I've heard or he writes some of the most beautiful, heartfelt words using incredible metaphors and poetry. His technical ability is up for debate ( I reckon it's eh) but I'd say like his band mates he definitely has his craft when it comes to song writing.
When you listen to Razor, Sepultura, Sadus, all the german bands, and pretty much all the non big-4 thrash bands, yo can clearly hear the influence of Slayer had on them, the speed and the agressiveness is very similar. The other big 3 are more melodic, "bluesy".
Job for a Cowboy was up there with Suicide Silence wernt they ? Or am I Mis-Genre-Izing them ?
Doom EP is definitely Deathcore. Their other stuff is arguably Tech Death but I don't think you're misgenreing them
Power metal makes me feel like I am flying into battle on a dragon fighting the Immortal Lord Zargothrax for the Kingdom of Fife
can anybody send me link to this chart?
Thanks!
Pedantically discussing those details... perfect record title
I could listen to you talk about buttrock all day!
I hear you regarding power metal but Blind Guardian is so good and underrated in my opinion, especially their guitar work.
W Death Cab, “Styrofoam Plates” lyrics are more metal than Suicide Silence 🖤
I love how your pick for alt rock was the RHCP when you shit talked Anthony's vocals and like 90% of their albums lol. Why pick them if you don't even like them?
Greg Graffinhas a PhD, he is a university teacher and the lead singer of one of the most important skate punk bands. That's impressive!
All I've ever really wanted in life is to ride into battle on a griffin.
Weird coincidence, after watching this video an ad for the California Mid-State Fair came on. Can you guess which band is playing a show over there? Nickelback.
I would say Muse is my favorite indie rock band. Their talent and song writing is amazing. As far as like thrash metal goes I really like Slayer a lot, but I am go with Havok. My favorite like Alternative band is Incubus I just dig like every one of their albums. I can practically listen to them all day. My favorite butt rock band is Creed all the way, I would say Blind Guardian is bad as. As far as deathcore goes have to go with Despised Icon.
I like me some power metal and don't take the genre too seriously but Manowar is too cringe for me
Manowar is BARELY power metal so its fine.
@@swoz_ Ironically Manowar is American style power metal.
Compare the physiques of the maniwar chads vs virgin indi rockers
on this day the 11th day of the 3rd month of 2024 311 day we must acknowledge the s tier snare of chad sexton.
Chad Sexton must be protected at all costs, dude is one of the most underrated drummers ever!
@springer90 absolutely. the whole band is legitimately S tier musicians. nick hexum has some solo album that is pop basically and it sounds like it should be on the radio
I frickin love Suicide Silence
Finn needs to do a specific Black Metal & power Metal tier list of his worst & best bands in those genres.
If Muse counts as Indie then they’re my pick. Otherwise I’m with Finn I don’t care about Indie lol. But Muse is absolutely incredible.
I’d say Linkin Park for Nu Metal, but for me the only two choices for Nu Metal are them and Korn.
Butt rock is like post grunge, play too much on rock stations. Country music vocals with hard rock = post grunge/butt rock lol. Nickleback, Staind, Three days grace, Creed, Crossfade, Hinder, 5 finger death punch, puddle of mudd
It’s pre grunge what are you deaf? Leppard?
Post grunge
I got into Blind Guardian for a little bit and my virginity came back. I listened to some Nickleback and it went away again.
'boots with the fur' LMAO
Suicide silence is easily one of my favorites. RIP Mitch 😢
Hell yeah brother
It always triggers me to hear Butt Rock. I have to remember that not everybody likes them some Alternative/Post-Grunge from 1997-2014.
I like SS but for me, the crown of deathcore belongs to Job For a Cowboy, even though they're more of a tech death metal band nowadays. They both debuted in the same year but SS became more popular. Still, JFAC wins it for me. 😁
Sodom is my fav thrash metal band I think, but fair and must be choice with slayer
Power Metal is only fun to listen to while I plat World of Warcraft 3 when my wife is sleeping.
How do you choose Korn for their influence and RHCP for their success...and then not choose Metallica?
here in Brazil, we call Power Metal "Metal espadinha", something like "Swordy Metal", just to irritate the fans hahahah
