Find out by watching the definitive guide to one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2022 - the third general release single malt from the Kanosuke Distillery, released on 24 June 2022.

    I was very lucky to try this with my Japanese family friend (he said he had to win one in an online ballot to purchase) and it was supremely good! Having had a few drams and feeling like I would never own a bottle, one sole bottle, all alone, was staring at me in a Haneda airport duty free shop, I picked up the bottle and quickly went to purchase it for about 12000 yen. I think its the best Japanese whiskey I've ever drunk and purchased. (I love sherry cask!) Very pleased and shocked when I checked locally that they're trying to sell one for $600!

      Good pick at Haneda - you even managed to avoid the 10% consumption tax!

The single grain was a bit more “bourbony” than I usually go for but man oh man, it was nice and I’d like a double.

      Value is in the eye of the beholder. I know people who have paid pricing along those lines in the US or the UK or Hong Kong and they have really enjoyed it because they love the taste, and see value in owning this bottle from this particular distillery. In my videos I always judge things relative to the Japanese recommended retail price, allowing viewers to decide whether any premium to that is within their budget.

    In my experience, whenever the distillery talks about Re-Charred casks, even American Oak, this process of Shaving back, preparing the cask for charring by either steaming or/and toasting and only then re-charring, often is completed by a process of seasoning is Sherry.
    Lagavulin for instance, uses what they describe as Re-Charred American Oak casks, but neglect to tell you (unless you ask) that these casks are then seasoned with fresh sherry in Scotland. Kanosuke could be doing the same thing. After all, a genuine Spanish Sherry cask casks 5 times that of a standard American Oak Barrell.
    Strangely enough, despite seasoning in Sherry, these casks are still termed Ex-Bourbon casks or Re-Charred American Oak casks, despite the fact that or all intents and purposes, these are FRESH FIRST-FILL Sherry casks!
    Therefore, it could well be that this expression is not 100% Ex-Sherry cask matured but is 100% Sherry influenced.

    • @KanpaiPlanet
      @KanpaiPlanet  2 роки тому +5

      This is absolutely not the case here. Neither Kanosuke nor Ariake Sangyo are seasoning their recharred ex-shochu casks.
