Hey Cheyenne! I did ceramics for 2 years in college and after the first fall semester, I was able to (not perfectly) center my clay, but still able to pull my walls up and improve with my later projects. A couple things: 1. Centering is very important; if you continue to practice everything else will become easier. I would recommend creating a couple of clay balls (around 5), and practice throwing for a session. 2. Do not have a lot of water in your projects while you're forming the shape. It gets in the way and too much water can ruin the inside of your cups, vessels, bowls, plates, etc. Having that much water will make the clay too soft, slippery, and hard to work with. Squeeze out the water from your sponge and take out any extra water that sits in your projects. 3. Speed. Make sure your highest speed is when you are centering and slowly decrease it in every step you do and make sure it is a manageable speed when you're pulling your walls. If you have the same speed throughout your promises you'll feel overwhelmed and your projects will come out wonky. When throwing and centering feel the speed when you're practicing and I'm sure you'll find your rhythm from there. 4. Tools can help you straighten up your walls depending on the shape you want. I used one that was from a website called MudTools, which was my professor's favorite shop to buy materials from. it was a thin rubber half circle and with the straight edge, I would fix my walls so they look nice and clean. There was also a thin metal half-circle that you can get in most ceramic kits. There's one with a serrated edge and the other with a clean edge. Also, household items you don't use anymore or often (mainly for designs or trimming). I hope these tips help with your next session. Can't wait to see what else you create! 💖

to be entirely honest, I was on and off with masking in public for a while, but I'm back to being fully masked anytime I enter a public space!! The summer has been so so gnarly for Covid numbers, though I did see that the FDA is in the process of approving another vaccine, so I'll be sure to get that soon as it's available :D I deffo wanna make more textile vlogs!! I have some lingering crochet wips that might make for a fun video~~
Absolutely agree that it means so much to Cheyenne masking in public. I'm chronically ill and live with a disability and public spaces (including hospitals, go figure) are no longer safe & accessible because so few people are masking. Hello! I am a ceramic artist too! honestly, theres not much with pottery that can be rushed without sacrificing quality. Efficiency comes with time and LOTS of practice. While it won't make an individual piece go faster, I find with the nature of the long, cyclical process that is pottery, batch work is the most helpful. Doesn't have to be all the same thing, but the same step in the process for more than one piece at a time saves SOOO much time. You only have to set up and clean up once, you get to really get into that part of the process bc your brain isn't switching tasks so much. That has been the biggest ADHD/ASD help for me with it too. Feel free to reach out with any questions or tips too! Big fan, you're one of the biggest inspirations and sources of confidence for me to leave chemistry behind and pursue this as a career instead, it truly feeds my soul
My concentration when I was getting my bachelors in teaching, was ceramics. I haven't been in a legit ceramics studio since college, so watching your video was such a beautiful trip down memory lane :). I have a tip for getting more height in your walls though! In college we were encouraged to have 3-5 same weight clay clumps at the ready with the intention they would get smushed after being thrown. This is important, you must smush them. Throw them one after the other and just work on getting the walls as tall as you can. The first one, see how tall you can get it before it tears. The second one, see how tall you can get it without tearing. Then the third, just focus on the walls getting within about an inch of the second one. Each one just focus on wall height/thickness, and nothing else. Again, expect to destroy them. When you set up the expectation to destroy them, it takes the pressure off, but it gives some of the most valuable experience. It's like forcing yourself to fail kinda. But I bet after that, you will consistently get much taller walls. Tall walls are hard to do when the clay is not centered, so just keep practicing! That is for real the skill that took me the longest to master, was just getting the damn thing centered.

Like to the point of I'm listening to Pandora or Spotify and I'm like OH! This song would be perfect for this character!" Hi Chey! I love seeing one of my fav artsy creators getting into ceramics-it's so fun!! I'm also fairly new to ceramics, but I've gathered a few tips for fellow intricate design lovers that don't want their process to take 5 years lol. Some I've tried, some not, so take with a grain of salt: 1) Use a slip trail bottle, ruling pen, or airpen - load with an underglaze and water ratio and draw like normal. Because it comes out thicker you only have to draw it once! 2) Sgraffito - cover leather hard vessel in underglaze/underglaze combo of choice and then carve out the design you want. So you can either make a white design on colored background, or make the design colored and carve away the rest of the underglaze everywhere you want white. 3) Wax resist - there's lots of cool ways to use a resist for layering and underglazing, and one that you might like is to cover the vessel in wax resist, then carve out/draw with a needle tool your design. Then you can fill in the lines you carved with whatever underglaze you please and wipe away the excess. Faster than tracing 3 times and the wax burns off in bisque so you can clear glaze with no problemo There's lots of amazing potters on instagram and other social media I'd recommend for inspo, and The Great Pottery Throwdown is also a very inspiring, cozy show if you haven't heard of it. Your ceramics studio looks soooo fun and more involved(?) than other studios I've seen from other UA-camrs. Your instructor seems so kind too. I wish we had ceramics studios where I live 😢 your accent is so good omg ❤

That's great you're learning how to throw! I got my bachelors in Ceramics, and now I teach. It took a bit of practice for most of us to confidently center the clay in the beginning. My best suggestion for easier centering is to use your core. I nestle my elbow into my upper inner thigh, and use the lower pad of my hand (below the fingers, more on the pinky side) to place up against the clay. I essentially let my leg/hip area do the centering for me. It's very helpful and less muscle strain, especially for long hours in the studio! You're doing great, keep going!
yes yes, this is great!! I usually am pretty good at centering, but the timed challenge got me in my head about it lolol. I do currently channel a lot of force through my forearm, so I'll try locking it into my body a bit more and pressing through my core instead. Thank you so much!
Hiii! I did ceramics this past month!! Here are some tips hehe that I learned from my 2 month class! I wouldn’t use too much water! Just cause too much water may cause the clan to stretch out too much. Or the particles in the clay to come out more. Also I would probably slow down the speed of your wheel a bit more! Especially when pulling walls. I think it will help with having a bit more steady hands when pulling up! I also struggled with that though haha. Making cylinders is hard. Finally just enjoy the process! Ceramics is definitely one of those art forms that just takes times! Don’t feel like you should be faster or rushed. Truly each step takes time and I think that’s what makes ceramics fun! Makes you enjoyed the final product more knowing how much thought and love you put into each step! Good luck and I hope you have fun with ceramics!!
chey!!! when i first took a ceramics class i basically moved into the studio i loved it so much but i basically went into the studio at 8 am and left at 9pm every day so i think just making ten million things it gets better

yes yes!! When I did ceramics it did and I’ll be honest took me forever to finish I won’t lie about that, but after a while it started to click, you kind of gain your own routine after a while. What worked for me was I would throw a couple while working and then while those dried a bit for trimming I would start on another small batch at least a manageable one and then from there I would have some fired and some I could still work on, and kind of maintain a momentum of that. Glazing was my favorite part so that I took the most time with but, I for some reason always had many projects going on at once and it was good for my brain in a way that I could do either or at the time or really what I was feeling that day. I don’t know if that even helped or makes sense 😭😭 but that was my routine in ceramics but then again I worked very small and with a lot of hand building when I wasn’t on the wheel throwing Also wanted to say that I love the wares you have made so far and how you are glazing them it’s literally chefs kiss!!!
I love pottery so much! I’ve taken a class or two here and there but it’s a hobby that’s not in my budget right now. I’m hoping in the future it will be but for now I’m happily living vicariously through your pottery videos!

also related to the cats deciding they don't like their food anymore, we've found that adding some variety helps. if soph could handle mixing in the occasional other food just to give their brains some different kind of stimulation helped loads with our babies when they decided to riot lol x
I wish I could do ceramics but it’s very gatekept in my region :( lessons are insanely expensive, let alone just using the studio… I find it so sad. But! I live vicariously through you Cheyenne! Your ceramics are downright darling 💖🌷
Also in terms of ceramics; it does take forever. Batch throwing helps but I know that's hard when you share a studio and can't monitor the dryness every other day. One of my instructors was pretty strict about cylinders and while it was annoying it was sooo useful. She would have us line up like 5-6 balls of clay ( that's what fit in our space but however many you can) all abouttt the same size and would just have us try and make the tallest, straightest, evenest cylinders we could. ...And then we couldn't move on till we had reached a certain standard but obviously in your own practice that's not necessary. Just throwing with the knowledge that this is Just practice and doesn't have to be a beloved cup or something at the end took a lot of pressure off, so I was able to pull taller and thinner walls and really see how far I could go before it broke.
My special interest is Supernatural. There's so many lines, episodes and seasons on repeat in my head. I have Dean's music playlist consistently playing on in my head. I also think about Sam and Dean, alot. So yeah we love special interests. Same with regular show. The "ooooohs!" are on repeat.
I'm so jealous about access to a public studio! Pickin's are slim where I live, and there's only one place that has a studio but it's members only and there are classes they make you take before you're a member and I'm sitting here like, "I just want to see if this is a hobby I want to do, I can't commit to a membership!" 😩 But I may just cave because I took a ceramics class at an art museum and I have "clay fever!"
I do actually have a membership, which I got after the first time I took a 6 week class there last fall...but it's nice cause during the 6 week class, you get to come into the studio whenever you want!! And so I basically just extended that with the membership lolol. I'd say go for the class! And see if it's really something you want to commit to!!
Something that will make your pieces more stable while throwing would be to use less water...instead of using water to make it easier to move your fingers through a piece, try using the slip or slurry you create from throwing instead of continuing to add water. Over time the excess water will make the clay less stable! Happy throwing!

When I did ceramics it did and I’ll be honest took me forever to finish I won’t lie about that, but after a while it started to click, you kind of gain your own routine after a while. What worked for me was I would throw a couple while working and then while those dried a bit for trimming I would start on another small batch at least a manageable one and then from there I would have some fired and some I could still work on, and kind of maintain a momentum of that. Glazing was my favorite part so that I took the most time with but, I for some reason always had many projects going on at once and it was good for my brain in a way that I could do either or at the time or really what I was feeling that day.
I don’t know if that even helped or makes sense 😭😭 but that was my routine in ceramics but then again I worked very small and with a lot of hand building when I wasn’t on the wheel throwing
Also wanted to say that I love the wares you have made so far and how you are glazing them it’s literally chefs kiss!!!
I love pottery so much! I’ve taken a class or two here and there but it’s a hobby that’s not in my budget right now. I’m hoping in the future it will be but for now I’m happily living vicariously through your pottery videos!

also related to the cats deciding they don't like their food anymore, we've found that adding some variety helps. if soph could handle mixing in the occasional other food just to give their brains some different kind of stimulation helped loads with our babies when they decided to riot lol x

I wish I could do ceramics but it’s very gatekept in my region :( lessons are insanely expensive, let alone just using the studio… I find it so sad. But! I live vicariously through you Cheyenne! Your ceramics are downright darling 💖🌷
Hi Cheyenne - I think your wheel is also going too fast when you're trying to pull walls. Slow the wheel down a little bit and it gets easier!

Also in terms of ceramics; it does take forever. Batch throwing helps but I know that's hard when you share a studio and can't monitor the dryness every other day. One of my instructors was pretty strict about cylinders and while it was annoying it was sooo useful. She would have us line up like 5-6 balls of clay ( that's what fit in our space but however many you can) all abouttt the same size and would just have us try and make the tallest, straightest, evenest cylinders we could. ...And then we couldn't move on till we had reached a certain standard but obviously in your own practice that's not necessary. Just throwing with the knowledge that this is Just practice and doesn't have to be a beloved cup or something at the end took a lot of pressure off, so I was able to pull taller and thinner walls and really see how far I could go before it broke.

I'm so jealous about access to a public studio! Pickin's are slim where I live, and there's only one place that has a studio but it's members only and there are classes they make you take before you're a member and I'm sitting here like, "I just want to see if this is a hobby I want to do, I can't commit to a membership!" 😩 But I may just cave because I took a ceramics class at an art museum and I have "clay fever!"
I do actually have a membership, which I got after the first time I took a 6 week class there last fall...but it's nice cause during the 6 week class, you get to come into the studio whenever you want!! And so I basically just extended that with the membership lolol. I'd say go for the class! And see if it's really something you want to commit to!!

Something that will make your pieces more stable while throwing would be to use less water...instead of using water to make it easier to move your fingers through a piece, try using the slip or slurry you create from throwing instead of continuing to add water. Over time the excess water will make the clay less stable! Happy throwing!
